This is a great book. It is easy to read and is a fast read. It is insightful, which is interesting considering the Rabbi is following a specific formula with each entry and repeating it over and over. Still, it is Inclusive and opened me up about what it means to be a force for light in this world. It didn't introduce me into anything I haven't thought before, but is like a concentrated syrum that evokes a sense that you need to be a force for change, a change agent, otherwise you are doing it wrong. You can't go wrong reading this book. I may have my doubts about the originality of the book, considering how heavily the Rabbi relies on quotes and then builds to the next point he wants to make. He shifts quickly, never resting too heavily on a particular citation. However, he doesn't back away from the truth of the text he is explicating, so I respect that. It is clear he did good in grad school. This is very solid work though rubbing close to being derived.

Pirkei Avot made relevant for a modern audience! This was a really interesting take on the teachings of the ancient rabbis and the book brought a lot of their teachings to life. I liked the diversity of the sources and how Rabbi Shmuly combined insights from old thinkers and new thinkers alike to weave a unique modern commentary. This is a must read for anyone interested in how Jewish thought & ethics are still relevant in these turbulent times.

Rabbi Yanklowitz has an untouchable ability to shed the light of inspiration on thought from centuries ago.

Phenomenal book truly inporational. Highly recommended for anyone in social justice work.

James A. Michener was one of the world’s most popular writers, the author of more than forty books of fiction and nonfiction, including the Pulitzer Prize–winning Tales of the South Pacific, the bestselling novels The Source, Hawaii, Alaska, Chesapeake, Centennial, Texas, Caribbean, and Caravans, and the memoir The World Is My Home. Michener served on the advisory council to NASA and the International Broadcast Board, which oversees the Voice of America. A sequel of sorts to Tales of the South Pacifc, Return to Paradise takes a different formal track than that of the earlier volume. Here, in a collection of independent short stories, Michener precedes each tale with an essay that ranges in subject matter from geo-political argument to virtual travel brochure. The result is an overall effort that does not equal that of Tales of the South Pacific but whose individual stories sometimes rise above anything he has written before.Most of the essays are not only readable but provide essential background information for the fictional short stories. All but two, that is. The essays on New Zealand and Australia are unbearable abominations. Yet the stories that follow, which rely upon those essays for their crispness and assumptions, are two of the best in the book, especially "Until They Sail," the story of four New Zealand sisters who strike up romances with American troops during World War II.Still, it is the stories of the tropical South Pacific I most like. The stories about Tahiti and Polynesia, the Marquesas, Guadalcanal, the Solomons, Fiji. "Povenaaa's Daughter" and "The Mynah Birds" will last with me for quite some time. One final note worth remarking, each and every story ends with a sharp, shocking twist. You quickly come to expect them, and, for that reason, they lose their punch, although never their shock.These two works of Michener, Tales of the South Pacific and Return to Paradise, for me, are his best works. They show the writer at his freshest, before he became a living corporation for producing bestsellers (not that the later works do not have merit--Michener was a master storyteller at every stage of his career). But it is the stories of the South Seas and America's presence in the Pacific during and right after World War II that I most appreciate. Readers will always be able to revisit the books and stories on the South Pacific and get something new out of them. I'm not sure the same can be said for the enormous epics that followed.

James Michener, author of tales of the South Pacific, once again returns to the islands in the Pacific open parens this time with his wife goes parens and they spend a year in the late 1940s revisiting many of the Island's you visited in Tales of the South Pacific.Each chapter is about a different Island. Each chapter begins with all the details mr. Michener knows about the island. Then he follows that narration with a fictional short story using fictional characters living on the island. But, the book is not just a series of short stories, it does include a wealth of information and history about each island and how the islands have developed different characters who live there.You may not like all of the fictional characters in the book, or their philosophies, but, you should enjoy the book, as I did.David Kamins

I enjoyed the book because my father was in Guadalcanal and several other of these islands during the war when I was a baby. This gave me a chance to see how horrible the experience must have been for the men who gave their lives for our freedom and that of Australia and New Zealand. Being a beach bum is not all it’s imagined to be! But the beauty of the islands is wonderful to read about and enjoy.

This is, in a way, a follow-up to Mitchner's Tales of the South Pacific. The time is five years after the end of World War II. It is more like Mitchner's later books with factual chapters about the South Pacific interspersed with anecdotal chapters giving life, flavor, and character to its inhabitants. From Australia and New Zealand to the New Hebrides and Polynesia, he describes each islands' unique features; how some you may want to live in, why some you would want to avoid. The detail is intense with out being tedious, truly captivating, a great, fun-read as only Mitchner can provide.

