About the Author

Andrew T. Pittman, PhD, is a clinical associate professor in the HLKN department at Texas A&M University, where he is assistant director of the Sport Management Division. Pittman has authored two other books as well as numerous chapters in books and articles in refereed journals. He is a frequent presenter at conferences from the local to the international levels on topics related to sport law. Pittman is a member of many organizations, including the Society of Health and Physical Educators (formerly AAHPERD), the National Sports Law Institute, the North American Society for Sport Management, the Sports Lawyers Association, and the Sport and Recreation Law Association. John O. Spengler, JD, PhD, is a professor and director of the University of Florida’s Sport Policy and Research Collaborative. Spengler received his bachelor’s degree from Wake Forest University, his law degree from the University of Toledo, and his PhD from Indiana University. His research focuses on legal and policy issues relevant to sport and recreation, obesity prevention and physical activity, and structural environmental factors (social and physical) that influence health. Spengler’s research has been funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to study policies relevant to improving opportunities for physical activity. He is a volunteer with the American Heart Association, where his research has informed AHA policy and advocacy efforts at the state and national level to improve community health through physical activity.  Spengler’s work has been published in numerous journals, books, and commissioned research papers and presented through webinars, panels, and professional presentations. He serves on the advisory board of the Aspen Institute’s Project Play and Physical Literacy Working Group and has served as president of the Sport and Recreation Law Association, associate editor of the Journal of Legal Aspects of Sport, and a board member for SHAPE America. Honors include selection as a University of Florida Research Foundation professor in recognition of research and scholarly achievements and two-time UF College of Health and Human Performance Teacher of the Year. He also received the Fame for Fitness Award from the Florida Sports Hall of Fame in recognition of his work on childhood obesity prevention, the University of Toledo School of Law Order of the Coif Jurisprudence Award, and SHAPE America’s Distinguished Scholar award. He is a research fellow for both the SHAPE America Research Consortium and the Sport and Recreation Law Association. Spengler resides in Gainesville, FL. He enjoys sports and outdoor activities. Sarah J. Young, PhD, is an associate professor in the department of recreation, park, and tourism studies at Indiana University. She has more than a decade of experience in administering and programming campus intramural sport programs and teaches legal aspects courses to undergraduate and graduate students in sport and recreation. Young has published numerous articles and book chapters in sport and recreation publications and has given more than 50 presentations at professional conferences. Wheeler Winston Dixon is the James Ryan Professor of Film Studies, Coordinator of the Film Studies Program, Professor of English at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, and, with Gwendolyn Audrey Foster, editor of the new book series Quick Takes: Movies and Popular Culture for Rutgers University Press. He is the author of more than thirty books on film history, theory and criticism, as well as more than 100 articles in various academic journals. He is also an active experimental filmmaker, whose works are in the permanent collection of The Museum of Modern Art.His recent books include Black & White Cinema: A Short History (2015); Streaming: Movies, Media and Instant Access (2013); Death of the Moguls: The End of Classical Hollywood (2012); 21st Century Hollywood: Movies in the Era of Transformation (2011, co-authored with Gwendolyn Audrey Foster); A History of Horror (2010); and Film Noir and the Cinema of Paranoia (2009). Those readers looking for a book solely about apocalyptic films will only be partially satisfied by this intelligent, incisive book. While it does delve into the ways apocalypse is presented in American films, covering quite a few of them, it's more an examination of American culture itself & its fascination with destruction. Nor does the author restrict himself to images & fantasies, which he demonstrates are both fed by a consumerist culture while helping to create & maintain that same culture. He goes more deeply, examining the power of the almighty dollar in creating increasingly shallow but visually spectacular films that have immediate visceral appeal, much as a roller coaster does, while avoiding any food for thought afterwards. These films aren't designed to make the viewer think, but simply to feel -- as intensely & vividly & shallowly as possible. In their pursuit of pure sensation, they approach a kind of emotional pornography of immediate gratification: raw, exhilarating, and constantly lowering the lowest common denominator. This, the author suggests, is indicative of our consumerist culture as a whole.Further, he shows how this seething rush of garish, giddy trauma affects political & social discourse -- or more precisely, how it short-circuits rational discourse in favor of an easily manipulated blaze of jittery emotion in need of a focus, a target, a scapegoat. And of course there are more than enough groups ready & eager to provide that focus, in order to serve their own financial & political purposes. One of the artistic prices of this approach, of course, is the death of film as potential art & its replacement as nothing but commodity. He even delves into the physical replacement of film by digital technology, and how that adds to both the profit margin & the fear margin.While this is fascinating material for any thoughtful reader, let me hasten to add that the author never succumbs to convoluted jargon. He has the knack of handling complexity in an accessible manner, never dumbing it down, always making it quite clear & succinct. Considering the spate of jingoistic films we've been getting from Hollywood lately, this is vital reading for anyone concerned about the political & military excesses of the post 9/11 world. Highly recommended!

