Destined for an Early Grave was not what I was expecting at all. And that's in a bad way. I put it off for three years after being spoiled by a major event, but while reading, knowing that it was coming didn't even bother me because everything else that was happening was so ridiculous. When it starts we find Cat and Bones trying to have a relaxing vacation. Unfortunately, Cat is having some strange dreams, which are more than just dreams. Soon they find themselves in Paris where another vampire known as the Dreamsnatcher is hoping to get his hands on Cat.I am just very disappointed in Destined for an Early Grave. It honestly reads like random filler. It doesn't fit the tone of the series thus far at all. Gregor is such a dull villain, and he comes out of nowhere! Suddenly there's this vampire with the very powerful talent to pull people out of their dreams and he just wants to have Cat as his bride. Um, okay? Of course there has to be a prophecy surrounding Cat which makes her that much more appealing, but seriously, this guy just wants her because.I don't feel like Destined for an Early Grave moves the series plot along at all. It was like some detour where one person wants to see some obscure landmark that no one cares about, and then you get lost on the way back to the main road, drive in a circle, and end up right where you started. There was no point to any of this at all. The only important event was that thing I was spoiled on which happens toward the end. That will actually have ramifications for the rest of the series. That whole mess with Gregor....will not. I'm going to pretend that it never happened.

Okay here it goes....I started off REALLY loving this series. It was the first time in a very long time that I was really excited to find a book that I was totally captivated by. But after a while, there are so many unbelievable dynamics that develop that I can't keep overlooking them. After the last few books, I was actually excited to see Frost taking a risk by introducing a character like Gregor and the dynamic that she was introducing. I felt like this was going to be the turning point that made things exciting again, but at the end when it came down to it, I felt like she backtracked. Cat is by far the best character in this series and it's like Frost just wanted to make her a love sick puppy who throws out her better judgement. Cat is a headstrong hero, she doesn't take nonsense from anyone. So when she refused to stand up for herself especially during one pivotal moment, I just couldn't justify any of her characters actions anymore. There were so many opportunities for the characters to communicate, but it seemed that the perpetual misconceptions and intentional disregard for one another just served as a plot device to get the characters where Frost wanted them to be. So for a series that started off strong, I have to say that I am extremely disappointed with where it ended up.

WOW, that's what I can say about this book. If u haven't read the other 5 books first before this one then u will not understand what I'm going to say and for those who have then u will. I had to stop off and on during the first part of the book because I was very upset what was happening and what I thought would happen, then it happened in the middle and I was heartbroken, mad and very upset about it. I could not put the book down, I was obsessed, because I wanted and hoped that what I was thinking was going to be wrong, but I didn't know and had to find out. And in the end I was so relieved that my heart was not broken anymore. I tell u Jeaniene Frost, u had me in a rage in this book, so heartbroken and it was in such suspense that I could not stop reading. Very good book and I hope the other ones does not do this to me again.....

What just happened? Books one through three were all solid five star books for me. But this one was almost intolerable...I'm not going to spoil the story for everyone else but suffice it to say that I cringed through more than 50% of this book. Bones and Cat were constantly at each other's throats. Sorry - but that's not romantic - or enjoyable. Bones was almost not even recognizable in this book. And Cat took annoying, stubborn and stupid to new levels. When Bones cussed her out about 3/4 of the way through I wanted to give him a high five.For my part, I would have enjoyed this book a lot more if (1) it had been edited down for all the scenes that really did nothing to move the story along or seemed overly dramatic / unnecessary and (2) Bones and Cat had worked more together than against each other.It seems to me that this book could have achieved its main objectives (not going to spoil it - you'll know what they are when it's done) without all the antagonism between Bones and Cat. Really - it killed the romance - left me feeling blah about these two. That's so sad, because I adored these two together in the first three books. Their actions seemed way too out of character.All I can is that I'm glad it's over and I can move on to the next one in the hopes that Bones and Cat work together again and not against each other.

