The author, given his history as a BART employee with key access to the major players and behind the scenes activity of BART, is the perfect person to write this combination history and tell-all book about the San Francisco Bay Area's highly dysfunctional, yet desperately needed, public transport system. Michael Healy provides abundant detail around key decisions and events during BART's history, but also has an engaging writing style that makes this book a real page turner, rather than a dry book of statistics and dates. His telling of the internal mole hunt around a group of whistle-blowing engineers is really like a well-crafted mystery tale that had me on the edge of my seat. But he also highlights some lighter moments, such as his unorthodox decision to hire Henny Youngman (Take my BART - please!) as a spokesman. And his retelling of the many (literally) backroom deals that created BART is riveting, especially where he shows how close BART was to never existing due to political machinations. But most of all, the author shows how many of the problems plaguing BART today (technical problems; poor management; union issues; arrogance leading to poor planning (no redundancies built into the system because the initial engineers boasted of an ongoing 0% failure level!) have their origins in the heady mishmash of personalities, technologies, and ego that came together 50 years ago.

Michael C. Healey has written a very enjoyable, entertaining, and engaging book that I consider a pioneering work discussing the history of the Bay Area Rapid Transit or BART’s commuter train system. Healey, BART’s former media affairs manager and official spokesman, is a great story teller and showed that even a passenger train that will turn forty-five this September has a story to tell. I have grown up riding BART, so this book brings back many childhood memories as well as introduces me to brand new facts I have never known before. A partly autobiographical book in which he mentions himself in the first person and details his career as a BART employee makes this book especially entertaining to read.

This book gives a good description of the trials and difficulties that a transit system has in order to survive. The author does show a engaging writing style and familiarity with his subject (being head of media relations) does help. It is a fine addition to a library of mass transit systems. It is primarily about the operations and politics that happened behind the scenes. He does touch on most of the problems and people that influenced this emerging system.

Amazing history of the Bay Area Rapid Transit system for any transit geek like me and well worth the read!

This book provides a true behind-the-scenes look at critical moments in BART's history and gives a flavor for the grit required to deliver bold government initiatives. Even if you're not a train buff, this is an easy and engaging read.

Great book. Even purchased a copy for a friend.

As a 32 year veteran of BARTD, 1971-2003, it is a good book. Did see some mistakes and omissions, but otherwise worth reading. Thanks Mr. Healy .

There are a few translations of Shantideva's discourse out there. I got this one because my teacher suggested it as an alternative to another which she was working from. Her purpose was to show how different scholars can offer alternative readings of the text. And that hearing or reading those alternatives can be useful in getting the essence of the teachings. As to the content of the discourse, it seems to make the most sense to me if I take it a little at a time, just two pages a day and let the meaning of those two pages sink in. If you take "Guide..." as a long poem admonishing a group of monks to stick with the precepts of their order, it really doesn't make a lot of a sense to a layperson with no background in Buddhism. On the other hand, if you have been doing a bit of meditation and have been attempting to apply that practice to your daily encounters with people and to your own habits, Shantideva's "Guide.." is a very useful book.

A Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life (Bodhisattvacaryavatara) is a must have for anyone wishing to understand Mahayana buddhism, its truly a gem in the realm of spiritual texts. With this text alone one can find peace and learn how to maintain a level of equanimity during times of suffering and happiness alike. If you are just interested in a book on self help, this book is also great! There is no need to be buddhist to gain a lot of insight into human existence and our shared experience.

This is a terrific translation of Shantideva's classic poem, but, as a relative newcomer to Buddhist thought, I found it to be quite challenging. It is a text to be studied and savored. Despite its relatively short length, it still took me a couple of weeks to finish since I was constantly taking breaks to digest and interpret what was being said.I also must admit that, coming from a somewhat materialistic, Western background, it takes a shift in mental gears to focus on the needs of others as a means of gaining happiness.I'd also like to mention that this book is of a very high quality on the physical plane. The print is elegant. The texture of the paper is pleasing and the artwork is exceptional.

I have known several passages from this book. The whole book is satisfying and Batchelor makes it come alive. Very glad I bought it. Living up to it is a big ambition.