I always found it fascinating how American audiences (and film makers) love the cinematic spectacles of self destruction. From the great San Francisco to the discreet On the Beach all the way to the more recent Deep Impact (Special Collector's Edition),The Day After Tomorrow (Two-Disc All-Access Collector's Edition),Cloverfield [Theatrical Release] and I Am Legend (Widescreen Two-Disc Special Edition) (not forgetting the once-controversial The Day After, naturally).I, for example, freely admit that I love those films. And I love them perhaps because of my personal taste for (among many other things) the radically different premise they put in front of us: the vision of a world you dot see every day. And more important: it's not for real... no strings attached.And if we decide to focus our study just on that angle alone, I am sure we can identify many trends going on today. And they all represent big meals for those who care to dine. They would all make great subjects for serious study.That was exactly what I was expecting when I bought this great book.Mr. Dixon has a great knowledge of films, meaning that he is an experienced viewer... and he backs everything he says with the right data and the actual numbers. I will not try to summarize the book... but basically, what he offers is a long and valid (but somehow debatable - that's what I think) reflection on how the Hollywood film industry in particular (and all the other cultural industries in general) function today AND they way they drive (and shape) its audience towards certain... let's say "tastes".And Mr Dixon does that very well.The big major flaw, in my modest opinion, is that... from page one all the way to the end, Mr Dixon's very precise analysis left a bitter taste of prejudice and discrimination under my tongue against commercial Cinema. Maybe that's because I myself teach Film Production (and work in that area) and therefore (maybe), have a different view on the matter. What I feel is that Mr. Dixon violently criticizes an Industry (and a system of things) he clearly dislikes without taking some time and distance to see a bigger, broader picture.And that analysis make up for 90% of the book. It IS a great analysis... but it comes from someone who seems to have picked just one side. I agree with him on most everything. But I miss the other side. I believe the things Mr. Dixon criticizes have their own reason of existing. They do fill some void. He and I may not like them (it may not be our personal taste). But we have to understand why they are there.Sometimes, the great scholar becomes a (I wish I wouldn't have to use the word) snob critic when he starts throwing adjectives like "awful" to films that are much more than JUST that. At a certain point, several films and people get classified upon adjectives and terms that seems prejudicial. I'm not saying one cannot express his own feelings. But hardly that easily in the middle of such a great analysis.I was expecting a different book... specially because the analysis of today's big self destruction spectacles was not fully accomplished.BUT I still strongly recommend this book because (even after all I've pointed) Mr. Dixon DOES give us an astounding job. Really. It's a great book. His reflections on 9/11, its media coverage and the impact it had on American Cinema is top notch. His views on War Cinema are quite excellent.Again: a great book.

The title of this book is misleading. The author discusses the Cold War (including films of the Cold War period), the contemporary threat of terrorism, the decline of the film industry and U.S. society in general, contemporary politics, and dozens of films that have nothing to do with the apocalyptic genre. However, he barely discusses what he title proclaims, "visions of the apocalypse / spectacles of destruction in American cinema," and he discusses no recent apocalyptic films whatsoever. I wonder if the title was chosen just to make the book sell better.

