(And she is still drawing pictures and writing out what happened: "Hetsyoooooooo win't the tragin. I love it") Hey - she is just beginning to read and write!So this was a big hit at our house! Although a Dragon, Hokey Poke was accepted into the little community of Dwarves who discovered him as just an egg...he was never judged or belittled because he was different. Plus even when this "difference" could have destroyed the town, Hokey Poke was never separated or excluded, but the town banded together to make him "well" and therefore to save the town and keep Hokey Poke a part.Hokey Poke never saw his differences as a liability...I think there were many wonderful teaching opportunities in this fun read, with its beautiful illustrations..also the major lessons of staying healthy:) .I fully recommend:)

I got this book for free to read to my 3 year old. I did not know the author, but it sounded like something that would appeal to us both. This is a good book, this is the best use of rhyme and it's easy to read and follow. The graphics are also great. In this magical creature community, a dwarf finds a large egg and a dragon come from inside. They befriend the dragon and he becomes a good friend, but one day he plays in the rain and gets sick and when his temperature rises he sneezes FIRE. Hence, the title "Please Don't Sneeze"! They get him well and he apologizes to his friends for any damage he caused while ill and from then on remembers to wear his boots, scarf and hat to avoid getting sick again.

I bought this book thinking it was a book about sneezes. Turns out it is much more than that. It's about taking responsibility of one's health and ensuring that when you are sick you take care not to make everyone else around you sick as well. Normally we speak of not sharing viruses but to a child this is pretty strange so they use the imagination of a dragon and, when he is ill and sneezes, flames come out. Nifty way to make their point in a way that children can comprehend and well worth the purchase.

I love being able to read stories to the kids that have a moral to them. This one has a moral that can apply to any child, and even some adults sometimes. Having a faraway forest with whimsical creatures is the types of books all of my children have been interested in, especially my youngest daughter. This is one book that I don't get away with only reading a page or two, she wants the whole thing everyday.

It took me less than two hours to read through the chapters and learn all the letters. I did all the exercises, too. I happen to have studied several languages, so it wasn't rocket science for me. But it was still more difficult than I expected. That said, I then went to Google Translate to find a translation for a word and discovered that you can use the site to learn the language. Not only do you get the Greek words for whatever words and expressions you want, but there is a voice that speaks it all so you can hear the pronunciation. You won't really need another language book. So, I'm really happy that I got this book, and I'm going to learn to speak it as well as being able to read it. I gave it a four star only because not only would I have set up the exercises differently, I would have used different English letters to represent some of the sounds. But it does a great job, and you do want to start with this book.

I don't use this book to make long sentences but only use it for a word or two; the people that I try to speak Greek to are Greek and find it funny that it takes me so long in finding the right words...I'm leaning the alphabet.

For people like me with little or no knowledge of Greek pronunciation, this little gem of a Kindle book is a great introduction. The Romanized pronunciation guides and the very short descriptions of Greek letters and digraphs are very intuitive for a native speaker of English.

This book provides a good start to learn the basics of Greek - useful before a trip to Greece or before deciding to learn Greek in earnest.

You indeed can read in Greek in few days using this book. Has other extras like basic numbers, name of the days, months, time related words, colors etc.

Short and to the point. Helps clarify many questions on how to pronounce Modern Greek words.

About the Author

Jean de Joinville was a thirteenth-century medieval French chronicler. His most famous work is Life of St. Louis, a biography of Louis IX of France that chronicled the Seventh Crusade.Geoffrey de Villehardouin was a soldier and historian who took part in, and wrote extensively on, the Fourth Crusade. His eyewitness account of the 1204 conquest of Constantinople is the earliest surviving French historical narrative.Caroline Smith studied history at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, from where she graduated with a PhD in 2004. Her publications include Crusading in the Age of Joinville (2006). She lives and works in New York, where she continues to pursue her research on the crusades and thirteenth-century French society, and on the life and writings of John of Joinville.

A favorite of mine, especially the second of this two-book compilation - the Vita St. Louis. Joinvilles vivid first hand account of the seventh crusade makes for a real page turner.

This is a wonderful, action packed true story of the medieval French, organizing farmers and lordlings to fight the Muslims to try to win back the Holy Land for the Christians.

This is an excellent read about the 4th Crusade, it is well worth reading for anyone interested in this part of our history. I learned things I had really never thought about, and I'm a young 80 years old. I Purchased this through my Kindle which I am seldom without.

Outstanding and very interesting read.

Unlike so many histories,this book tells us what were the impressions,views,and experiences of those who were actually there. The best history of the crusaders' experiences I have read. The author's notes helped give those narratives context.

