The graphic novel (comic book) the same as the book of the same name, based on the video game series is something most third to fifth graders would really enjoy. Kids who don’t enjoy reading, There is a lot of reading involved. Story is pretty good if a bit repetitive in places. Comes with an extra comic book introducing Nate and Patrice. Good value.

OK, let's be honest. Plants versus zombies does not float my boat. But my seven-year-old grandson was over the moon about it. I must say I am glad to see The graphics were quite good and the game itself is not focused on killing other people. More imagination and fantasy centered than realistic.

My son is a PVZ nut... he likes these books so when I tell him to get off the XBox, he has something to do. Heaven forbid our children go outside.... *insert eye roll*

My young child loves reading these. I think they are pretty goofy but haven't noticed anything disturbing. Anything kid friendly that inspires my child to read is a winner in my house.

Getting my son to read was like pulling teeth... buying these comic books was the best thing ever- he LOVES them and wants to read all of them.. they make him laugh and he looks forward to more. It helps that he also has the games.

These are for my eight year old son. He loves them and they're on the accelerated reading list so he can count them at school. Gets him to read. Don't you want your kids to read for enjoyment more?

Bought this for my grandson, school messed up his scholar book order, so I ordered it on here. Was actually less expensive, and he loves this book series.

The book "Suicide Forest", deserves to be placed at the top of the best-sellers list for life! I gave this book definitely 5 stars hands down!! The characters are so very well developed and the plot will keep you riveted to your seat, clutching your reading device with white knuckles, it is so full of surprises and non-stop suspenseful action as well as the macabre horror. I will most assuredly declare with honesty the 2 tales told by author Jeremy Bates, delightfully made chills run up my spine! I really feel that this book could be the next big Hollywood Horror blockbuster! Clive Owen & Stephen King watch your backs, Jeremy Bates is coming up to take your places! I can't wait to read more, more more from this author!!The book "The Catacombs" are 5 sweet stars also!! This author weaves magic with his pen! You simply must, must read this author, trust my word that you will not be disappointed at all!! Great Stories that are both fiction and have truths to them.

With few reviews to begin with, I assumed they were from family members or those who owed Jeremy a favor, but still I believed at least one of them might be unbiased.Without a good grip on adventure, or even a slight idea of what creates a true sense of fear, the author dragged me through prose more fitting for a Mother Goose feather frenzy. When a comedian laughs at his own joke, it's a tip-off that less is coming. Jeremy reminded me of a third grader who comes home with a Knock-Knock joke and will not stop repeating it because it is SO funny to him. I find nothing funny about a man named Honda driving a Yamaha, but by the third repetition I could not get rid of the mental picture of Jeremy slapping himself on his knee and laughing at his own wit. I gave up ever expecting more than drivel and tossed the book before I tossed my cookies. HA HA HA HA Oh, that is so funny!

This consisted of two novels, similar story lines, but different stories. You can get this from the description. I usually avoid new eBooks as so many are poorly written, poorly edited, filled with typos, misspelled words, improper use of punctuation, etc. For some reason I took a chance on World's Scariest Places, Volume 1 and I am really glad I did. Jeremy Bates' book is great!Mostly written in the first person from the view of the main character with excursions into brief first person views of the other characters. These two stories are not an Indiana Jones roller-coaster ride, they move smoothly and steadily along creating great suspense and intense atmosphere. Not for someone who wants to dash through in an hour or less. This is the kind of books I love, they last for many hours and never get bogged down.Very creative scenarios, well crafted. Full of terror that slowly builds up to a high level and stays there until the end. The character development is wonderful - unique highly visual characters, you feel like they are right in front of you. The personality clashes, mood swings, and all the interplay between the individuals is true to life. No super heroes, just a group of people thrust into terror and life threatening events fighting to come out alive. There is some romance, conflict, and carefully written sexual scenes, but this is kept to a normal subdued level. The feeling I got reading these stories is very much like those I get reading Stephen King's older novels, like Salem's Lot, The Stand. I don't think I found a single typo or misspelled word. Jeremy Bates is one author I will be keeping my eye on and I am looking forward to more novels of this quality. Hard to put down. Glad I got World's Scariest Places, Volume 1.

I really enjoyed both of these novels in Volume I of The World's Scariest Places. Suicide Forest is about a group of friends/acquaintences who have the misfortune of exploring Suicide Forest rather than climbing Mt. Fuji as they had set out to do. The author did an amazing job of relating the creepiness of the forest so that the reader felt like they were actually there with the explorers. Also there was some real creativity by the author as to what was actually going on with some of the "suicides" in the forest. Same with The Catacombs. At one point I literally had to skim some pages because I felt like I was suffocating in the Catacombs. True Horror There! Read these if you like well-written descriptive horror that doesn't hold back (i.e. not everyone makes it out alive), & suspense that keeps you turning pages well into the night. I would not recommend reading Suicide Forest if you had a loved one that actually committed suicide because there is a lot of discussion about suicide in general as well as an unforeseen twist near the end that is unsettling. I got this as a free download on Amazon but would not hesitate to pay a reasonable amount. I have read some of Jeremy Bates before and like his brand of horror.

