Very Helpful if you're about to take this test. It's going to be harder than you think. My husband took it twice. Used this book before the second time. It helped.

Barron's MAT: Miller Analogies Test seems to me a Good book, although I have not completed it yet. It came as stated as was. The shipment was delivered on time.

Good quality product. No problems at all with the actual product. Delivery was pretty slow, even when I ordered prime.

I just finished taking the MAT after preparing with this book as my main guide for 2 weeks. This book definitely helped me learn some terms I was not familiar with and brush up on some faint knowledge of certain subject areas. I can say it definitely helped me get at least 4 more questions right than I would have before studying, however, those four points may not make much of a different depending on where your score falls naturally.Unfortunately I was unable to take a paper version of the actual test, and part of me wishes that all study guides came with computerized versions of the test that buyers could take online. The experience of taking the test via computer versus paper feels and behaves quite differently. The practice tests in almost all the study guides I found had a nice readable sized font, but when I took the test on the computer, the font was maybe 8pt high?! It was much smaller than I was used to reading from the practice tests. Also, in the practice tests in this book, all of the regular terms are in full caps, but on the actual computer test, the regular terms only had the first letter capitalized and the question options were only capitalized if they were proper nouns, which was different from the guide. Not that it makes a huge difference, but it does infer additional information about the question options when the capitalization matters.I found the actual test to be MUCH harder than the practice tests- even outside of all the reasons already mentioned. The test did NOT seem to follow the idea that easy questions were first and harder questions were last. I realize people have different knowledge bases, but because I was expecting easy questions up front, I spent more time up front trying to figure out why things seemed more difficult to me and ended up finding much easier questions near the end of the test. In all of the practice tests I had taken in the book, I never, ever, ran out of time- and I always timed myself while taking practice tests. For this reason, I didn't pay as much attention to the clock count-down on the screen as I normally would have until I was over half-way through and realizing that I was much further behind than I needed to be. Ultimately I ran short of time on the actual test and near the end just gave random answers in order to have something scored before time was up. This upset me greatly- because it was not a difficulty that I had anticipated based on finishing the 10 practice tests in this book with an average of 5 minutes remaining each time. The practice tests don't give you an estimate of what your scaled score would be, so it's hard to compare to the results you get from practicing to how you do on the actual test. Since scaled scores and raw scores are not a 1:1 relationship because they are based on the difficulty of the tests, I understand why it's not possible to provide a raw score to percentile or scaled score estimate, but it would be nice if there were some clarity in this department- not just from Barrons, but from ALL study guide sources including Pearson's official MAT site.The vocabulary guides are helpful, but I think the Kaplan version of this study guide may provide better organization for the vocabulary studying. The tips for analyzing analogies in this guide were about equal to that of the MAT guide provided for free online. If I could spend my money differently all over again, I might have spent it on an online practice test from the MAT site and checked out a study guide from the library instead of buying this guide. There are some blatant errors in this book, but they don't affect your scoring or learning if you're paying attention.Overall- I did score better than I would have because some of the questions on the test were directly related to questions in the practice tests, however, I do believe there are better guides and ways of improving your score.

There are some editorial errors in this test prep that need to be addressed. I can't disagree with the other reviewer on that point.I would, however, highly recommend this test prep book. I took the pretest and calculated the percentage of correct answers once I finished. After reading chapters 2, 3, and 5 I took several more practice tests and averaged 13 percentage points higher than the pretest. The helps are invaluable. I needed to score at least a 419 on the real MAT and scored significantly higher than that. I attribute a lot of that success to this prep book and would recommend it to anyone.

This book is filled with errors not minor errors either but significant ones that derail any progress you might have made. In all of the sample tests, there are two sets of answers, one set simply lists the answers and the other set gives a full explanation. Needless to say, the two sets should give the same answer. Well, not so. On one of the tests, the answers given in one set do not match those given in the second set. It just so happens that the first set gives the wrong answers to the questions on the test. On many questions throughout the book, the answer choices are mislabeled so there might be two Cs or two Bs. There is hardly a page that does not have an error of some sort, usually a major error. I have worked through the 9th edition and it does not suffer from these problems. I would, therefore, buy that edition until a newly edited version of the 10th edition comes out.