Listen, I'm only 11 when I read this book, and I must say that I didn't get board at all throughout the story! It was action packed and took very very unexpected twists, all while educating you on the revolution. It's one of those books where you read something, close the book, and think. Just think. Then you might go over to the sink and get a glass of water or something. Then you think some more. Then you continue reading. We've all had those times. Ive had them particularly a lot. This is one of those books where it requires you to do so. Avi is an amazing author, I just hope he writes more of these types of stories. Very intriguing.

Doesn't that gorgeous cover by Edel Rodriguez make you long to read this? It's the perfect cover for this story. (I have a "thing" for silhouettes on book covers. I don't know why, but I feel compelled to buy a book with silhouettes on the cover.)If you have never read one of Avi's books, you really need to. He writes intelligent historical fiction for young people. He never dumbs down his books, and obviously works hard to be historically accurate.In this complex, smart story Avi again tackles an aspect of the American Revolution. He did it once before in "The Fighting Ground", where the reader is swept along in thirteen-year-old Jonathon's passion to be part of the fighting, and then his rude awakening to the realities of being a soldier. But this story isn't just a feminine version of "The Fighting Ground". It's a completely different aspect of the war, written in a different kind of narrative. The story is broken up into two different time frames. Roughly the first half takes place in 1776 when Sophia Calderwood is twelve years old. Sophia and her parents fled their home in New York City when the British invaded. Sophia's adored older brother William joined the American troops fighting to keep the British out of the city. As the book opens in September of 1776, Sophia and her mother are returning on foot to New York to try to reclaim what they can of their lives. (For safety, Mr. Calderwood must return in secret later.) In an apple orchard on the outskirts of New York, they witness a young man of "dignified bearing" being led by British soldiers to a rope hanging from an apple tree, and Sophia watches in horror as the ladder is kicked away and the young man (who she later learns was Nathan Hale) is hanged.Still reeling from that shock, they return to their home to find it looted of all their most costly possessions. As they begin the clean-up process, a small troop of British soldiers appears on their doorstep, looking for Mr. Calderwood and informing them they will be required to billet a British Officer. What follows is a tense time of eking out a living while boarding a British officer and pretending to be Loyalists. Sophia develops a reluctant crush on John Andre (oh curse Blogger's lack of language accents!) the British officer boarding in their home, even as she firmly believes in the American cause. When she learns that her brother is a prisoner of the British and housed under appalling conditions, she pleads with Andre to help. What happens next firmly sets her on the course for later events.The second half of the book takes place three years later, in 1780, when Sophia is fifteen years old. Through her work with her father's publisher friend, she meets a man who recruits her as a spy in the household of General Sir Henry Clinton. As a housemaid, she would have access to information vital to the war effort. She stumbles on to what appears to be a clandestine operation possibly involving the collaboration of the British and an American of high military rank, a man Sophia and other Americans idolized, a man who played a huge part in early American victories against the British. The implications are so shocking and suddenly Sophia is alone in her quest to bring this information to light.In the author's note at the end of the book, Avi writes that the two story threads based on historical facts "are as historically accurate as I could write them." He goes on to say that "Sophia is as true an individual as I could hope to create, and her actions provide an explanation as to what really happened in 1780."And can I tell you how much I appreciated his striving for historical accuracy, even down to the language used. So often you read historical fiction, and get jerked out of the story by an author's use of modern words and terminology. In fact, there is a very helpful glossary in the back of the book to look up those unfamiliar words you come across. (A couple of years ago I read a Middle Grade novel by an author who shall remain nameless, about the Civil War era and the main character talks about being "gaga" for a certain boy! Yes, that word was actually used. Having already overlooked other words that were very obviously not historically accurate, I threw the book down in disgust and never went back to it. So I really appreciated Avi's obviously meticulous research on this book.)Sophia provides the modern reader with an emotional barometer of the life of an average citizen during that time of conflict in American history. Avi shows Sophia's -I think natural- human conflictions that come with living in a war-torn country: how morals and actions change or become ambiguous based on circumstances.Sophia, as a narrator, is very Self conscious: she narrates her story as someone aware of her audience and how they may be judging her. Her narrative never loses that awareness. There is a "buttoned up" quality to it: like she is recalling this period of time and reacting almost unwillingly to remembered emotions, and doesn't want to come across as too emotional. She tries her best to be fair and balanced in her narrative, not defending her actions and emotions so much as explaining them. And yet, despite the distancing approach to the narrative, the reader is quickly caught up in her experiences.Book published in September 2012 by Beach Lane Books.I nominated this book for the CYBILS 2012 in the Middle Grade Fiction category.