I highly recommend this translation of Joinville and Villehardouin.The translator has taken care to translate these works into lucid, contemporary language without dumbing down the writing. Her work has paid off, providing a readable and lively edition still suitable for scholarly review.Whether you are reading these for enjoyment, personal interest, or academic reasons, this translation is a good one.

Very enjoyable and fairly easy read on this tragic portion of history. You would think the Crusades would serve as the ultimate example as to why we shouldn't send our youth and in the Crusades context, the Flower of Society to fight a largely political foreign war (masked with religion of course) that gains nothing.But then, we don't learn from history do we?

Needed for school. And it got the job done.

Kindergarten-Grade 2—A competent translation and soft, minimalist paintings recount this oft-told tale. Many of the framed text pages carry a small portrait of a figure featured in the larger facing scene. This story is built around dialogue among a donkey, cat, dog, and rooster and rises to a bit of action in the two scaring-the-robbers scenes. The illustrations keep the speakers in the foreground with almost no details in the colored backgrounds except for very small, wispy overhead vignettes echoing story elements. These small, almost indistinct figures are vague and dreamy, and the soft forms and gentle tone of the pictures never build the humor usually associated with the plucky "musicians" and the villains. Bell's spare text, faithful to the tale's traditional plot and oral heritage, lends itself easily to reading or telling aloud. Zwerger's subdued watercolors are as simple as the text, the images infused with a sophisticated naivete that lends them an air of gravitas even as they illustrate the story's slapstick episodes. Nearly all of the spreads have a similar layout: a full-page illustration on the recto and a text box on the verso, with the occasional spot art on the text page to enliven the clean, white space. The palette is primarily cool and crisp; almost every image, however, contains sparks of red and orange that help focus the eye. The "Town Musicians" of Bremen, was written originally in German by the brothers Grimm; and is here translated by Anthea Bell, with illustrations by Lisbeth Zwerger.... A story concerning a group of elderly animals who are no longer wanted (!) at their old residences; and consequently decide to leave for Bremen, and become musicians there. But that never actually occurs, as Providence intervenes, and something far more wonderful happens. Our fable does involve the concept of cruelty, but I suggest in a gentle and oblique fashion, as animals are spoken of, in an allegorical manner. Callosity, severity, and thoughtlessness are in fact something of human existence, and the psyche; and something our children will and must, unfortunately, face in their lives. This book is beautifully illustrated by Lisbeth Zwerger, and her depiction of the pathos of the parable, and the animals in particular, is excellent! Yet, I do agree with another reviewer here on Amazon, who pointed out that her drawings of architectural objects, and in particular the house, was not as fine as other illustrators. But true; nonetheless, ours is a chidrens' story, and on the more important issues, the animals, Ms. Zwerger scores very highly. I consequently recommend this beautiful rendition of the Brothers Grimm fable; it is a wonderful way to introduce our young to the reality of the world, morality and justice, and even Providence and Redemption! This parable, far from what some have criticized as being 'too cruel', and 'harsh', actually is quite moral, and elucidates very nicely the compassion, and understanding, we should all have amongst each other.

This is a Grimm's tale about a donkey, dog, cat and rooster who must all leave home. They are all older and have no use to their humans anymore. They meet up as they are running away and start traveling to Bremen. The illustrations are lovely, and it's a charming story. Highly recommended for adult or child.

This is another faithfully translated edition of the classic Bremen Town fairy tale. Lisbeth Zwerger, in her inimitable style, illustrates the old story using images from more contemporary scenes, with the abstract, dreamlike quality that characterizes much of her work. Anthea Bell's translation is vivid and clear, and the story moves itself along as the four animals set out on the road together seeking a new destiny, then happen upon a group of robbers in a forest house and devise a way to use the robbers' own fears against them. The story contains pathos, drama, humor, and a deeply moral ending as four faithful creatures, having been denied their place after lives of faithful service, find a way to take ill-gotten gains away from those who manifestly do not deserve them. It's been loved for over a century, for good reason, and this edition is a good choice to perpetuate it: as the closing line says: "The last man to tell this tale isn't dead yet." It's best suited for a preschool or elementary audience.

I am a huge fan of Lizbeth Zwerger, the illustrator of this traditional fairy tale. Technically, her work is extraordinary, but it is the magic she brings to every book she illustrates that lures me in every time. From The Wizard of Oz to Alice in Wonderland, Zwerger brings something new to even the most familiar children's stories. To me, her illustrations are works of art, but they are never cute and fuzzy. They may have more appeal for grown-ups or older children.
