This review is hard for me, so I will break it down.Content of the books: 5 stars - excellent.Physical quality of the books - 3 stars.First let me hit on the physical quality of the books - the only reason this review isn't a solid 5 stars. The first and third books are made well, with white, even pages and beautiful dust jackets with a matte finish covering a glossy inside. The second book, however, is where my issue lies. I am not for sure if this issue is consistent of all the sets being a sold or if mine was a fluke, but the second book consists of yellower, cheaper pages cut in some sort of ridiculous jagged angle. I could have dealt with all three books this way, but it bothers me that just the second one was like this. Now for the actual books themselves: they are incredible. I highly recommend this series to anyone looking for a trilogy, a dystopian series, or just a good book to become immersed in. It might say Young Adult in the category.ii am almost 28 - far from being a young adult myself. The story is told from a split perspective of the two main characters. At first I disliked this, as this is usually not my favorite type of format. However, this set up was nicely executed, both in writing and the format of the pages. Each character has his/her own font type and font color, as well as a heading at the top of ever right page to remind you whose perspective you are reading. I have never witnessed it so beautifully executed quite like this in the past. The story is incredible and I breezed through the series in three days (I did have to work and sleep). I was captivated wholeheartedly by this series and wanted to keep reading despite hunger, obligations, and a need for sleep. The writing is beautiful and easily captivates the audience. The level of detail is excellent enough that one knows exactly what everything looks like, while not being overwhelming in a Wuthering Heights/Romanticism kind of way. These books are beautifully written and incredible. If the jagged pages is an issue, I won suggest purchasing the books separately (but then you won't receive the free bonus) or take your chances that mine was a fluke. Either way, this series is worth your time.

June and Day come from two very different backgrounds, June came from an elite family while Day lived in one of the poor sectors of the Republic. After getting to know each other their entire lives change for better or for worse and now they are more or less in the same situation. After escaping from Day‘s execution June and Day are on the run from the entire Republic.Day is injured, his brother and only living family is either a prisoner or a lab rat of the Republic.June has nowhere to go after leaving everything she knows behind her to save Day.With nothing left to loose they take an offer from the Patriots that are fighting against the government of the Republic. All they have to do in return for the Patriots help with all their problems is to assassinate the new Elector, Anden, after his father‘s recent death. But in those troublesome times after the old Elector‘s death where the iron grip that the government had over it‘s people is starting to falter who can Day and June really trust and how much can their newly formed relationship handle. This like the first book was a fast paced read with some twists and turns. We get to know more about the world that the story takes place in and we get to know the main characters better. I really liked this book and can‘t wait to read the last book in the trilgogy to see how this ends.

In this second book in the Legend series, Day and June become involved in another series of non-stop adventures as they try to carve out a life for themselves after escaping from the clutches of the Republic. At the end of Legend, the first book in the series, June had just broken Day out of prison with the help of the rebel group known as the Patriots. The Patriots, however, refused to help them leave town without payment of some kind. But now that June and Day have traveled to Los Vegas on their own, they join up with the Patriots again, meeting with one of their high leaders, a man who calls himself Razor. And he seems to be satisfied that their pledging their loyalty to the Patriots will be payment enough. So June and Day embark on a series of adventures working, first with, then against the Patriots. In the meantime, the old Elector Primo, head of the Republic, has died and been replaced by his son, Anden, without missing a beat. The first project the Patriots want them to undertake is Anden’s murder.June’s part of this plot is supposed to be to lure Anden to the place where the Patriots are lying in wait for them. But in meeting with Anden in the early stages of gaining his trust, she discovers that he seems to be anxious to abandon his father’s obnoxious policies in favor of treating the common people better. June tries to warn Anden of the plot at the last minute, but somehow his military escort takes him to the site of the assassination attempt in spite of his orders. He barely escapes with his life, and June’s distrust of Razor appears to be validated.Day, meanwhile, has held back from an all-out attack on Anden based on what appeared to be a signal from June, and the two of them are now forced to flee from both the Patriots and the Republic. They wind up in the Colonies. The Colonies look impressive at first glance. And they welcome Day and June with open arms. But they don’t seem to know anything about what the Patriots have been up to. And then Kaede shows up and tells Day the real truth about the assassination attempt. It appears that the Republic is a military dictatorship with everybody working either directly or indirectly for the government. But the Colonies are run by four giant corporations who control everything people do just as the government of the Republic does. They appear more prosperous on the surface. But are they really any better in the long run?Day and June agree to return with Kaede in an attempt to keep Razor from taking over control of the Republic. Will they succeed? Will it help?I can't get access to write a review of Champion, the third book in the series, so I am going to append it to this review since this is what comes up when I try to go to a review for Champion.Champion is also a 5-star book. It is worth going all the way through the series for. This final book in the Legend is as exciting and action-filled as the earlier installments, and the plot is even more unexpected. The Colonies report a new plague racing along their war front. Abandoning their peace negotiations with Anden, they accuse the Republic of starting it (and maybe they did) and demand a cure NOW, or they will attack the Republic with everything they have, and they have struck a new alliance with Africa that should give them an overpowering advantage. They allow the Republic a few days to develop the cure, but then they go on and attack well before time is up.Day, June, and the remnants of the Patriots, who they just happen to find in an underground train station where evacuation of the capital is underway, launch one of their guerrilla attacks on the Colonies’ invasion force. The Republic comes up with a plan to thwart the Colonies’ plans, but it is subject to a myriad of twists and turns. And meanwhile, Day is battling for his life due to problems that have little to do with the war, while June finds herself in direct danger from the traitorous Commander Jameson who has escaped the death sentence she was supposed to have undergone and is now specifically targeting June with her robot-like intensity. It doesn’t end like you would expect. In fact, it doesn’t even end like Day and June expect.

