My grandson just turned 3 and is really loving having stories read to him as he learns to read himself. Can you ever go wrong with Dr. Suess?? I don't think so. Dr. Suess has a great way of "speaking" to imaginations. Highly recommend all.

I ordered a boxed set of 5 but it didn't include this one so I order it in addition. These books I used 38 yrs ago with my kids and gave them away. My daughter suppersmart was taught at 1 1/2 yrs old to recognize and name the letters of the alphabet. After reading the page I would trace the outline of the letter with her little finger. She like the rhythm of the words in these books by Dr. Suess.

I purchased this Dr. Seuss ABC book for my one year old granddaughter. She is just now really getting into listening to us read her books instead of trying to eat them. Her mother has been teaching her colors and shapes and has now moved onto her alphabet. She really enjoys the colors of the book. I didn't know that this version of the book had been changed from the original version. Since I only have this as a reference, I like it. I will probably purchase the paper copy now to compare but for now, this is a nice book for my granddaughter.

I love this book and so does my 4-year-old daughter. I really appreciate the fact that the book includes not just the capital letters. On every page, it mentions "big A, little a", "big B, little b", etc. Really important for a kid who is learning to read. On top of that: it's a Dr. Seuss book -- they're always terrific!

I had forgotten about the Dr Seuss alphabet book when I was looking for one as a gift. After looking at several others, I just knew I had to order Dr Seuss. I think it has just a little something extra than other alphabet books. And who can beat those whimsical illustrations?!

I ordered this book among many other Dr Seuss so I can read them to my daughter. This book is decent for a 30+ yr old like myself. I like the fact that "I can read it all by myself". Now if only she could...

I bought these books for a very dear friend's first child. Dr. Seuss is synonymous with quality children's books that are read time and time again. I plan to add to her collection. You can't go wrong with these books and kids love the vivid drawings and text.

When my son was little this was his favorite book. I read it to him so many times I memorized it. Then we read it to his sisters too. Now 25 years later I bought the book to share with my grandson.

This was our son's favorite book 27 years and I bought it for our grandson. We previously bought the board book, but the text had been changed so we bought this original text. Now our grandson loves it as well.

It feels so true.However, there’s a difference between something feeling true and something being true.In Adam Grant’s Give and Take, he identifies three types of people: givers, matchers, and takers. Givers are the selfless ones. Matchers are the quid pro quo group, and takers are the selfish ones. Conventional wisdom tells us takers get ahead, but in Grant’s research, givers rise to the top more frequently.As I read this book I was kind of in disbelief the whole time, but page after page, Grant hit me with more evidence. I definitely think of myself as a giver (though I know I’m not perfect, I’m sure I have regretfully done some matching and taking in my life) and if you look at my life right now I don’t think anyone would identify me as losing. Perhaps then I am evidence that over time givers rise to the tops as takers are exposed and matchers ignored.This book is a case for giving: who gives, how to give, and where it takes us. There is one caveat to all this: it has to be authentic. Giving to get ahead is matching, not giving. People can see right through that.I feared this book would be a “cover spoiler” which I define as a book where the title or cover gives you all the information you really need and the entire book just repeats itself over and over again 200+ pages, but this book is full of wisdom and insights. I think this book is a great investment for leaders young and old.Here’s a great excerpt from the end of the book that wraps it up neatly: “We spend the majority of our waking hours at work. This means that what we do at work becomes a fundamental part of who we are. If we reserve giver values for our personal lives, what will be missing in our professional lives?”