This historical fiction is pretty interesting. If that's your genre, then I would definitely recommend this book. The events in this book are extraordinary. I don't want to ruin it for anyone. Just know if you're into historical fiction, this is a buy you won't regret. (:

12 year old daughter loves this book! We are studying the American Revolution right now, and this has been a fun, easy read for her to support her studies. It is so important for our girls to understand that there were strong women involved in the war effort. Even though this is a work of fiction, it offers insight into what life would have been like for a young woman during this time period.

This book was amazing. It is suspenseful and a page turner. I think I finished it in a day. I read it to add to my classroom library and the kids LOVE it. It is checked out often. I just wish the cover weren't so girly because it is not just a novel for girls. It is about Sophia who becomes a spy during the Revolutionary War. This is a great book that you won't be able to put down. It is a clean read, the only thing to consider is that a traitor is hung and that is during war, so there is some violence.

I just finished reading this with my 5th and 3rd grader. We are learning about the American Revolution this year, and this has been a perfect companion to that. It tells the tale of Sophia, who becomes a spy in order to bring justice for the death of her brother. My girls loved hearing names from our history books in the story.

Really enjoyed the book. Reviewed it in our bookclub. Good remarks all around. A retired teacher said it should be used in American History as it was well researched, all the characters are real, except Sophia, and all the events were real. It's a quick read and is enjoyable. It makes the reader want to know more detail about the people and events that occurred.

I really appreciate how the author was able to place me in Sophia's shoes and take me back in time. The emotional tug of war and the sense of obligation, truly keep me reading. I'm hoping that my sin enjoys the book as much as I have.

While she was very active with the BPP, she joined a Communist Party youth group in high school and joined the CPUSA as an adult while she was still in graduate school. This autobiography, which she has said she did not want to write as she was too young, details not only her famous trial but also her development and awakening into the reality that capitalism has no future and the promise of communism to meet people's needs over profits. I've never seen this book on a required or suggested reading list for a Black Studies Program, but it must be. The role of radicals must be salvaged from history, and Davis' book makes its contribution to acknowledging the struggle

Great book! There were a lot of things I did not know about her. She has been through a lot, but survived it all.

Dr. Angela Davis hs lived an amazing life. She is an incredible speaker. To hear her story in her own words is worth the price of the book. I hope one day to meet her and get her to autograph the book.She is on the level of King, Jr. and Malcolm X when it comes to fighting for civil rights for ALL!!

Published when Davis was in her late 20s, this book carries the immediacy of recent events and the richness of detail needed to understand the writer's experiences of the times of which she writes. Her work with various activist groups uniquely placed her to tell this story, and her depth of perspective can't be surpassed because she lived it. This *is* the real deal.

My local library doesn’t carry Angela which is a shame. It reads like a novel. She is excellent with her story telling & words. I adore her. I was fortunate to meet her last year & she signed my copy of this very book.

Well, I was intrigued by the title, and the price was low enough, so I decided to splurge! The book is super basic when it comes to photography; a seasoned or pro shooter will get bored with a lot of this book. I was pleased by the sharing of apps and usage. there are thousands of iPhone apps for post processing, sharing etc. I have been looking at the books and trying to weed through and find the apps that are the most commonly used.For an amateur, a teen, or others who have little to no experience with image making, this book will do a great job of getting you started. Repleat with great images, Hollimgsworth shares some great moments, as well as some supurb techniques. However, if you have ever shot with a DSL or quality Rangefinder, this will probably be a good book for a few ideas, and some nice pics to look at. But, I always tell people - even if it is simplistic - if you get one idea or new technique - or if the bloody book just makes you THINK - thin it's worth it!

