I first met Ryan when I attended a presentation that he co-hosted discussing the differences between Baby Boomers and Millennials. His style and knowledge impressed me so much that, when I needed a speaker for a conference, I called Ryan. And now that he has put his knowledge on paper, when I have a question about Millennials, I will reach for this book.Why is this book important? The Millennials are now the largest generational group in the US and in the world. Really, are millenials special? They think they're the brightest and the best. ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL coffee table book (a nice treat when you have a few moments to check out a few pages at a time). HIGHLY RECOMMEND to any animal lover (I'm a cat lady, but I love all animals). That face on the cover is what drew me in. The book itself is very nice quality for gift giving.

Gorgeous and wonderful coffee table book that makes any home better. I am biased as my dog is on p. 131. I gave a copy to my vet as a thank you and for her waiting room.

Don't be mislead by this book's title! Different photographer, and sadly It comes nowhere near the level of artistry, playfulness, sense of humor or focus on its subjects' personalities that one finds in the Humans of New York collections. Photography is mediocre at best. What a disappointment this book was.

Amazing and fun book for any fan of dogs and/or NYC. So many great photos of a wide array of dog breeds/mixes at diverse NYC locations. I love that there's also a little section at the end of the book called "Beyond the Boroughs" that features dogs on the sunny beaches of Fire Island. Can't wait to gift this book to all the dog-loving New Yorkers I know!

I purchased this as a gift for my 15 year old dog-loving granddaughter. She declared it a great success as a gift. She loves it. Beautiful photos of adorable dogs.

This book is awesome for those of us who love dogs, and whose pups have changed their lives forever. As is the case for us. We are also a bit biased as our Jessie is featured in the book. The author captured the essence of each and every pup. Makes for a great coffe table book. This Christmas will be easy, everyone in our circle is getting one. :)

Wonderful photographs of every breed of dog imaginable with backgrounds of New York from the areas where they live in a very high quality book for dog lovers and soon to be dog lovers!

I dont like to write reviews...who do i think i am is the feeling i have about it. But this book compels me to write and recommend reading. I read her words...words about her life that seemed almost puked onto the pages...words about trauma and rage and fear and a life lived and joys found inspite of all of it. No big happy ending or redemption story here, just raw honesty and brutal truths. It will be a book i read again. I believe you will too.

This book was exactly as I expected after watching Dr. Yuknavitch's TED talk on misfits, and was a very enjoyable read. I like how the chapters are quite short, which makes it easy for me to keep reading in bite-sized chunks. If you like personal memoirs of difficult and interesting lives, this will be right up your alley.

Incredible read! I have never read writing that is more beautiful, poetic, and profound. It is so rich, with words used in ways I have never seen or felt as deeply. This is a memoir that deals a lot with grief and sexual abuse. Sexual abuse that leads to severe overemphasis of the body. Lidia Yuknavitch's abuse at the hand of her father leads her down a path of extreme sexualization of her body. At times I did not know if I could read any further as the sex was so descriptive, so evocative, and massively out of control. Yet, I hung in there because this book simply would not let me go.At an early age Lidia's father throws her into an icy lake to teach her to swim. This begins her life as a swimmer and her deep connection to water. It is her early escape and influences her life forever. Her writing is steeped in connections to it. It is through water that she loses herself and later finds herself. It showed me how sexual abuse leaves one with no self, and the journey to find that self is treacherous. I simply cannot due this book justice with my review other than to say it affected me deeply, and the author has laid herself bare, a truly heroic act.

It's been a long time since a book moved me so much. Beautiful, deep, unapologetically revealing and open. Lidia says this book is "water she made a path through" and invites us to "come in" because "the water will hold you". And boy, does she deliver on that promise.

This book is...breathtaking. I submerged myself in Lidia's story and did not want to come up for air. Her use of language and the theme of water makes this book stand out as one of the best I have ever read.

It wasn't the type of book I would have cared to read but it was so well done! The story of her life kept unfolding without the gory details of her horrible father. Perseverance, dogged determination, a strong woman. Bravo! A beautifully written memoir.