Many decades ago, his "Testament of Devotion" changed my life. He introduced me to mystics and led me to understand my own experiences of Light. I just became aware of this book, and I eagerly downloaded it. It touched me so very deeply. It addresses my concerns about spiritual decline and the inner hunger to know God. Often I have said that my goal is to help people know God, not just know about God. I treasure this book and plan to read it again from time to time.

This volume is the sequel to A TESTAMENT OF DEVOTION. I read Kelly with wonder and love. I cannot write with his power, authority and simplicity. Read instead a short and passionate passage from "The Richard Cary Lecture " in The Eternal Promise by Thomas Kelly himself.How God Breaks into Human LivesThe experience of God breaking into a human life is the experience of an invasion from beyond of an Other who in gentle power breaks in upon our littleness and in tender expansiveness makes room for Himself. Had we thought Him an intruder? No, God's first odor is sweetness, God's touch an imparting of power. Suddenly, a tender giant walks by our side, no, strides within our puny footsteps. We are no longer our little selves. As two bodies closely fastened together and whirled in the air revolve in part about the heavier body, so life gets a new center, from which are moved. It is as if the center of life had been shifted beyond ourselves, so that we are no longer our old selves. Paul speaks truly when he says that we no longer live, but Christ lives in us, dynamic, energetic, creative, persuasive. It is the life rooted and grounded in the Presence, the Life which has been found by the Almighty. Seek it, seek it. Yet it lies beyond seeking. It arises in being found. To have come only as far as religious determination is only to have stood in the vestibule. But our confidence in our shrewdness, in our education, in our talents, in some aspect or other of our self-assured self; is our own undoing. So earnestly busy with anxious, fevered efforts for the Kingdom of God have we been, that we failed to hear the knock upon the door, and to know that our chief task is to open the door and be entered by the Divine Life.

When I started reading this book, I got concerned that I had bought another dud by James Patterson. If you'e like me, you have bought a number of stories written by this man. The secret to his becoming the king of the bestsellers is his teaming with other writers, becoming the most prolific writer in modern times. Along the way, though, he has authored some terrific, fun stories, and some, shall we say, less than spectacular novels."The Chef" is a bit too talkative in the early chapters, bragging just a bit too much in regards to his abilities in the kitchen. Yet, I also have to confess that I would love to sample some of his fare!POV: As we get further along, we are exposed to a great deal of page-turning action told to us in first person POV.BLUSH FACTOR: There is only one eff word, but a goodly number of milder profanities. There also is a great deal of violence, and reference to sex, but not obscene or graphic in my opinion. I wouldn't want to read it to members of my parish or to youngsters, but that's just me. I did have a great deal of fun reading this novel and, I confess, I got a little choked up, sentimentally, near the end.WRITING & EDITING: After a bit of annoyance at the opening chapter, I felt this was one of Patterson's better books of late.BOTTOM LINE:I rate this is a fun, almost spectacular, Patterson read.Four stars out of five.

I don't know why I keep buying these. Every time I say to myself, this one will be better.But they never are. He's lost it. I think he's stopped trying. He'll put his name on anything. Stand alone book that part's right. I can't imagine a series of this ego-maniac. Supercop, Killer Chief, homewrecker.

I thought this book moved kind of slow, then it would pick up, then slow...it just seemed a little choppy. The flow was way off for me and I had trouble getting through it. And the food descriptions were a little over the top. It seemed there was more emphasis on that than the action. Hopefully his next book will be better...

I am an avid James Patterson fan, but this book was not up to his normal standards, in my opinion. I guess if you want some interesting ideas for food dishes, it might work for you, but in my opinion the story was beyond stretching the imagination, and poorly written more like a new author trying to write their first book...

The characters were too unbelievable, except the exwife Marlene. Really the wife of a wealthy, prominent restauranteur is going to come out to the food truck to flirt with the ex-cop? Not realistic, nor the husband's response of crying saying he is sorry to the cop for how he treated his wife, THEN, husband leaves the house and cop sleeps with wife in the married couple's bed, like, that same night?! Also, ex-cop is single handedly saving New Orleans!?! I thought it read like a lame soap opera. I gave it one star and even read the whole thing just because of the name Patterson.