If you are looking for a book that will explain some of the technical aspects of the iPhone ------ this is not the book for you. You will have to figure out on your own how to get from point A to point B, when trying to take some of those spectacular shots. A very basic (small) book for absolute beginners.

If you are just starting out, this is a good basic guide from an excellent photographer and educator. Jack is a huge supporter of the photographer community and he deserves your support.

I was expecting much more emphasis on using various apps for post-processing, rather than general photo advice.

Nice read for my daughter who is interested in photography... provides some unique insight and ideas!

For the past 14 years an extremely close friend of mine has had many unexplainable symptoms (lack of smell, muscle cramping, choking, extreme abdominal pain with nausea after eating fiber or fat-rich foods, etc.) This November 2015 I noticed a resting tremor in the arm on his left side. This was the first time I suspected his issues were related to one disease which might be Parkinson's Disease (PD). However, I still dismissed this possibility because tremors can be related to other medical issues (one of which is benign) and he has only had this tremor three times. Periodically over the past several months I noticed him walking slower, a frozen facial expression, and his right hand curled in front of him as if he had a stroke. On Dec 5, 2015 he really exhibited the slow walking, frozen face, and curled hand and he took forever to dress that morning. Later that evening I became certain (in my opinion) that he has PD due to his telling me about a change in his handwriting which I did not witness. Unfortunately, he refuses to go to the doctor or seek medical help from a neurologist even when I told him I believe he has PD. On extremely rare occasions he'll go to see a particular specialist for whatever ailment is almost killing him at the moment. As a result, since December 2015 I've completely immersed myself in learning about PD with some cursory investigation of illnesses that exhibit Parkinson-like symptoms because I wanted to be sure I was on the right track.Besides searching the Internet for information, I purchased seven (7) books on Parkinson's Disease (PD) of which this book is one. My review is written from the perspective of someone who does not have PD but wants to learn about what the signs of PD are, what a person's life will be like, what are their challenges, what they should do about it, what is their life expectancy, etc. This book is in the list below. I've listed the books in the order of value to me and not in the order that I read them. I also put the copyright date of each book in parenthesis as well as my star ranking based on its usefulness to me and a short few sentences of what the book was about. If I had PD myself, I would rank them in a different order. I posted the same review to each one of these seven (7) books. At the end, I wrote a summary of what I think about PD and listed seven (7) other books I may one day buy and read.Parkinson's Disease For Dummies (c 2007) (4.5 stars) - Although this book does not have the latest developments or information on PD or Lewy Body disease (dementia included), it was invaluable in helping me understand what PD is in the most simplest terms. It helped me understand what to look for in a person with PD and what challenges they face. Since we are in 2016, the information on treatment is somewhat outdated. This book is great for someone who suspects they have PD or just got diagnosed because it clarifies symptoms in easy-to-understand language. It's a great resource for the newly diagnosed PD patient and those preparing for their first appointment. It also has information on Young Onset Parkinson's Disease (YOPD) and a chapter (sections of which I skipped over) full of exercises for the PD patient.What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About(TM): Parkinson's Disease: A Holistic Program for Optimal Wellness (c Feb 2003) (4 stars) - This is like a textbook on Parkinson's disease with case studies from actual patients and information on alternative therapies such as acupuncture. This book appears to outline all the symptoms of Parkinson’s, including ones not in other books such as Seborrheic dermatitis and stuttering (which is also in Wilson's disease). This book discusses everything from A-Z, like complementary medicine (homeopathy, acupuncture, etc.), issues for caregivers, etc. Case studies are interspersed throughout the text to give the reader a general idea of a PD person's experiences. It even mentions Mucuna pruriens which is a bean sold in supplement form and has high levels of levodopa that could be of help to PD patients--of course, only take this with supervision of your doctor.A Caregiver's Guide to Lewy Body Dementia (c 2011) (5 stars) - this broadened my horizons about PD because it described the symptoms related to two very similar diseases and was co-written by someone whose spouse had dementia with Lewy bodies. PD is a Lewy Body disease where abnormal proteins show up on the part of the brain that controls movement. However, it is closely associated with Lewy Body Dementia that has abnormal proteins on the cognition part of the brain. Both diseases have many of the same symptoms and depending on which symptoms appear first that determines what the disease is called. It is either dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) or Parkinson's Disease with Dementia (PDD). The diagnosis is critical because medications for one disease can have adverse effects on those with the other disease or on those with Alzheimer's. Some DLB patients are misdiagnosed with Alzheimer's and those medicines are contraindicated in most cases for them. It was this book that helped me realize the symptoms I was seeing was the same with my friend and also easily explained what a caregiver needs to do.Living Well with Parkinson's (second edition) (c 1991, 2005) (5 stars) - This book was originally written by a woman who had Parkinson's Disease but who died on November 25, 1998 from a heart attack unrelated to PD. It was revised in 2005. This book is phenomenal in my opinion because it supplied me with an excellent narrative of what it was like to live with