I love Patricia Polacco. Her illustrations are beautiful and held my interest as a child like no other.Now that all my friends are starting to have children, I'm hoping to gift each child with a Polacco book.Babushka Baba Yaga is my favorite because of the important lessons. Never judge people by how they look or the gossip that's going around town. It's an excellent story for children to remind them to keep an open mind, and not judge a book by its cover. It also stresses empathy--that's a big one. :)

A wonderful way to show that do not judge a book by its cover. This needs to be read by all kids with older relatives especially and all adult enamore with avarice and acquiring things. Wonderful values taught in this "children's story" that all adults should learn!

My kids loved this book so much that they checked it out from the library over and over again. We decided to get it because they still love reading it even though they're getting older. It's a great story about accepting others who are different and about judging others based on who they really are, not how they look or what you have heard about them.

Phil Gaimon can ride much better than me, write much better than me, and eat cookies much better than me. I really want to hate his books, but the problem is they're entertaining as all hell and once I start one I just can't put it down.Even a non cyclist would possibly enjoy this. Actually no. Non cyclists only enjoy getting fat and occasionally running us over.

Phil is obviously a very talented writer, couching in hilarious humor, excellent insights he gathered in the professional ranks! Instead of going awash in deep technicality or grandios physiology, Phil relates easily in layman's language . No bitterness, here, even if there is, it's couched in humor. I wish it were twice it's length because you won't want to put it down; and just like a great race, it will all be over too soon!!

Should or shouldn't I buy yet another bike book, and at a relatively high price at that...? Well, I finally did, and no regrets whatsoever. Written with lots of wit and 'dry' humor, but also with a lot of useful tips, this book is delightful to read, and has become one of my favorites on my "Kindle shelf" :-)

Phil Gaimon's responses to reader questions are hilarious, and the book served to remind me how much I enjoyed Pro Cycling on $10 a day. Ask a Pro was a very quick read, but worth buying because I didn't read many of the articles when they were in print. The individual responses were so short, it was easy to read a couple while in line, waiting for kids, etc. Reading Phil's perspective makes me realize how lucky I am (most of the time) to be an amateur who rides and races solely for fun. Looking forward to his next book in October.

Just about any quirky, little thing you wanted to know about pro cycling is in this book. A great read, no. A fun read on the toilet or for your commute to work? Yes!!!! I'd call this book a supplement but Phil has a way of making $$ and I read his $10 a day book which I enjoyed. I think he's making more than $10 a day now. Way to go!!!

This is very entertaining! I found myself LOL'ing quite a bit, although there were times he either didn't give a real answer or I couldn't tell if he was kidding or not. Will purchase some of his other books now too.

Very similar to his other book. I enjoyed it and read it in under a week so it kept me coming back. I like his sarcasm which reminds us to not take cycling too serious unless you are a pro.

Nothing new. But still fun to read. Phil may not have won a Tour, but he would be my first choice of a rider to buy a beer