Stunning. Raw. The way she owns her story is inspiring. I just finished and already I want to go back and read it again. To soak it up. And then pull out my journal and start writing my own story. Only I'm not sure that I have the courage to put it all out there and own it, as she does. If ever I have the chance to meet Lidia Yuknavitch and take a writing workshop from her, oh dear goddess, I would be thrilled and honored beyond measure. Just reading her words makes me want to do whatever I can to find the whole writer/person within me.

I bought this book because it was highly recommended. I had no idea that raw, angry, hurt, memories could be written so beautifully.

Niccolò di Bernardo dei Machiavelli (3 May 1469 – 21 June 1527) was an Italian diplomat, politician, historian, philosopher, humanist, and writer of the Renaissance period. He has often been called the father of modern political science. He was for many years a senior official in the Florentine Republic, with responsibilities in diplomatic and military affairs. He also wrote comedies, carnival songs, and poetry. His personal correspondence is renowned in the Italian language. He was secretary to the Second Chancery of the Republic of Florence from 1498 to 1512, when the Medici were out of power. He wrote his most renowned work The Prince (Il Principe) in 1513. "Machiavellianism" is a widely used negative term to characterize unscrupulous politicians of the sort Machiavelli described most famously in The Prince. Machiavelli described immoral behavior, such as dishonesty and killing innocents, as being normal and effective in politics. He even seemed to endorse it in some situations. The book itself gained notoriety when some readers claimed that the author was teaching evil, and providing "evil recommendations to tyrants to help them maintain their power". The term "Machiavellian" is often associated with political deceit, deviousness, and realpolitik. On the other hand, many commentators, such as Baruch Spinoza, Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Denis Diderot, have argued that Machiavelli was actually a republican, even when writing The Prince, and his writings were an inspiration to Enlightenment proponents of modern democratic political philosophy. A great read. Lots of lessons here. One will need to expand from here on out. Aim for the three volumed "Machiavelli: The Chief Works and Others" edited and translated by Albert Gilbert and "Diplomatic Missions (1498-1527)."

I am not a fan of doing research on the Kindle. Don't get me wrong - I love my Kindle - but it is not a great tool for serious research. It is just too slow and too cumbersome to use, and the small screen is a significant limitation to the process.That said, when I started using Kindle for PC I discovered for myself the potential utility of all the free Kindle books on offer. The search function, which is of such limited use on the Kindle, is AWESOME on Kindle for PC! I was able to search the works of Machiavelli, More, Erasmus, and other early modern authors in seconds for key terms which allowed me to find passages relevant to most recent project in seconds.Before making this discovery - one which I am sure many have made before me - I wouldn't have rated this particular Kindle version of The Prince any higher than a 2. On the Kindle, it's really only useful for reading from beginning to end. But on Kindle for PC it's just about as useful as any other edition I have, thanks to being able to look for and find things so quickly.Cheers!- Rodney

Further those quotations are old enough to frustrate online translation apps. The translation, such as it is, has rough spots that signal translation flaws.Of course, you get what you pay for--in this case nothing since it was a free download for Kindle. Other free downloads have been more useful with less effort.I think paying a few bucks for a better version is the way to go.

Not what I expected. Great textbook for a class on the subject. Not helpful for learning to read lips.

Great book with tons of activity ideas and education. There aren't a lot of speechreading resources out there and even though this one is older, its great!

I haven't delved into this book yet, but from the Index it looks like all I need is this and practice.All I did was google lip reading at Amazon and they were on their way. Thank you, Amazon.