Typical Michener - - great geographical, historical, and character development. I liked Hawaii better and Rascals in Paradise as well, but I've never met a Michener book I could put down. My favorites are, Chesapeake (all time #1), Texas, Hawaii, Alaska, any of the South Pacific stories. Highly recommend any Michener book.

Great detail, although a little dated, now. I read this just before a long cruise in the South Pacific, and many of the descriptions proved to be accurate enough to get much more out of our visits to some of the same islands that Michener describes in this book. The format is a nice combination of description and drama for each of the locations he covers. Easy and engaging read!

I purchased this book after seeing the 1953 movie based on one of the stories in "Return to Paradise". After reading the book, I discovered that Michener painted a picture of Polynesia and the South Pacific as being both a heaven and a hell. Unlike the 'travelog" descriptions by the media and travel indusrty, Michener is brutally honest. He describes both the things that make the South Pacific a place of indescribable beauty and a place exactly the opposite by telling interweaving tales of events and people in various places. These stories are eye-opening giving a taste of reality in this blend of fact and fiction.I recommend this as a mandatory reading for any American who wishes to go beyond the typical tourist venues of any of these South Pacific Paradises, otherwise they may be in for a shock. Until I read this book, I wanted to retire to and live in one of the many places Michener writes about. I now realize, where I live is closer to my idea of Paradise than what I envisioned the places of the South Pacific.

Sane format as other Michener books. Not as good as the Source and a few others however, still a fascinating read. If you enjoy learning while being entertained then this as well as other Michener novels are for you.

The best way to describe this book is as an entire season of a TV show.There are 8 main POV characters (and numerous secondary and tertiary characters) and their storylines don't always overlap. They have their own arcs with rises and falls that often complement each other, but don't always match. But then you get to the season finale...and it's huge in scope and impact and emotions.The first 1/4 of the book is a little slow, a lot of dominoes were set up. and characters were (re)introduced. But any slowness in the set up pays off x100. And it pays off in this emotional catharsis. The characters get soaring victories, moments of happiness and joy. And for every victory, there’s a tragedy, a moment that’s written to calibrate exactly the maximal pain. After 3 books with these characters, I really care about what happens to them and am very attached. (And okay, yes, I also ship so many of these characters, but especially Sam and Evie).On top of all this wonderful character development is a thread, of underlying musings on America and its place in history. It's very well developed and well researched and feel so relevant today, even though this book is set in the 1920s.Bray has created characters that I care about deeply, and I can't wait to see how all these complex story lines resolve in the final book. (Final note - listen to the audiobooks of this series. The narrator, January LaVoy, is truly phenomenal.)

The Diviners series is one of my favorite ongoing series! Set in 1920s New York, this series follows several young Diviners, or people with supernatural powers, as they discover their abilities and battle ghosts from beyond the veil (or tear...?). The young group that we follow is an incredibly diverse mix of characters:-Evie O'Neill-Sam Lloyd (Russian and Jewish)-Theta Knight (Creole)-Henry DuBois (gay)-Ling Chan (Irish/Chinese, asexual who likes ladies, disabled)-Memphis and Isiah Campbell (African American)We follow each character at different points throughout the series and they each have such distinct voices. From the brash, selfish, and flashy Evie to the incredibly smart and no nonsense Ling to the poetic and protective Memphis.Aside from the characters, the author does an incredible job of building the atmosphere. Not only is it spooky and sometimes downright terrifying but it also discusses the identities of each of the characters against the political backdrop of the times. Libba Bray discusses issues of immigration, eugenics, disability, and race and ethnicity.It's a bit of spoiler to discuss the plot of this novel as it is the third in the series, but the plot does really slow down here, without the contained story line of the other novels, as we ramp up to the final installment of the series. There's a lot of exploration of the Diviners powers as well as trying to put some of the pieces from previous novels together. The tone does get quite dark as the community starts to turn against the Diviners.TW: sexual assault, somewhat graphic murder scenes, death, violence.

Libba Bray is very bit as much as poet as her character Memphis is. While Memphis writes verse in the style of the Harlem Renaissance poets, Bray writes prose in her own inimitable style, weaving a gripping suspense story that in all its complexities delves into the subjects of good and evil, life and death, and ordinary and extraordinary. Her readers, me among them, are sucked in, wanting these wonderful, flawed characters to prevail, to push back against the nightmarish King of Crows. Bray succeeds in stretching readers to the limits of our nerves, creeping us out while making us beg for more. richly endowing her characters with all the achingness of humanity. I am beyond eager to read the next book, because I feel as though I've walked through hell alongside Evie, Sam, Henry, Lin, Theta, Memphis and Isaiah, Jericho, and all the others. I want, no, I need, to know what happens next!...And after all, isn't that what makes a series of novels successful? Greedy readers! Count me among them.