I have read over 90% of Patterson's books. I am always exited to see a new release! Being a Chef for over 20 years I was particularly exited to read "The Chef"... To say I was disappointed would be an understatement!The first few chapters were fine but than the wheels came off Killer Chef. There was no plot development. The story was disjointed, uninspiring, and not believable. It was as if I was reading a rough draft that nobody bothered to proof.Simply put...Amateur Hour. Not worth the money. Not worthy to have James Patterson's name on it.

I'm an Alex Cross and Michael Bennett fan. While waiting for their next adventure, thought I would give this a try. It didn't disappoint. The NOLA setting was fresh and the characters likeable. I think it laid a great foundation for future books. Only disappointment was the relationship between Rooney and Vanessa. I thought it was pretty implausible the way it went from 0 to 60 mph with virtual strangers, one of whom was married, going from "hello" to deeply in love in such a short window. Was a little disappointed with Rooney's total lack of hesitation in bedding another man's wife, even if said man was an a--hole. That said, I will watch for sequels, and hope the characters develop more.

I've been a fan of James Patterson for a long time. I can't say that I haven't been disappointed in his books before but this one seems well written and well thought out. It's not a here we go again boring read that seems to promote a lot of real world companies and material things. I actually really enjoyed this book almost to the point that I didn't want to put it down. I honestly think that he should stick to what he does best, spellbinding novels. I don't want to give any spoilers yet keep an eye on the issues that he raised in this book. Good job!!

The book could have been better written, but as is, it provides a full scope on widget based user interfaces.I gave the book 4 stars because it covers version 4. A book on version 5 addressing the same scope of material could be useful. Also, I think they could tighten the presentation to better segment the material into theory, concept, design, API, and description of demo App that illustrates the API. Still a good and useful book.

While this text is now out of date in terms of the many important `minor' improvements and the IDE in the last ~2 years, it remains the very best place to start things I have found. It's advanced brother (also available here) covers few more pragmatic programming techniques, but is also a bit dated. Of course on top of all that is the announcement in 2011 by Nokia that they will be using a Windows approach for future phones which has many people questioning the Qt future itself. I presume you are reading this because you decided (in spite of that) to try Qt for a project of you own.This book is fairly dense but technically quite precise. I find myself re-reading the first ~four chapters to grasp the key terminology and I continue to find Qt more elegant than Mac or Windows who each have decades of baggage at this point. The authors know their stuff. Once you have the basics, the remaining 2/3rd cover the normal collection of programming tasks in a direct way. Qt is much more then just the GUI part. Unless your tasks are very diverse, you will likely only read what you need. The only `missing' content to my mind is a deeper review of debugging methods when things go amiss.If you are not moderately up on GUIs and the concepts of event driven programming in general, you might be overwhelmed a bit. But if you are, then you will not have your time wasted on such things. Rather, the text simply states how Qt does what it does with a bit more perspective on the design approach then the on-line documents have. That's was what I needed to fit it into my world view. It is not to my mind a restatement of the man pages as another reviewed stated, rather it is more like the style found in the 1984 classic "Inside Macintosh " manuals.

I've been a C,C++ then C# developer for the better part of 30 years, but just discovered QT this year after having spent my whole career with a love/hate relationship using Microsoft frameworks and tools. It would have saved me a lot of frustration if I had had this book sooner. I now love the QT framework but almost gave up on it early on. There is way too much disjointed and out of date information out there on the web, but this book puts it all together in a very straightforward and readable manner. I only gave it 4 stars for not being up to date with QT 5.4.

Great book, don't be misguided by negative or mixed reviews. I already own a book on Qt 3.0, and approached Qt programming, but never had sufficient time to become proficient in it. Now I have an important project to be developed using Qt and I was looking for an up-to-date book. This book is really great, covers all what you need and in detail. Some reviews lament the fact that the detail is not sufficient, but, in my view, it would be very hard to provide more detail than the book already offers - it really covers all you need to become proficient in Qt. If you are familiar with C++, you will have no problems picking up the subject and the pace will be right for you.