This book is intended to help in Oral Transliteration. I read this text for an OT course several years ago, and I still find myself using some of the principles regularly. This book, I am sure, would help in any OT professional use or OT certification. I never had a chance to take that certification exam, but I bet it wouldn't hurt.I feel that it would help anyone who communicates with someone who is hard of hearing or deaf (who DOES NOT use any kind of signed language). It gives all kinds of tips about gestures and rephrasing, using key words. Say a friend is going deaf, and you notice they aren't understanding you as well as before, this book could help you. A member of my family has lost much of his hearing, and I use some of the tips in this book to help him understand me.There are tons of exercises in the back- but they require having a partner who can read (without voicing) the sentences, so you pick up on how to speechread them.I also have found myself out somewhere, speechreading people across the room. Speechreading is difficult and requires hours of practice. For so many people, this is how they get their information, by "reading lips". It amazing how much they have to concentrate and pay attention. The (deaf) man who taught my Speechreading course, read the lips of his professors for a bachelor and master's degree, without the help of a transliterator. Amazing! I have much respect for the speechreaders out there.

I can read the book on an Android device but not using the Kindle Cloud Reader on Mac/Linux...Bummer. I have a ton of other amazon ebooks that all work with the cloud reader--this is the first book that doesn't work. ;-(So far the book is good I am learning Verilog with it plus the 8bit website is pretty nifty. ;-)

If you want learn Verilog but are looking for something beyond the standard blink/button/7-segment FPGA projects, do yourself a favor and buy this book. Working through the implementations of early video games is both entertaining and educational. The book is well-written (barring a few typos) but the online Verilog editor and CRT emulator really bring the examples to life. It also lets you focus on the code and slow down the frame rate to see what’s going on instantly without having to worry about toolchain implementation details. Highly recommended.

Having had some experience with VHDL on physical FPGAs this looked like a fun way to get a little more familiar with Verilog. The info is shared without too much ceremony and should be quite easy to digest for someone that is new to the topic, the one thing to be aware of is that going from the simulated environment to physical hardware is a pretty big step and not really covered in any depth in this book, so while you will definitely get a feel for what it takes to do a digital design in HDL and get to play with the results there is a big step to get the next level, understanding constraint files, timing constraints, propagation delays etc. etc. But, this does not take a way from the book in anyway, it is a great intro to the topic and you even get to see what it would take to design a basic 8 and 16 bit CPU. I have many books on FPGA development and none are as presented with as much fun, I would say this book make the topic much less intimidating that others make it seem. I will definitely be getting the other books by this author.

This is from the guy who wrote the definitive book on Atari 2600 programming. While he doesn't go into enough detail on how to get a real FPGA board to output video, it is a great text that will help even the beginner to build their own gaming hardware. I didn't know any verilog before I started!

This book is very fun to read. It assumes you have some knowledge about digital logic, but the best part is that can be used with the simulator/emulator in author's Web site. Totally recommended if you like digital design, vidro games, programming and hardware. Thanks!