I preordered this book as soon as I heard it was available and I am not disappointed in any way. This is one of my favorite series to read/have red.This is the third book in this series, and it really pushes the story along as many questions are starting to get answers, the characters stories are expanded, and we see them really come together for a common goal. There are a lot of social issues covered, all of them relevant to the time and our time also. I did not feel this was propaganda for the author's politics. All of the characters are young, just starting thier adult lives and these are issues you would face privately and in the world as you learn how to navigate the adult world. The end of the book came much too soon and I did not want to leave, hopefully I won't have to wait as long for the next book as I did for this one. I can not reomend this book/ series enough.

This book is not for dummies, but it is excellent as an introduction to the language. It was a fabulous help as I prepared for travel to Poland. The book includes a CD that presents all-aural examples and a text that explained all the basic grammar, with essential vocabulary lists and sample sentences. I was exceedingly well-prepared for travel, having used this in conjunction with other media. Does not say the sentence in English, only Polish, but gives the situation or context. I used it for several months of listening to train my ear whenever I drove anywhere, before beginning to take notes from the book. The notebook that resulted was most helpful, even after I was in the country. Ms. Gabryanczyk has done an outstanding job of presenting practice in initial aural immersion and written practice.

This is a good book and a great deal of effort has gone into it. Of course to learn Polish, you will need more than one book. I also like the Teach Yourself Book: "Polish - A Complete Course for Beginners," by Nigel Gotteri and Joanna Michalak-Gray There are a few editions of this book. The one I prefer is an older version, available used. The ISBN number (which you can type in under Books) is: 0-8442-3704-3. It's available used for around $6 (as of May 2017). One of the reasons I like this book is because most of the translations are quite literal, which I think is important if one is trying to learn the language.

I recently moved to Poland for a short term work assignment. I don't speak any Polish and only had about a week's notice, so I needed something that would help me learn some basics quickly. This book was very helpful with learning everyday phrases and common words. It explains the pronunciation of words in an easy to understand manner and provides countless examples of conversations and explanations of cultural quirks. It's definitely a good choice for those who might be traveling to Poland and would like to understand a bit of the language and culture upon arrival.

I've used the book to brush up on my Polish before my first trip to Warsaw. Whether or not you've studied any languages before in school as an English speaker, this will probably be the quickest way for you to learn Polish. It goes through how their consonants and vowels are sounded out, most useful verbs and nouns, and offers enough interesting tidbits about Poland to keep you reading.

I spoke some simple polish as a child and wanted to enhance my ability to speak as well as write in Polish. I have living relatives in Poland which i would like to communicate with possibly by phone as well as writing. I found the book to be very helpful in doing just that. I also can see why it would be difficult for someone without a polish background to pick up a new language such as Polish. It is a difficult language to learn. However, this book contains a lot of example, very useful vocabulary, the most important words or phrases are remarked and highlighted and suitable audios that helps to understand everything. Moreover, the author tells you some Polish anecdotes, tricks or culture stuff that develop a better understanding.The only problem with this book is that, as all lesson are not organized correctly, you can start with any lesson you want, so, some important details may be missed if you had not studied Polish before. So, if you want to learn Polish easily using this book, you should study some basic stuff before.

This book seems to be well written and simplified enough to make it possible to learn the basics. I have reviewed a couple of others that are so technical that learning even simple phrases looks overwhelming.

This is a great first book to get for learning Polish. Good basic descriptions and introduction to grammar. Also, I lot of good social and cultural tips given along the way through the book. I would recommend to anyone who wants to get started in learning this language.

Great purchase

This book does not have the level of technical detail required to perform mechanical repairs on a Vespa. While it illustrates some procedures pictorally, it lacks some very basic info. There are no torque tables, timing specs, technical data by year, etc..Yes, you should own it but, more of a supplement than a staple.

I am not sure of the content of the this manual since this was a gift for my father for his 1966 Vespa 90. I assume that is contains sufficient info to totally rebuild this with him.I own MANY Haynes manuals for cars and trucks so I expect that this will be as detailed. (Although, I must say that is is REALLY thin. Maybe there is not much to them nor much difference in the models...)

Great book, a must have for any one restoring a vintage Vespa

This is a great book for minor OR major repair to Vespa scooters. It covers vintage models of different styles. For the Sprint 150cc, I found the wiring diagram easy and helpful. It appears the diagrams for others were as complete. All were color coded as well. The book is well illustrated for most any job necessary.