“Givers”, “Takers”, and “Matchers” are three fundamental styles of interacting with others. “Takers” use other people solely for their own gain. “Givers” focus on acting in the interests of others, even when the benefits to others exceed the cost to themselves. “Matchers” operate on the principle of fairness by seeking reciprocity.Which one best describes you in business?Of course, in marriage and friendships, we contribute whenever we can without keeping score. We also shift from one style of behaviour to another, across different work roles and relationships. However, we all have a primary style and it has been shown to play as much of a role in our work success as hard work, talent, and luck.Which style of relating is most likely to end up at the bottom of the success ladder, and which style on top? Pause here for a moment and reflect on your personal experience.Research demonstrates that givers sink to the bottom of the success ladder - they make others better off, but sacrifice their own success. In a study of more than 160 engineers in California the least successful engineers were those who gave more than they received. A study of more than 600 medical students in Belgium, showed the lowest grades going to those described as givers. Salespeople were no different, with givers generating 2 ½ times less in annual sales.“On average, givers earn 14% less money, have twice the risk of becoming victims of crimes, and are judged as 22 % less powerful and dominant,” reports author Professor Adam Grant, the youngest full professor of the Wharton School of Business.If the givers are at the bottom of the success ladder, who then is at the top—takers or matchers?The data reveals a surprising pattern – the givers again! “This pattern holds up across the board,” Grant reports. “The top performers were givers, and they averaged 50 percent more annual revenue than the takers and matchers.” It was only at the start of medical school that givers underperformed. They increased their scores each year and by the sixth year, the givers earned substantially higher grades than their peers. When the givers became doctors, they climbed still further ahead. And this pattern holds true across occupations.David Hornik, a venture capitalist, is admired for his commitment to acting in the best interests of entrepreneurs. When he gives an entrepreneur a term sheet - a bullet-point document outlining the material terms and conditions of a business agreement - he also suggests that they shop around to ensure they get the best deal for themselves. Other investors, and if it is a promising deal there are always others, give entrepreneurs a tight deadline to respond to their offer in order to prevent shopping around.The best venture capitalists have an acceptance rate of nearly 50% of the term sheets they offer. In the 11 years as a venture capitalist, Hornik has offered 28 term sheets and twenty-five have accepted.“In this book, I want to persuade you that we underestimate the success of givers like David Hornik,” Grant asserts.Giving can be more powerful and less dangerous than most would believe. “Givers reverse the popular plan of succeeding first and giving back later, raising the possibility that those who give first are often best positioned for success later,” Adam explains. The venture capitalist Randy Komisar remarks, “It’s easier to win if everybody wants you to win… (If) you don’t make enemies out there, it’s easier to succeed.”Success is less about raw talent or aptitude, and more about the strategies givers use. Givers are not necessarily nice, and they’re not necessarily altruistic.In a purely win-lose interaction, giving rarely pays. Most of life is not win-lose. People who choose giving as their primary reciprocity style end up reaping rewards. One reason why givers take time to succeed, is that it takes time for givers to build goodwill and trust, and establish reputations and relationships that enhance their success.“Being a giver is not good for a 100-yard dash, but it’s valuable in a marathon,” says Chip Conley, founder of Joie de Vivre Hotels. Today, speed is making the long-run shorter, and technology is amplifying the advantages of being a giver. In the past, most people worked in independent jobs that rarely required collaboration, so it was fairly inefficient to be a giver. Today, more than 80 percent of Americans work in service jobs where giving is not a choice, but a business necessity.Steve Jones, the former CEO of one of the largest banks in Australia, commissioned a study of successful financial advisers. It was not financial expertise or effort that made for success, it “was whether a financial adviser had the client’s best interests at heart, above the company’s and even his own.”All this needs to be calibrated by observation, that too many givers become pushovers and doormats, and fail to advance their own interests. What differentiates successful givers from failed givers is the degree to which the givers expressed two key motivations: self-interest and other-interest. Self-interest involves pursuing power and achievement, and other-interest focuses on being generous and helpful.This is well illustrated by a study of “Caring Canadian” award winners. The award is made by the Governor General of Canada to honour volunteers. In their life stories, these highly successful givers mentioned a quest for power and achievement almost twice as often as the comparison group. They also had roughly 20% more objectives related to gaining influence, earning recognition, and attaining individual excellence.Takers score high in self-interest and low in other-interest and selfless givers score high on other-interest and low on self-interest. The book does provide some useful information for grantseekers. I currently work on the grantmaking side of grant writing and agree with the author on certain things to be aware of, include in proposals, etc. I gave it four stars because the writing is a little cheesy and sometimes I find myself weeding through the non-informative stuff to find the good stuff. Overall and easy and informative read for someone starting out in grantseeking/fundraising.