Retired theologians and philosophers John B. Cobb and David Ray Griffin (who has more recently become well-known for his views on 9/11: e.g., Debunking 9/11 Debunking) wrote in the Foreword to this 1976 book, "This book is an introductory exposition of the theological movement that has been strongly influenced by the philosophies of Alfred North Whitehead and Charles Hartshorne... Process theology speaks about God. Whitehead and Hartshorne have both used the word 'God' frequently and without embarrassment. However, they have been conscious that what they have meant by the term is philosophically and religiously opposed to much that has been meant by 'God' in metaphysical, theological, and popular notions... In the present book we have, besides explicating some of Whitehead's basic ideas, simply spelled out our own views. For this reason we have not called this 'an introduction to process theology' but 'an introductory exposition.'" (Pg. 7-8, 10)They point out, "Whitehead's analysis of basic features of reality has religious implications congenial to Christian faith." (Pg. 30) They add, "We have faith in the continued fruitfulness of returning to the first accounts of and reactions to Jesus' life for new insights because of the repeated fruitfulness on this return in the past... The present book is based upon the conviction that a return to Jesus for inspiration is still fruitful." (Pg. 40)They note, "Process theology sees God's fundamental aim to be the promotion of the creatures' own enjoyment. God's creative influence upon them is loving, because it aims at promoting that which the creatures experience as intrinsically good. Since God is not in complete control, the divine love is not contradicted by the great amount of intrinsic evil, or 'disenjoyment,' in the world. The creatures in part create both themselves and their successors." (Pg. 56)They assert, "Process theology also says that God is responsible for evil but not indictable for it... it does not deny that there is genuine evil... there are events that would have been better otherwise, all things considered... other events could have occurred then and there that would have been better. This is one of those universal convictions to which any philosophy or theology must be adequate if it is to be acceptable. Process theology distinguishes between divine responsibility and blameworthiness ... [because] the power of God is persuasive, not controlling. Finite actualities can fail to conform to the divine aims for them... evil is not necessary. But the possibility for the deviation is necessary; hence the possibility of evil is necessary." (Pg. 69)They continue, "God did not bring about creatures such as us ... simply because freedom is in itself a great value, but because beings capable of the values we enjoy must necessarily have these other capacities. The question as to why God did not make sinless robots does not arise. God is partly responsible for what we normally call evil... Had God not led the realm of finitude out of chaos into a cosmos that includes life, nothing worthy of the term 'suffering' would occur... God is responsible for these evils in the sense of having encouraged the world in the direction that made these evils possible... Hence, the question... reduces to the question as to whether the positive values enjoyed by the higher forms of actuality are worth the risk of the negative values, the sufferings. (Pg. 74-75)They argue, "Process theism... cannot provide the assurance that God's will is always done. It does affirm that, no matter how great the evil in the world, God acts persuasively upon the wreckage to bring from it whatever good is possible...God does not act ex machina to prevent the consequences of destructive human acts. Critics object that a being not able to guarantee a favorable outcome to the process does not have the sort of power that is essential to deity... The future is open and we are free because of god. The power to open the future and give us freedom is a greater power than the supposed power of absolute control, for a power effective over free beings is a far greater power than what would be involved in the manipulation of robots." (Pg. 118-119)This book---while, under its own terms, is not an "introduction" to process theology, exactly---is nevertheless a very helpful resource for anyone wanting to know more about this complex theology and philosophy.

A clear exposition from two of the legends in the field. I assigned it for my Philosophy of Religion class, and they were very enthusiastic. In this area, few students are ever exposed to alternative theological perspectives, and it enabled me to challenge their assumptions about God. The book is extremely challenging for an undergraduate class, so I lectured extensively while they were reading, but the book really made an impression.

This presentation is good, but highly academic. Example: I am a graduate student pursuing a PhD in psychology, in addition to being a long-time, well-read digester of theology and philosophy, and I had a lot of trouble reading this. Not because the concepts themselves are vacuous or unintelligible, but simply because this is written for serious philosophy students who have quite a background in the language being utilized here. It assumes quite a bit of foreknowledge (no pun intended). If you're desiring your first book on process theology, as I was, this is not the one to buy.A second and important note about this work is simply that it is old. That factor alone does not reduce value, but in this case, much new and important work has been done in the area of process philosophy and its interpretation since this publication. Another good reason to look elsewhere.A reader might want to look into a work by theologian Gregory Boyd, who has been a contemporary interpreter of Hartshorne. Boyd's Princeton dissertation on Hartshorne and process in general has been turned into a book (of sorts) called "Trinity and Process" which I am now reading and finding to be a good read. It can found through interlibrary loan or on Amazon.

I'm really, really interested in process theology, which is the only reason why I am persisting in reading this book. It is the most densely-written exposition I can imagine; every word counts and every sentence is difficult. I do believe that trained philosophers could understand it; I am struggling. The whole subject must somehow be made more accessible.

Great book

This was one of the first comprehensive overview of process theology, grounded in the philosophical/mathematical work of Whitehead. It is still a fine introduction to the field and should be required reading for anyone wishing to follow the development of process thought. This underlies the phenomenon of de-construction as well as the evolutionary vision of the Cosmos and of all of us who are its children. This book avoids the jargon that often masks confusion. It is clear and concise.

Life-changing book. Their world view fits my world experience in a transforming way. I had read it years ago and loaned my copy and found I need to have it for frequent review. I get something new each time.