The "story" is how to cut paper circles efficiently although the book never mentions that the circles are paper. Paraphrased, it says: "circles are fun but scissors take too long so let's use a hole punch, but that is imperfect so let's use a machine, but we should add a computer so the machine works automatically, but the paper moved somehow so we need an arm & a camera & sensors. Now you know robotics." This book may inspire a kid to ask questions about robotics, but they aren't going to learn much, if anything, from reading this book. & it's pretty dull with boring pictures of a bunch of blue circles.

From the Back Cover

The fourth edition of this best-selling guide to Prolog and Artificial Intelligence has been updated to include key developments in the field while retaining its lucid approach to these topics. Divided into two parts, the first part of the book introduces the programming language Prolog, while the second part teaches Artificial Intelligence using Prolog as a tool for the implementation of AI techniques. Prolog has its roots in logic; however the main aim of this book is to teach Prolog as a practical programming tool. This text therefore concentrates on the art of using the basic mechanisms of Prolog to solve interesting problems. The fourth edition has been fully revised and extended to provide an even greater range of applications, which further enhance its value as a self-contained guide to Prolog, AI or AI Programming for students and professional programmers alike. Features: · Combined approach to Prolog and AI allows flexibility for learning and teaching· Provides a thorough representation of AI, emphasizing practical techniques and Prolog implementations· Prolog programs in the book are available for download from the book's companion website at www.pearsoned.co.uk/bratko . Lecturers visiting the website have access to PowerPoint slides. New for this edition:   ·   Coverage of constraint logic programming (CLP) is extended and now introduced earlier in the book, in the Prolog part   ·   Most of the existing chapters on AI techniques have been systematically improved and updated   ·   Coverage of planning methods is deepened in a new chapter that includes implementations of partial order planning and the GRAPHPLAN approach   ·   The treatment of search methods now includes an RTA* program (real-time A* search)   ·   The chapter on meta-programming (now chapter 25) is extended by the addition of sections on abductive reasoning, query-the-user interpreter, and a sketch of CLP interpreter, all implemented as Prolog meta-interpreters   ·   Programming examples are refreshed throughout the book, making them more interesting and practical. One such example introduces semantic reasoning with the well-known lexical database WordNet®    Author: Professor Ivan Bratko leads the AI Lab in the Faculty of Computer and Information Science at the University of Ljubljana. He has taught Prolog worldwide, as well as applied Prolog in medical expert systems, robot programming, qualitative modelling and computer chess research.

#753,161 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

In searching Prolog courses on-line, this book is referenced as #1 over and over again. So far I have read about 1/2 the book. It does not disappoint. I find Prolog a hard language to get proficency. The "declarative style" of programming is very different from the other 3 paradigms of programming. (The other three are procedural, object oriented, and functional. As a prerequisite to this book I would suggest "The Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs." ) This book gives lots of examples and exposition to get both a logical and intuitive feel of problem solving in Prolog. I am afraid it make take more than one reading to understand Prolog.

Having just read a book on automated reasoning which covered topics in logic, such as unification and resolution, I was very pleased with the prolog programming language, in that it takes concepts from logic, and uses them in ways that can be applied to a number of interesting areas of AI, such as NLP, planning, and expert systems. I thought Bratko succeeded in making this connection with logic, without burdening the reader with notation and concepts that are really not needed for writing or understanding prolog programs. The book also worked for me on the level of providing a good introduction to the syntax and sematics of the language. The first 200 pages succeed to this end. Finally, the last 13 chapters can be summarized as representing an introduction to AI from a prolog perspective. On the positive side, he shows how to apply prolog to all of the modern, main streams of AI study. However, on the negative, the slant towards prolog in these chapters tends to oversimplify these disciplines. My impression of the language is that it seems good as a prototying language, since it is declarative in nature, but from my experimentation (using SWI Prolog) I think I could write better implementations using c or java.In closing, Bratko's book represents a very good place to start learning prolog and the world of AI.