What an unbelievable story! I remember visiting Father Boyle about 20 years ago with a class. He seemed kind and gentle but he also seemed tired. So I after that visit, I didn't think about his ministry much.I came across the book when I saw it featured in a bookstore and decided to give it a try.I had stopped reading for the past decade or two. It has been mostly Netflix and Kdrama.I would start books and then never get past page 30.This wasn't just a book you coudln't put down. It's a book that grabbed a hold of you and shook you to your core.What a hero! What a man of God! What guts! What complete abandon!No wonder he looked exhausted (when I saw him 20 years ago).I was reminded of apostle Paul's paradoxical statement about his life and ministry 2 Cor 6"We put no obstacle in anyone's way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: by great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, riots, labors, sleepless nights, hunger; by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love; by truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; through honor and dishonor, through slander and praise. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold, we live; as punished, and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, yet possessing everything."Another reason why I feel such a deep sense of respect and admiration for Father G is that after my senior year in college, I went and worked in the inner city of Camden, New Jersey for 6 weeks and it was one of the toughest times of my life.We worked with kids and teenagers in one of the most gang/crime/drug infested parts of the country.I felt so overwhelmed and helpless. To justify my answer, I have worked for the past 7 years in a maximum security "correctional" facility for adjudicated adolescent males. There are many similarities between the events Father Boyle describes and those I am involved with. Corrections does not work...correction for these youth has becoming a training ground for gangs, crime and promotion to the "big boy jails and Penitentaries". Father Boyle's book is the most profound and relevant literature I have found on helping troubled, at-risk youth positively develop and become participating members of society. His subtitle "The Power of Boundless Compassion" leads into an incredible dialog and primer for positively accomplishing good changes in the lives of these youth. It is heartwarming and more than encouraging to read, study and digest this book. Father Boyle's approach and methods, if taken to heart and sincerely utilized, would vastly improve the lives of many young men and women while enriching our society and economy. This book has impacted me on a huge scale and has vastly improved my abilities to interact with and provide a much better environment for the growth and development of our troubled youth. this book has helped me to be more compassionate and, in doing so, is impacting the life of others.

Father Greg, or G-dog, as he is called, started Homeboy Industries in the roughest gang- capitol area of Los Angeles. A gang intervention program of this magnitude is not for the weak-kneed or for someone that thinks "I'll come and serve because I am better than they are"....This program for gang intervention and Father Boyle gets to the root or these individuals and families because he lives among them, he serves alongside the gangs and he loves them as Jesus intends us to love others.Don't read this book if you are offended by colorful language, for G-dog tells it like it is. And he lets his gang members do the same. You will learn about the different gangs and their interactions, yet will know no names. G-dog doesn't give any individual gang the glory...he treats them all equally. As I finished this book, I knew I would have a hard time living among the gangs, but God has called us all to different parts of the body. G-dog gets involved in so many lives, from before birth as he tells of a young girl gang-raped and pregnant, to handling over 150 funerals of gang members, many of which he has known since childhood. Thank you, Father Boyle, for serving where God prepared you to serve.The book is written from over 30 years of working among the gangs through Homeboy Industries. The stories abound with courage, faith and with laughter. You'll find yourself laughing out loud and wiping your eyes, either with amusement or hurt for a fellow human. The name of the book came from a gang-member..."G-dog,,,I'm gonna tattoo that on my heart." Reading this book left a tattoo on my heart also!

Clearly NOT for "dummies". Still, I shaved off a star because the actual field of NLP is a true specialty and the benefits would be elusive for the novice or the "do it yourself-er". Much like a book of "neurosurgery for dummies", this is a great way to learn the potential and theory behind NLP, but not a system to really use it. Still, with that being said, you get quite a lot of information on NLP here and as with most books in this series, it is well worth the money.

A great book to nail down the basics of this huge topic called "neurolinguistics programming." There are so many authors, and so many approaches, and so many techniques to each approach that a book like this must be sufficiently broad to touch on the essentials, and sufficiently deep to allow each topic to make a difference. There is also a number of solid references. I love the analogy of how to try to tackle this gargantuan field of study: the authors say to think of it like a hologram. Order is not as important as mastering each step that you learn at a time and adding that to the depth and breadth of you practice.

I have many books on NLP. If you have read one or two then you need this book. It puts you through a good sequence of study. It has many tables and worksheets to aid you and provide practical methods. Very complete. If you are coming at NLP cold this is not the book as it can get you to a point where you know you got information, but you are not quite sure how it is integrated and locks together. A great second or third book and I will be watching for this Author.