Good overview and directions. I wish it had more step by step but about same as Chilton books. I use this and Youtube to fix stuff.

Very poor quality photos. Book is 88 pages

This is a great book for early Vespa fans who want to restore or maintain an older Vespa scooter. This guy knows his stuff and has added lots of photos, good descriptions and helpful notes.

One of the most well written personal stories I have ever read. I actually read it twice! I have long admired Katherine Graham and the way that she handled the challenges that faced her. The death of her husband and the decision to take over the Post and the growth of the company were all challenges that she faced and she did it, not believing that she was worthy of any of it. She was an amazing woman who lived a one in a million life. I love her and this book. It is a great read.

Wow! Personal History is exceptionally well-written and the voice is authentic. I'm grateful to Katharine Graham for giving us this window into her life. Many of us were a part of the history of the periods she covers and have an attachment to the Washington Post, nurtured by her family for all of those years. She had many advantages in life, but much was expected of her and much was given by her. When the times called for courage, there was Katharine Graham (now being played by Meryl Streep in the new movie *The Post*) being true to her calling as owner and publisher of a great paper, with fidelity to the truth and a commitment to the good of our country. The Washington Post is still a great, inevitably imperfect, source of news and salvation for our democratic republic and we can thank Graham, her family, and the other truth-tellers for that. In Katharine we have a woman who served honorably, with greatness, only when thrust into a leadership role she never coveted. I wish I had known her personally.

I got this book after I saw the movie, “The Post.” The narrative is surprisingly engaging—to be honest I could hardly put it down for the 3 days it took me to read it. What a courageous woman Kay Graham was! She has my utmost respect. I felt like I was going through her life with her. A beautifully organized book. The first few chapters on her parents and her early life were such an excellent introduction to her future life. She was able to grow and adapt to all the change in her life, but you understood the pain and worry she was going through. An unbelievably honest woman who lets you know all about the problems of trying to run a company and help it grow both from a journalistic viewpoint of absolute integrity and a corporate viewpoint of maintaining profitability. One of the best books I have read!

I'm in my 60s, so Katherine Graham was a name I was familiar with. After watching the movie The Post, I interested in learning about her. While I found some of the chapters very dry, it was fascinating to learn of her very upper class and rather odd childhood. How her wealthy family was shunned by other wealthy New York elite due to her father's Jewish heritage. Her complete acquiescence to her husband, her volatile mother and her own admission of not knowing any better than to leave the raising of her children to nannies. It was a look into a world very different from anything I've experienced.

A very candid account of her life, packed with details of a different time to more current day issues. Particularly interesting reflections on the role of women over time, and how this intelligent and capable woman came to find her own strength. Lots of name dropping which annoys petty old me, but really the people in her life are interesting in themselves-- and interesting how all those paths crossed from early days when they weren't well known names. It is the story of the elite, and the great privilege that comes with wealth both inherited and earned, this can be irritating. But also refreshing in that these powerful folks were altruistic and idealistic, and acted on those ideals even at personal cost.

Mrs. Graham led an extraordinary life. She was born into privilege and money and worked as a reporter, in an era in which she was raised to be a wife, mother, and runner of households. She became one of the most powerful women in industry by pursuing the knowledge she needed, as she needed it. Mrs. Graham tells her story primarily through the peak events of her personal and corporate life: the suicide of her husband, the Pentagon Papers, and a major labor strike. A wonderful read.

Katherine Graham's Autobiography is long and exhausting - she unsparingly discusses all aspects of her life. She culls information from diaries, letters she sent and received, memoranda, interviews and articles and then she chronicles her life from the earliest days to her retirement from the Washington Post. "I recognize the inherent danger of being self-serving and have tried to retain as much detachment as possible, but I wanted to tell what happened just as I saw it." :Born into the wealthy Jewish Meyer family, close to her father, educated at boarding school and the University of Chicago, she became an aspiring reporter in San Francisco covering a violent labor dispute. She married Phil Graham, whose "brains, ability, and charm were legendary among his people." Alas he suffered from severe depression and committed suicide just after returning to her after a nasty affair that threatened her beloved Washington Post. We learn about the Grahams' relationship with the Kennedy clan, President Johnson, Nixon, Ford and Reagan. Many episodes (The Pentagon Papers etc) are spell-binding and Katherine often bet the very survival of the company on her beliefs. Often, her actions are difficult to understand - yes, she was deferential to the males (her father, her husband), but it often became a convenient crutch, While Graham's prose is very easy to read, the book is difficult to digest - it took me several tries to finish.