I am very close to finishing “Autumn In The Heavenly Kingdom” by Stephen R. Platt – its been a longer journey than I’d expected – a good but slow read which I should be able to post on this weekend. Still, this one arrived on Wednesday and it had to be read.I’ll start by saying that I’ve read and reviewed the first two books in the series – starting with “All Systems Red”. It’s a book I enjoyed but wasn’t as enthusiastic about as most of those who’ve read it. I've also read and reviewed “Artificial Condition”. I actually thought this was the better of the two and it left me optimistic about the direction in which the story was heading.Then comes this one and I’m left shaking my head a bit. I’m going to start with this post where I ended my review of “Artificial Condition”:--------------------------------------------------“I honestly have only one complaint and it has nothing to do with the book itself. I don’t like the way Martha Wells and the publisher are commercializing the work – hence the Razor / Blades quote. The story is being sold as 4 separate novellas:All Systems Red – 2017Artificial Condition – May 2018Rogue Protocol – August 2018Exit Strategy – October 2018They’re sold separately as hardcovers at the price of $16.19 and as e-copies for $9.99. In reality, these are 4 sections of one book – obvious as you read through each separately – and could easily have been published in one volume. The fact that they were all released within an 18 month period only confirms that the Author and the publisher made a pretty crass commercial decision to break the book into four pieces and sell them separately to maximize revenue.Instead of paying $25 for a single hardcover volume, I’m forced to purchase 4 separate novellas for a combined cost of ~$68.00 in hardcover or ~$40.00 in digital format. Before you say it, I will – shame on me – no one forced me to spend the money – I know I’m being played. Nevertheless, I’m really enjoying the books and I want to get my hands on them as they become available. It just leaves a bitter taste in my mouth and it makes me wonder about Wells’ attitude towards her fans and readers. Wells and her publisher gave me the Razor but she’s selling me the blades – one at a time – at a pretty high price.”--------------------------------------------------The further I progress into the series, the more this frustrates me. This volume picks up immediately upon the end of “Artificial Condition” – almost seamlessly. It’s obvious that Martha Wells wrote this as a single volume and it should have been published as such. I do feel exploited and a bit betrayed – not by the publisher – I understand and accept their business decision – but by the Author who could have forced a decision more in keeping with the interests of her readers. There – I’m done – last time I’ll say it – until the 4th book is released.If that were the only thing, we’d be fine. It was an entertaining story and we get more of the same Murderbot that so many people seem to have fallen in love with. Martha Wells serves up another type of Bot to serve as both ally and foil for Murderbot. It’s a quick, easy, enjoyable read. Even with all that, I can’t escape the feeling that something’s going a bit wrong with the story – and I think the problem – at least for me – is Murderbot.In each Novella, Murderbot grows and his personality develops. He defines himself through contact and cooperation with both new groups of humans, new types of Bots and new Machine Intelligences. Murderbot really started to grow on me in “Artificial Condition”. I enjoyed watching him rationalize his actions and I appreciated the way he connected with and related to both his human and machine acquaintances. To be honest, I found him to be a little annoying in this book. The personality traits he manifested made him feel to me like an odd combination of a grumpy old man and a spoiled teen. I’m sure many – likely most – will find this to be intriguing and lovable. It didn’t work as well for me.I had a second, more wonkish problem and it’s one that’s been creeping up on me across all three novellas. Murderbot doesn’t define very well for me as an entity. There are many different categories of personhood in the book – humans, augmented humans, machine / human hybrids (like Murderbot), true bots (Miki and the Combat Bots) and artificial intelligences like ART from “Artificial Condition. I’m struggling to find a rationale for the creation of an entity like Murderbot. I continue to ask myself what the advantages of a hybrid entity like Murderbot actually are – incorporating biological vulnerabilities – particularly after the acknowledgement in “Rogue Protocol” that there are also Sec Bots that are even more formidable than Combat Bots. Bots like Miki seem to have to capability to relate to and connect with humans. Combat Bots and Sec Bots seem to be far more formidable combatants than Murderbot. The only thing that really seems to separate Murderbot from augmented humans is the governor module that Murderbot has managed to hack. I just don’t see how he fits in the larger scheme of things – what unique quality a SecUnit like Murderbot with a functioning governor module brings to the table. There has to be a functional rationale for creation of an entity as complex and obviously expensive as Murderbot and I just don’t see it.I know this won’t bother most but it stands out as a non-sequitur for me. It doesn’t keep me from enjoying the stories – I have. It just keeps me from enjoying them to the same degree as other readers seem to – like an annoying itch that can’t be scratched.Overall, this is a fun book and I suspect most will see it as a great addition to the story. I’d recommend it to anyone who’s enjoyed “All Systems Red” and “Artificial Condition”. I’m certainly going to buy and read the final installment – “Exit Strategy”. I guess all this means is that the series is not going to make it to my top shelf and I don’t know how much staying power it’s ultimately going to have.

I really like the stories. But I won't be getting the next one. $10 for what is essentially a short story is just plain greed.All Systems Red was fantastic and priced appropriately. When I bought Artificial Condition I didn't mind paying $10 because I thought it was a novel. Rogue Protocol was more of the same and when I finished it I felt I'd been ripped off rather than entertained. So I'm done.None of my future purchases will be from Macmillan, and we'll wait and see about Martha Wells.