NLP is a powerful model of psychology and management, incorporating the subconscious mind, the power in intention, body language, and the spoken word. In this "Dummies" book, you will get a very general overview of NLP - enough to whet the whistle, and a little more.The concepts behind NLP are firmly rooted in the effects of our senses on the subconsious mind. NLP transforms these from a subconsious effect to a conscious one, where the NLP practitioner can influence their own or others behavior and outcomes by utilizing consciously the senses to drive behaviors.Discussing concepts such as anchors, swoosh patterns, and the power of the sopken word, Ready and Burton also provide the reader with simple to follow practical exercises, theory and tools to introduce the reader to NLP concepts and strategies.If you are interested in NLP, this books will give you the basics, and maybe a touch more. For a powerful and effective tool like NLP, however, like any other discipline, the Dummies book will only whet the appetite, not serve as a meal.

This, like all the "For Dummies" Series of books, explains the basic principles of NLP. This is a basic book to "put you on" the subject in no time, with the advantages of having a book to provide a summary of the principles and techniques of NLP and provide a basis for further understanding.

Easy to read and a great introduction to NLP. Anyone who has daily contact with other people should read this book.

This book is hard to read at times, partially to simple, partially just moves slowly. But it does say "for dummies" so I can't be too bummed by it.It's a good intro to NLP, not the best I've seen, but certainly useful to anyone interested in learning some NLP skills and adding to your conversational toolkit.

Everyone needs this book - the user’s guide to how the mind actually works vs what we think we know from old hand me down info.

 This is a slightly older coloring book (originally published in 2016), so I was very surprised to find that there were only 15 unique coloring designs in the book while the product blurb mentions 16. If it was originally a mistake, one would have thought it would be corrected by now. Because of this and the lack of a framing line at the outer edges, I reduced my rating by a star. I suggest that the artist take the opportunity now to either correct the book or the description.The designs are cute and are of a little witchy style girl. She is shown in a number of poses along with the flora and fauna that inhabit her garden. While you get 15 unique designs (including one which is more of a tag style page), you get two copies of each for a total of 30 coloring pages.The designs are detailed and have a great hand-drawn, sketch like quality to them. Because of that, the lines can be thin/thick or light/dark depending on how the artist was coloring that day.I want to note that the Amazon owned company, CreateSpace is now being folded into KDF (Kindle Direct Publishing.) These independent artist books will move along into the new group shortly if they have not already done so by now. According to what I’ve read, the same warehouses and printing presses will be used. No mention is made of paper but one assumes that it will be the same as well.I don’t know if the copy I received was printed by CreateSpace or by KDP, but I can say that it is the same paper I am used to receiving (for years now) from CreateSpace. That is: thin, white, slightly rough, and non-perforated. I will continue to check books as I receive them and will note, in new reviews, if the quality changes.This is what I found in this coloring book:15 little witch garden designs in the book (2 copies of each are included).Printed one side of the pagePaper is white, thin, slightly rough and non-perforated.The designs do not merge into the binding. There are unfinished elements at all outer edges of the designs. I wish that a framing line had been placed at those edges for a more finished look.Glue BindingKDP (Kindle Direct Publishing – formerly CreateSpace) Paper/Media QualityAlcohol-based markers bleed through the page quickly.Water-based markers bleed through in spots.Gel pens and India ink pens leave shadows on back of the page. India ink can bleed through if you apply heavily or multiple coats.Coloring Pencils work fairly well with this publisher’s paper provided you don’t press extremely hard while coloring. I find that I can layers the same color for deeper pigment or multiple colors and blended easily with a pencil style blending stick. This is true of both oil and wax based pencils. I have also found that hard lead pencils leave dents through the paper.I like to use a blotter when working in this type of book. I use a page of card stock or several sheets of heavyweight paper under my working page. It keeps seeping ink and marring dents from ruining the pages below.

Just a magical coloring book. The drawings delightfully pull you into this fantasy world. I love this type of art work and Penelope's Garden is beautifully drawn. Dea Lenihan's drawings are quickly becoming some of my favorites! I love having the same pic printed twice so I can try out different color schemes & supplies. Good quality paper! I highly recommend this book for Colorists of all ages!

I have been wanting Dea Lenihan’s Book Penelope’s Garden for quite a while and I’m not disappointed. The pictures are so cute and detailed. I cannot wait to complete them all. Dea is so talented and one of my favorite artists. This is a must have for any colorist collection.