Parkinson's and how to make that life worth living. The chapter on "Medications and Therapies" provides a list of diseases that can resemble PD. The chapter on "Is There Life With Parkinson's" is a positive narrative on how the author lived very well with the disease.Parkinson's Humor - Funny Stories about My Life with Parkinson's Disease (c2012) (4 stars) - is a lighthearted book written by someone who has PD. The book, although not very funny to me, educated me on what day-to-day life is like to live with PD. For instance, Beverly mentioned how sometimes she felt starched when describing the rigidity PD patients experienced. Except for Living Well with Parkinson's, this book was the only other uplifting book. All the others books were way too serious and sobering. At a time when I am new in trying to understand PD and PDD, reading a text like this or the one above was critical especially since I was overdosing on the subject. This book provided the mental break I needed, was slightly educational, and an extremely easy read.Parkinson's Disease: The Complete Guide for Patients and Caregivers (c 1993) (3 stars) - this book is similar to What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About(TM): Parkinson's Disease: A Holistic Program for Optimal Wellness but it's 10 years earlier so the information is dated. For example in one chapter on how to cope with Parkinson’s there's a suggestion to use a Dictaphone if you can't write. It has a short first section on symptoms of the disease and then goes into history, treatment, etc. There are three sections, however, that I found worthwhile. The Chapter on "The A to Z Guide to Symptoms and Side Effects," "Planning Your Financial Future," and "Diseases That May Resemble Parkinson's Disease" which is in the Appendix II are invaluable. One thing I did not like about this book is that it was very negative describing more than once about the disabling effects of PD and how you have get your affairs in order, etc. Except for the three worthwhile chapters, I feel I did not need to purchase this book to get the information I was looking for.Brain Storms: The Race to Unlock the Mysteries of Parkinson's Disease (c 2015) (4 stars) - the author is actually a PD patient and this book covers the most recent research on PD. It was not as helpful to me because it talked more about the latest developments in the search for a cure as well a brief glimpse at tests and drugs for PD patients. If I were a person with PD, then this book would probably be second in value in my list. For me, I could have done without purchasing this book.In summary, what I discovered is that a PD patient does not die from their disease and they can have a normal life expectancy. PD is a slowly progressive disease, that is not usually hereditary, and which affects each patient differently. Not all PD patients have visible tremors. The disease definitely changes the patient's life and the lives of those closest to them but it sometimes does this for the better because the patients re-evaluate their lives and how they want to spend their time. For many, the disease will be an inconvenience that the patients and caregivers can learn to live with. There are no tests that can definitely determine someone has PD while the person is alive. A definitive diagnosis can only be made with post-mortem brain analysis. PD is determined via a process of elimination of testing for other similar diseases, observing arm muscle reactions during a test a doctor may try, and observing how the symptoms respond to Carbidopa / Levodopa drugs. It is critical that patients seek help immediately and partner with a doctor (or several doctors such as physical therapists, speech therapists, etc.) to seek a diagnosis and develop a treatment plan. At the early stages of PD, no drug therapy may be involved; it might me more of a wait and see approach. The positive attitude of the patient along with eating right, exercising, partnering with a healthcare team, and having a good support network provides the best outcome for the patient to have a fruitful life with only some limitations and modifications.Please understand that no one book provided all the information I needed or wanted. I discovered information has to come from several sources, including the Internet and PD support groups. For instance, one PD symptom not mentioned in any of these books is gastroparesis. I found that one by searching the Internet with the word Parkinson's and abdominal cramping with nausea and the likes. I did these searches years ago, but at that time I did not suspect PD so Parkinson’s was not part of the search criteria. I do hope my friend will seek the help of a neurologist, detail all his symptoms, and let me tell the neurologist what I have been seeing. Could I be wrong about believing that my friend has PD. Absolutely, I could be wrong; even doctors misdiagnose patients. However, after reviewing Internet sources for the other diseases mentioned in these books, the only other diseases that come close with his symptoms are a brain tumor or Wilson's disease. However, with Wilson's disease his eye doctor would have noticed the copper ring (known as Kayser-Fleischer Ring) around his cornea during his eye exam.Although I am on PD overload, below are seven (7) other books (not listed in any particular order) that I might purchase in the future to learn more. I downloaded this book yesterday on my Kindle and literally couldn't put it down once I started reading it in bed last night. As a person with PD (Parkinson's Disease), I find it so refreshing and uplifting to read about Bev's ability to look for the humor in her circumstances. She turns potentially embarrassing moments into opportunities to laugh, lifting hearts and making new friends on her journey. I highly recommend this book to anyone with PD, family members and friends of PD folks, caregivers, and actually, anyone facing difficult circumstances, physical or otherwise. Humor lifts our hearts. Bev has given us all an incredible gift with this book. She IS a gift! Oh, and one more thing: Not only is this book funny, it's also filled with great, down-to-earth advice for people with Parkinson's -- so much so that she's been a guest blogger on the Michael J. Fox website twice within the last few months. Kudos, "YumaBev"!