This is the second time I am reading this wonderful guide to grantwriting. It's an excellent resource for grant writers, fundraisers and other nonprofit professionals seeking grants. Cheryl Clarke uses the art of storytelling as a framework for writing grants. It's a great way to get your grant in front of funders. I highly recommend this guide.

I loved this book. It was interesting and full of writing information to make the proposals more interesting. By using the storytelling method, the proposal will be easier to read and more natural. However, it doesn't take away from the technical material that has to be in the proposal.I would recommend this book to anyone writing proposals. It could have been a good book, and it starts well, but by the middle of the book I felt exhausted with statistics, numbers, and endless lists of scholarly and philosophical angles to in-transcendent aspects of the industry. ("Does pornography mean that we are what we watch?"). More than a look inside the porn industry, it's more like a survey of current scholarly discussions about pornography —and sometimes like a Kinsey report. "Is sexting a form of pornography?" — "What are parental controls?" — "What about porn in space?" (are you really interested in this?)I couldn't finish reading the book. Two stars for a good beginning and a boring second part.

It's no secret that pornography is more ubiquitous than ever. But it's also true that erotic art and writing have been around pretty much forever. So how did we get to where we are now, where porn is readily available anywhere there's an internet connection, and the industry generates billions in sales every year? Shira Tarrant explores the subject in The Pornography Industry: What Everyone Needs to Know.First of all, given that The Pornography Industry is published by Oxford University Press, I expected a more scholarly approach. However, it's part of OUP's "What Everyone Needs to Know" series, which, now that I look at the titles, sounds like their version of ". . . For Dummies" books. Tarrant's topical chapters are laid out in a Q&A format, giving brief explanations and answers to a variety of questions. This makes it an easy reference source, but on controversial topics or topics which have divisive positions, just as Tarrant got started with presenting both sides, the section ended.Although Tarrant skips over topics like a rock skipping across a pond, she at least deserves credit for bringing the reader's attention to some of these topics. Her subject is not frequently treated in an evenhanded manner. Most writing about pornography goes to one extreme or the other, defending it wholly, or calling for its prohibition. Suffice it to say that both sides are guilty of exaggeration to make their points, or glossing over facts that don't support their position.Tarrant herself tends to gloss over the negatives of porn. She acknowledges that it can be harmful to relationships. She does not deny a link between sex trafficking and pornography. She notes the toll it can take on the performers, both physically and emotionally. Yet she tends toward a positive, nonjudgmental position in favor of porn. These negatives are part of the "porn wars," things we have to move past. She prefers a more positive view, and provides examples of companies and individuals who are working to make porn less sexist, less racist, and more fair trade (but no less porny).The Pornography Industry would purport to be a scholarly approach to the history and impact of pornography on culture. It is that, but in a watered-down way. It's probably more than you really want to know about porn, but, at the same time, if you really want to know about porn, you will likely need to look elsewhere.Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the complimentary electronic review copy!

Though it focuses heavily on the industry in the U.S., it does touch on world views and practices where possible in the time format of the book.I think this book will be most appreciated by readers who are looking for a sterile, historical look at the industry.