I really like the whimsical pictures with enough white space to do shading. Unfortunately the ink the book is printed with has a tendency to smudge if you color over it and makes all of my colors look grey. I like the artists work but probably won’t buy another book unless the print quality is improved.

Adorably cute, and beautifully drawn...this will provide hours of stress-relieving colouring...and what's nice about this colouring book is that the pictures are only on one side of the page, allowing you to remove the page and frame it if you wish...to give to a friend or keep...! I bought two books...one for me (yay!) and one for my 85 year old mom who likes to colour...

I make for an odd survivalist, facing sixty and a knee replacement. But Creek Stewart makes you feel like you don't have to be a Navy Seal to learn a few things about nature and disaster preparedness. I've read a surprising number of these sort of books because I'm an historian, and in a way, they're related - when the Puritans couldn't get wheat to grow, they went greening and made desperation flour out of acorns, if they had to. But these are skills that people seem to be losing; most guys don't even carry a pocket knife anymore, which was a universal for my father's generation, with all those ex-Boy Scouts. Even a lot of Greenies out there don't seem to realize just how dangerous a desert hike can be. Creek Stewart does know, and he's a great teacher.A lot of it is common sense, sense that isn't so common anymore. But a lot of it is stuff that probably wouldn't have occurred to you, particularly if imagination hasn't taken you to a particular sort of disaster. Like here in Indiana - sooner or later, the New Madrid fault is going to go, and it'll be worse than any earthquake in California. "Sheltering in place" may not be an option, because the "place" could be rubble. Follow his advice and you'll have everything you need, and Stewart will always try to save you money, too, recommending the simplest and cheapest solutions. Now that I've read this, I'm going to pick up a couple others of his books. Definitely above the average.

How to Get the Most Out of B.O.B."Build the Perfect Bug Out Bag: Your 72-Hour Disaster Survival Kit" by Creek Stewart is a well-thought-out book that is clearly formatted and illustrated to help convey the information within. The format of this book reminds me of another excellent book titled "Build the Perfect Survival Kit" by John McCann, that I also highly recommend. This book is excellent for the novice and experienced Prepper, as well as the conventional camper and survivalist. This book provides an excellent blueprint for compiling components for a Bug Out Bag (BOB), as well as selecting the perfect BOB to carry all the discussed gear and components. The gear discussed in this book covers everything from field camping tools (pocket tools, ax, shovels, etc.), hygienic items, various environmental clothing, lightweight shelters (tarps, etc.), field bedding (sleeping bags, hammocks, etc.), water purification, rations and ignition systems for fire making. All the equipment discussed in this book predominantly focuses on the items being lightweight and provide multiple use items, which is a common theme when selecting items for survival situation. Additionally, this book provides a host of inset text boxes providing valuable survival tips, in addition to the information instructing you how to develop your own BOB. This book also had a few interesting chapters that stood out to me that I think are worth mentioning. Chapter 13 covers information on protection and self-defense, with some discussion of the self-defense mentality. Although this chapter was very brief it did however cover all the salient points, as this topic alone could be its own book. Another interesting chapter covered some basic information about bugging out with pets. This is a topic I have not seen covered in other books and found it enlightening. Finally, chapter 17 on mental and physical preparedness was another chapter providing the reader basic information on the topic, which is not generally covered in book of this type. I personally believe this to be one of the most important chapters in the book, without a strong body it is hard to keep a strong mind. And the mind is the most important tool the Prepper or survivalist will ever have. Overall I highly recommend this book and believe that the experienced and novice will learn something from this book.

This was an easy to read book that made me rethink my personal needs for a bag out bag (BOB)/scenario. I am the father of three girls...one older and two younger. I lost my 16 yo son last year and it turned my world inside out. Him and I had always discussed and shared lots of ideas and "what if's" and we were both always aware of his mother and the other girls at all times. It didn't matter whether we were on a country hike, at the park, or in the mall. If I had point he had my back and vise versa. Now I seem overwhelmed keeping my eyes open and on my family. I also had to rethink a bug out scenario as he was definitely a very strong part of the support system. Creek Stewart's book helps compartmentalize and outline every part of a well supplied bag...one that is designed perfectly for me and my family. Probably the biggest thing I learned is that your bug out bag is dynamic not static...it changes with you and your families needs and the seasons of the year. I have also purchased Bug Out Vehicles as I am modifying an 05 Excursion and Bug Out Survival Skills. I am just getting ready to begin reading them, but I already know they'll be a valuable resource.