A new edition will be out soon, in 2010. This is an excellent book on Prolog *and* on AI.For example, chapter 19 is an introduction to inductive learning in first-order logic, an advanced topic rarely found in introductory books. The example program HYPER is a very powerful learner as compared to other "propositional" machine learning methods such as decision trees, neural networks, or support vector machines. I have ported HYPER to Lisp and am still exploring it.Prolog is not a very popular language nowadays, but basic knowledge of it is still essential to learning logic-based AI.

Professor Bratko has done a tremendous job of putting all the fundamental concepts of Prolog and its applications in various areas of AI. Although this book is focused on Prolog, the concepts that he has discussed are so fundamental that they can be implemented in other languages like Java as well.I recommend this book to everyone who wants to learn Prolog. I would also recommend the readers to use a Prolog system to work out the examples and exercises as s/he goes through every chapter. A DEC10 Prolog system (like SICStus Prolog) would probably be the best companion for this book.

Though I have just started this book, I can tell that it is going to be amazing. I have been trying to find a good introduction to Prolog for some time now, and this is exactly what I had been looking for. Clear presentation, beautiful and complete editing work, easy to understand, and comprehensive. If you do want to use this book for A.I. though, and you either already understand Prolog or would rather work in lisp/python/etc. this book may be a bit much for you, either in terms of redundancy or over-saturation. However, if you can manage to slug through it (it is rather huge at 678 pgs), I think that anyone interested in A.I. or Prolog could find something helpful in this book.Overall, I am excited to work through this book, and I will probably update my review once I have done so.

I teach programming in Prolog and Artificial Intelligence in a Mexican University. This is an essential book for Prolog programming, excellent!A loving fourth edition 2012 from Ivan Bratko.

For a review of both Prolog and AI-based algorithms, this is the book to read! I learend Prolog AND AI from this in one semester, and it was my very last class bfore graduation. WE used Turbo Prolog and if you can find a copy, I'd recommend it.I've read reviews of this book that state Dr. BRatko is talking to peers or himself. I can't udnerstand it., The text was perfectly udnerstandable to me. And re-reading it, it still is. I plan to use the AI half of the book when writing my master's thesis next year.

First page provides link to web resource page where Prolog code should be available. Unfortunately, if you go there, there is message that "companion web page not available yet" and the only available one is for 3rd edition.Otherwise, great Prolog application book, however here and there pretty shallow, such as chapter on CLP

I just got my rental copy for next semester and it’s in abhorrent condition! Toddler crayon scribbles, crumpled pages, water damage, curled covers... awful! I gave it 3 (as opposed to no) stars because of the book’s content, though I don’t know if I’ll be able to effectively use it in this condition.

For the very basics of biological aging processes, this textbook will do just fine. This textbook is not intended for Allied Healthcare professions, unless it is used for an overview of the basic biological constructs of aging. In other words, this book is not comprehensive science textbook.

Everyone should have a copy of this. Such a great book and so well organized and written

Bought for class. Very interesting if you are in the field, but this class has helped me decide not to get into a geriatrics field. While it is a well written book, my view is tainted by the class.

Item as described, has helped me a lot in my dimensions of aging class.

Good information

it is what I need for my class. Book looks to be in new condition

Great!

A revised molecular approach to a classic on viscoelastic behavior Because viscoelasticity affects the properties, appearance, processing, and performance of polymers such as rubber, plastic, and adhesives, a proper utilization of such polymers requires a clear understanding of viscoelastic behavior. Now in its third edition, Introduction to Polymer Viscoelasticity remains a classic in the literature of molecular viscoelasticity, bridging the gap between primers on polymer science and advanced research-level monographs. Assuming a molecular, rather than a mechanical approach, the text provides a strong grounding in the fundamental concepts, detailed derivations, and particular attention to assumptions, simplifications, and limitations. This Third Edition has been entirely revised and updated to reflect recent developments in the field. New chapters include: Phenomenological Treatment of Viscoelasticity Viscoelastic Models Time-Temperature Correspondence Transitions and Relaxation in Polymers Elasticity of Rubbery Networks Dielectric and NMR Methods With detailed explanations, corresponding equations, and experimental methods, supported by real-life applications (as well as the inclusion of a CD-ROM with data to support the exercises), this Third Edition provides today's students and professionals with the tools they need to create polymers with more desirable qualities than ever.