I’m a lifelong Eric Clapton fan, though I can’t say I like everything he puts out. I am familiar with all stages of his musical career, but prior to reading his 2007 autobiography entitled Clapton I knew very little about his personal life other than disjointed anecdotes here and there. In this book, the guitarist extraordinaire offers a candid look back at his roller coaster life. Overall, it’s a pretty satisfying tour through about a half century of rock and roll history. I may not always have enjoyed the ride that Clapton took me on, but I was always thoroughly engaged by it.Perhaps the defining moment in Clapton’s life is his much-discussed romance with George Harrison’s wife Patti Boyd, the inspiration for the Layla album and other songs in Clapton’s body of work. That particular episode proves not to be quite as romantic as the music that was composed around it. Here Clapton admits that as soon as he won Boyd’s love he began cheating on her. In fact, Clapton treats a lot of women like dirt in this book, and delves pretty deeply into the psychological hows and whys of it all. To his credit, however, unlike Pete Townshend in his autobiography Who I Am, Clapton doesn’t ask you to forgive him, beg you to like him, or expect you to admire his exploits. He simply relates everything in a matter-of-fact way, as if to say these are some bad things I’ve done, and there’s nothing I can do about them now.Clapton is equally candid about his substance abuse, and his story of recovery is inspiring. One can’t help but admire the way he eventually turned his life around. Yet the book is frustrating because for most of its length he is still very much an emotional child. He doesn’t really get his act together until his mid-50s, when he marries a woman 30 years his junior. At that point you’re happy for him, but the book also starts to get boring as Clapton becomes your grandpa, talking about “computer culture” (owning a laptop), shopping for shoes in Japan, and the necessity of taking a nap every afternoon.As revealing and cathartic as all the talk about his drug use and alcoholism may be, the reader is left wishing Clapton had devoted more ink to his music. He covers Blind Faith, Cream, and Derek and the Dominos pretty well, but glosses over much of his solo career. He left the Yardbirds because their music was too poppy and not true to the blues, but he doesn’t feel the need to justify his later forays into easy listening, smooth jazz, and Luther Vandross-style R&B. Some of his greatest albums, like Slowhand, he dismisses as sloppy, drunken playing. His own personal favorite is Pilgrim, an album which critics frequently cite as one of his all-time worst.A really good rock and roll biography will make me want to go back and dig out that artist’s old albums, thereby reliving some of his or her glory days. This book didn’t do that for me. As much as I love his guitar playing, I’d have to say my respect for the man diminished a bit after reading his life story. Not only were some of his moral choices off-putting, but he just doesn’t come across as intelligent as you might expect a virtuoso musician to be. I’m not here to criticize Clapton’s life, however, but rather to review his book. There’s no denying that Clapton the book is well written and covers a lot of what you’d want to know about the man. It isn’t always fun or exciting, but it’s consistently informative, surprisingly candid, and provides a great deal of insight into the man behind the music.

Eric does a great job of recalling every major phase of his life, even the 'lost years' of near obligatory heroin addiction. The work is almost inspirational, as Clapton exudes positive vibes towards the full range of rock legends and near legends. The blues take center stage and Clapton cites nearly every major bluesman as an influence. Although Clapton references his god-like stature among guitar leads, one never gets the sense of a swollen ego. If anything, he seems to downplay his virtuoso status. Unlike Richards in 'Life', Clapton does not spend much time on the technical aspects of playing or on musical innovations he pioneered. My favorite song, Badge, barely gets a mention, and even Sunshine of Your Love is a passing paragraph. And don't expect Clapton to dish much dirt; he doesn't have a harsh word to say about anyone, even those he parted with under bitter circumstances. Clapton seems to realize he didn't really grow up until he was in his late 40's, and many women suffered from his self-serving childishness. I found the constant positivity to be a bit forced, likely the result of 20 years as a successfully recovering addict. I feel I know Clapton better, but there is a certain lack of dimension to this self portrait.

I had seen Clapton while he was out of his skull on heroin, downward, and booze. I hated that he ruined the music, because of his self-indulgence. Even then, I knew Clapton was out of control and robbed the blues in exchange for instant gratification. He was suicidal, in my opinion. I couldn't understand then dependency and enabling behaviors. Years later and after having an understanding of mental health issues stemming from childhood, I understood how loved ones get caught up in the user's tsunamis. I saw Clapton a few years after Conor's fall and believed that he was either going to chose to live or die.This book should be on a list for anyone who faces addiction or dependency. The people who love the user give up living for themselves and become the caregivers. Clapton was as honest as he could be about his emotional pain and downward spiral, giving others a path to sobriety.Getting clean is easy but staying sober is a lifelong commitment and requires work.Thank you Eric for keeping a journal and telling a story that is filled with the music of life. You are correct when you say spiritual belief and music will always be heard.

This book is a gift to music history in telling an honest story of life lived in absurdity. Words rang true for me. To prefer to be in the shadows and yet able to practice the enumerable hours for proficiency through all the hailstorms of drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, cynical joking, dangerous chance taking, sex and unrelenting touring and recording schedules.......... This makes sense to me. Sat on 3 rd row of Factory in Phila. In 1968 and he would face away from audience and sometimes connect in a nod to Jack or Ginger. Thank you for sharing your gift even when it hurt you to do so. Sorry it hurt so much and thank God you are living life now.