Natalia Strelkova has been bilingual in English and Russian since childhood. She received a degree from City University of New York (CUNY), traveled to Russia during the Krushchev "thaw" and stayed for 35 years, working as a translator and editor. I've read every book on Russian>English translation I've been able to get my hands on. Yes, I've been working to refashion myself as a professional translator since losing my job in academia. (Sadly, there is no work for those of us trained to teach Russian in today's America, making my doctorate essentially not worth much. Hence, the turn to translation work.) However, not to state the obvious, but despite multiple years in Moscow and said doctorate, I have found it to be much harder to "reproduce" into English Russian texts than to simply understand them. Of course, this is common knowledge to those who practice translation work, but the fact remains that it is very hard, particularly at the beginning, to move from the overly literal translation. Strelkova is a master instructor of the art, and her book is absolutely essential reading for those who wish to improve their abilities. She identifies several problematic aspects of Russian, such as what she calls "props"--certain verbs ''and nouns derived from verbs and many other problematic areas that can constrain the translator. Her suggestions for dealing with these issues are truly helpful and can only come from someone with years and years of translation practice under her belt. I am so very grateful for this book, which, on top of everything else, is easy on the pocketbook! She says in the afterword that she is creating an online course, and I hope this is true! I'll be one of the first to sign up for it!

I am a linguist by education and speak two languages with native fluency and Russian with reasonable fluency.I love this book for its modern sociolinguistic approach which emphasizes translation from Russian within the social and cultural context in which it is spoken.Translation is both an art and a science. In order to translate well, social and cultural differences have to be taken into account. Translation is not merely taking a group of words and rendering them into the target language, English in this case, but translating them into an appropriate cultural context that most closely renders the context in which the words were spoken in Russian.The author has a unique perspective and a unique background which gives her excellent qualifications and makes this book really interesting. If you are interested as an English speaker in translation from Russian to English or simply are an advanced student of Russian wanting to achieve a more advanced understanding of the language, I highly recommend this fascinating book.

I had hoped that this book would help me - a novice student, with Russian translation. But, much of this book is WAY over my head. Still, I am the consummate student; so, I am getting some benefit from this excellent work. And, the more I learn, the more help it will be; so, it is not a waste of money, IMHO.

This book is full of really useful tips and tricks that one can readily apply in situations where a good translation doesn't come immediately to mind. As mentioned in another comment though, the lack of an index is a drawback. The whole book could also have benefited from a good editor (there are some clunky, even incomplete, sentences presented as finished translations, vague examples, and formatting issues).

I think think this book is a great start for those looking into becoming translators. The author does a great job at explaining common mistakes and how to fix them. I highly recommend it!

The title "an introduction to" can be misleading: this book contains a variety of useful tips, even for the more experienced translator working from Russian into English. A must have, and possibly the best book of its kind for the native English translator working from Russian.

Get beyond the trap of literal translation. Strelkova's advice is excellent. It is seriously flawed, however, by the lack of an index.

"The killer app is other people." These are the words at the beginning of Charlie Fink's excellent book giving the big picture of augmented and virtual realities and where those technologies are heading. If you are a developer or other interested party and are curious about HoloLens, Oculus Rift, and similar technologes, this book by Charlie and his fellow contributors will help you get the lay of the land. You'll learn the terminolgy, the techniques, the history, and various viewpoints on where things are headed.I agree with Charlie's view on the killer app. It's about the people. Perhaps it's always been so. Certainly the past two decades in computing technology have been drivin by connecting with "other people". Prodigy, AOL, eMail, Usenet, and social networks like Facebook and Twitter, these are the exploding technologies and products driving us to buy and be glued to our smart phones and laptop screens as we build rich networks of friendships that wouldn't exist without the technology. If it is compelling to stand in a boarding line at an airport and see your children's photos scroll by on Facebook, then how much more it will mean to put on some glasses in your hotel room and be in the moment with your family back home.That said, some of what's in the book seems a little farfetched. I am not sure how close we are to being able to give and feel a virtual handshake with someone a thousand miles distant. Still, we need the dream. It's these dreams that press us forward and give focus to our efforts to expand what the technology is capable of.There's so much confusion over terminology due to vendors jockying for mindshare and marketshare. Is Mixed Reality a thing? What makes Mixed different from Augmented? Two of my favorite chapters in the book are the two by Stephanie Llamas and Charlie at the beginning that set straight the terminology and cut through the war of words and confusion from the vendors. I am old enough to have reached Grumpy Old Man status, and I think Charlie is too. You'll appreciate his forthrightness at the end of Chapter 2.Augmented realty holds a lot of promise. I'm fond of the industrial use cases that are quietly on the increase but aren't yet quite visible to the man on the street. There's a lot happening. It's important to keep up and have the big picture in mind. This book provides that picture, as well as some vision on where you'll want to be standing so that you'll be in the right place when the gold arrives.