This is a must read if you know a friend, neighbor, or relative who has Parkinson, or if you are a Parkinson patient yourself. Her delightful outlook on living positively with this disease is uplifting and encouraging, and her humor is contagious. I started reading her book and had a hard time putting it down. My husband and I are winter visitors in Yuma this year, and are fortunate enough to be able to attend her monthly support meetings. She had us at "welcome to the club no one wants to belong to". I enjoyed reading about her journey in life so much that I am going to order several copies of this book and donate them to our support group when we return home. Thank you so much Bev (and Wonderful Husband Sal) for publishing this book.

From beginning to end, this book written by Bev about the challenges of dealing with life while being bestowed with Parkinson's Disease is funny in unexpected ways and very intelligent in her meticulous and careful approach to what can be a debilitating condition. Bev is also very, very warm and human when discussing the serious side of who we want to be as Parkinson's people and what our choices are. Beautifully written and laugh-until-you-cry-funny; I'd like to say I haven't had so much fun since my last natural disaster, but why tempt fate? Thank you, Bev. You've done, so very much!

My husband has Parkinson's and is losing his speaking clarity. As part of his LVST voice/swallow training he is supposed to read aloud. This book has short stories that are about the perfect length for his reading and he can really relate to the stories. It was a really good gift for him and he is truly enjoying it.

I was looking for more humor which might lighten my wife's life with Parkinson's and her dailey travails with the disease.

This is a book that can lift you out of depression. I recommend this book for every Parkinson's patient out there. Helps you laugh at yourself. Helps you to know you have company fighting your disease.

This is a wonderful read, we sometimes take things too serious. When things are serious like Parkinson's we have to fight it and laugh at ourselves, laughter helps, but then so does exercise soooo get MOVING. Loved it really.