Martha Well's Murderbot series follows the adventures of an intelligent/sentient security robot as it sheds its governor module and finds freedom. Learning to make its own decisions and dealing with the feelings/mishaps that arise are what make this such a charming series. She/he/it refers to itself as Murderbot and as she/he/it ventures into the uncharted waters of personal discovery finds that she/he/its directive to protect humans is not so easy to leave behind and many challenges follow. In Rogue Protocol,the third in the series, Murderbot continues hopping space ships wherever she/he/it is going by making friends with their A.I. control units usually by offering to share she/he/its huge digital collection of cheesy TV series, especially space operas. Binge viewing seems rampant among A.I.'s of the future and allows Murderbot to pretty much travel the reaches of humanity free of charge. This has hit the status of a running joke in the series. Just like most TV shows each Murderbot entry is largely self contained and having read the preceding installments is not necessary. This episode Murderbot makes it out to a remote system in the back of beyond on the other side of the Corporate Rim where civilization is thin and new planets are available for mega corps to plunder. Murderbot's mission continues to be searching for evidence against the company that betrayed she/he/it in book one,All Systems Red. Customs by the denizens of humanity's further reaches challenges and then charms our erstwhile hero as Murderbot finds more innocents to save and is quickly in over she/he/its head. My personal favorite of the series so far.P.S.One caveat-the pricing of the Murderbot novellas is predatory and leaves me feeling violated, if they were not such good reads I would be out of here in a flash. This is the stirring biography of George Attla, the little-known Athabascan Indian from the tiny Koyukuk River village of Huslia, who limped to the starting line in the 1958 Fur Rendezvous World Championship sled dog race in Anchorage. George is my new hero!!! What a story. Having been a pioneer in my profession of personal historian I can really relate to what George went through becoming a full time dog sled racer! I'm sure there were a lot of nay-sayers that he gave a deaf ear. I admire him in so many ways. I'm so glad this book was written and the movie was made about his life. I have a copy of the original movie and so appreciate what they did to share his story! Thank you, thank you. The world needs to know more about these heroes who are one with the country!!!

Interesting story about an interesting character. Before reading this book, I had a self limiting belief that I could never race sled dogs because of a bum knee. After learning that George also had a bad knee, and still accomplished all that he did, I feel differently now. Very inspiring to me.

Attla was an amazing man who will always be remembered as a mushing legend. The movie based on this book is available through the Fur Rondy website. If you are a fan of the sport or have an interest in Alaska, you will find the 1970's film to be worth owning.

George Attla was no more than a name to me before I picked up SPIRIT IN THE WIND: THE STORY OF GEORGE ATTLA. The cover said he was Alaska's legendary sled dog sprint champ. Whuh? I scoffed, thinking "legendary" was a word that is overused nowadays and should be reserved for people like Helen of Troy or George Washington. However, one quick peek through the contents of this book made me think that for once, Lew Freedman is not overstating things, for George Attla has indeed all the attributes of a legendary figure. Did you ever read Joseph Campbell's HERO OF A THOUSAND FACES? That will come to mind when you sit down with a hot cup of cocoa and a copy of SPIRIT OF THE WIND. For Attla is to ordinary mushers what Margot Fonteyn is to ballerinas--the gold standard to which all others have to kneel down.He is good with dogs, and Freedman spends a lot of time detailing the extraordinary bonds set up by a trainer like Attla with some very special beasts. Freedman ascribes some of his magic to his First Peoples ancestry, for he is an Alaskan Indian with a kind of "horse whispering" background and a crippling childhood disease, one that would bring tears to your eyes, and when he conquers it the Northern Lights seem to glow a little brighter. You'll be wiping away the tears with a chamois.He has achieved too many feats to mention, and nine gold medals. When he left school, it was with a first grade education--no, I guess he made it into second grade. At the end of our lives when we approach the Pearly Gates, St Peter will ask us what we did for other people while we were alive, and George Attla will shake his noble head and say, "I did it for the dogs."

This biography on George Attla proves to be interesting and well written. The book tells the story of this great Alaskan musher in an easy to read and entertaining prose.However, as information goes, the book suffered because while the author tells us so much about Attla's accomplishments, the book doesn't go into the man itself. Its a very friendly biography written by the author who does his best not to paint any negative aspects of George Attla. A good example would the short time Mr. Attla spent in jail up in Fairbanks for reason Mr. Freedman should have known but did not go into.Biography is a two edge sword. If you are going to write about a man, his greatness and his flaws must be presented. So far, the author seem to be high with praises only. How will we supposed to know who George Attla is without his weaknesses as well. Because of this, I can only considered this book as "half biography" of George Attla, entertaining reading but pretty lightweight material.