The first thing you may notice about Charlie Fink’s Metaverse is that it truly is meta. Like Cosmo Kramer’s coffee table book about coffee tables that turns into a mini-coffee table, Metaverse is delivered along with the AR medium that it examines.This is to walk the walk, but also to infuse dynamism in an inherently static medium. In fact, Fink admits in the second page turn that the book is already out of date. This is why few people tackle such a fast-moving topic in book form, he says. So he’ll provide ongoing updates online.Another thing few people do is achieve meaningful depth on the topic of XR. As Fink rightly points out in the book’s introduction, the majority of XR-related ink is spilled over flowery depictions of world-changing technology with no real technological or cultural barriers worth mentioning.Deeper DiveSo Fink sets out in Metaverse to defy that trend with a multi-dimensional look at XR. Just as his AR avatar signals readers at the onset, Fink dives into XR’s drivers and beneficiaries: tech, society and business. These themes map to three points he explicates early in the book.1. Tech succeeds when it makes what we’re doing better, faster and cheaper.2. The killer app is other people.3. We always over-estimate the short term and under-estimate the long term.Zeroing in on the second point, people and society play a key role in the book. Fink in fact predicts that XR’s biggest killer apps will be social. This extrapolates his prolific view of tech history, such as what Love@AOL showed us as a precursor to social networking and Facebook.Drilling down further, social collaboration is currently missing from most mobile AR apps, but has the potential to drive immense value, a la network effect. But it first requires better multi-player support, as well as a robust AR cloud, as contributor Ori Inbar examines in one chapter.As for XR’s business dynamics, Fink again draws from a prolific career spent cross-training in various tech and media sub-sectors. He seeing giants “with huge margins for error” making big XR bets which will continue, including tech’s four horsemen and his former employer, Disney.Meanwhile, product strategies and business models are starting to materialize, as we examined in our latest report. Fink does justice by level-setting on monetization structures, as does contributor Stephanie Llammas in one chapter. But he admits there’s ample room for surprise and innovation.“The Internet, in my view, has four killer apps that make it indispensable,” Fink writes. “Email and messaging, e-commerce, search and social media. There are as yet no equivalent applications for VR and AR, though there are early signs of what those could be.”Timing is EverythingOther well-devised book components and level setting include early definitions of the XR alphabet soup. Fink boldly treads into contentious territory of defining industry terminology, through his own commentary as well as that of fellow thought leaders and industry-watchers like Llammas.As for overestimating the short term and underestimating the long term (point 3), this brings up a key theme within the book which is timing. The above draws from a Bill Gates quote while also bringing to mind another Bill: Bill Gross stresses that timing is everything in tech & business.Fink goes back even further for insights on opportune timing. Beyond tech revolutions, there are historical lessons in other things like gold rushes (the actual kind). There, Fink taps into Enlightenment-Age thinking. Quoting his quote from Voltaire:“To get rich, discover where gold will be discovered in the future and be there when it arrives.”This of course requires foresight and a lot of luck — another Bill Gross success factor. But the focus on timing has another hidden message. Because the magic lies in the “when” and “how,” it stands to reason that the question of “if” has an inevitable outcome. We’re with Fink on that.“As consumer computing shifted from laptops to smartphones, so will telecommunications switch from phones to headsets,” Fink writes in the book’s introduction,” but not as fast or in the way we would like them to.”

This is the first, best guide to VR & AR. In a confusing and crowded and fragmented space, Charlie Fink helps us all navigate our way through it all.This book has such rich information and helpful context for anyone in the industry, or anyone remotely interested in how novel applications of VR and AR could impact your life or business.I also love how he normalizes the irony of publishing anything in this space - as fast as it's moving - by posting a notice two pages in that says......well, I'll let you read it for yourself. :-)

A must-read for anyone who wants to learn about the future of AR, VR, and MR. As a pioneer in media and technology for 30 years, Charlie does a great job of explaining the importance and the responsibility of the industry to create a common language and consistently show consumers the differences in the technologies in a way that does not confuse them. I loved the use of AR in the book. My kids could not get enough. I recently heard my son explaining to a friend what XR means. Great job Charlie!

This is required reading for anyone interested in the XR market. It provides a foundational framework for understanding the technologies, applications and market segmentation. It also provides historical and present-day context for understanding how we got here and where we might be going. All this in an enjoyable, easy-to-read (and view) format.