The Underground Is Massive: How Electronic Dance Music Conquered America

From the Back Cover

What started as an underground party business—run and dominated by youths and hustlers—grew into the music business's greatest and biggest success. The Underground Is Massive is the first-ever big-picture history of the American electronic dance music underground, viewed through the lens of nineteen parties over thirty years—from the black, gay underground clubs of Chicago and Detroit's elite teen-party scene through nineties "electronica" to today's EDM-festival juggernaut, the book takes in the rise of the Internet and Burning Man, 9/11, and the collapse of the record business—and vividly charts why and how it took nearly three decades after electronic dance music became a global youth soundtrack for it to hit big in the land that birthed it.Through unparalleled insider access to anecdotes, interviews, and history, Michaelangelo Matos demystifies how what once belonged to a devoted audience of casual partiers and diehard dancers has become America's soundtrack of choice and changed the music industry completely. Matos expertly tackles the vast diversity of EDM's musical landscape, its technologically prophetic yet illicit origins, and the path by which underground raves grew into fiercely successful music festivals. Taking in legendary artists from Frankie Knuckles to Moby as well as the biggest names in EDM—Diplo, Skrillex, Deadmau5, David Guetta, Tiësto, and Daft Punk—Matos's deep mix of sources and wide-lens overview of the culture make every chapter a page-turning revelation.

I'd put off reading this book for a while because of the "EDM" subtitle, "How Electronic Dance Music Conquered America." Call me old fashioned (or simply old), but I don’t care for the Skrillex/Deadmau5 generation of music. I like my dance music spun on vinyl w/ two turntables and a mixer. I come from the Detroit/Berlin school of techno and the Chicago/New York school of house, where the DJ doesn’t jump around on stage and act like a rock star. Needless to say, the subtitle of the book alone made me tentative about reading it. I’d enjoyed one of Michaelangelo Matos’ books before, however, his 33 1/3 book about Prince’s Sign of the Times, so I thought I’d give this new book of his a chance. After all, it’s not often a book of this scope comes along. Dan Sicko’s Techno Rebels had been published back in 1999. While still required reading for Detroit techno heads, the stories in that book have since been told time and time again. Simon Reynolds’ Energy Flash (aka Generation Ecstasy) is another touchstone, but it too has gone out of date. I tried reading it again recently, and the glamorization of Ecstasy there is off-putting, not to mention the championing of sub-sub-niche genres specific to the U.K. that anyone under age 30 has probably never heard of and never will. The other touchstone book in the “techno” cannon is Last Night a DJ Saved My Life, a great book but, again, focused on the distant past and New York-centric.Now along comes The Underground Is Massive, which spans the early Chicago/Detroit scene of the 1980s to the EDM era, wrapping up w/ Daft Punk’s Grammy win in 2014. The chapters are centered on specific events in history, generally a club, rave, or festival that ushered in a new era. The three chapters centered on Detroit – the Music Institute, November 24, 1989; Richie Hawtin’s Spastik party, August 13, 1994; and Detroit Electronic Music Festival, May 26-29, 2000 – were of particular interest to me. I was thrilled to see all the interviews that Matos drew from, particularly Rob Theakston and Joshua Glazer, two of the most bleeding-heart techno guys out there. As someone who was there (for the mid- to late ‘90s, at least), I can tell you that this is very much the true story, the Detroit part at least. Matos spoke to the right people, researched the right archives (i.e., the Hyperreal.org mailing lists were vital back in the day), and focuses on the right events. Plus, he rattles off discograpical information left and right – probably too much so for casual fans who don’t know Carl Craig from Derrick May, or Richie Hawtin from Plastikman, but on the other hand, record collectors and DJs should take notes while reading, as there's wealth of information here. The appendix of DJ mixes itself is reason enough to keep this book on your shelf for reference. In the end, these three aforementioned chapters alone prove to be essential reading for Detroit techno historians.Of course, not everyone is into Detroit techno – precious few, in fact. As for those looking for the “EDM” angle as teased in the book’s subtitle, I suspect they may be disappointed to discover that the term doesn’t even come up until chapter 17 (page 340 of 382 in my Kindle edition), Electric Daisy Carnival, 2011. I must say, this pleased me (the glossing over of "trance" too). I’d read every page of the book to this point, and I wasn’t about to stop, so I pushed forward to the end. I’m glad I did because I understand the EDM phenomenon better now. Can’t say I’m itching to listen to Skrillex, but at least I have a better concept of why he’s as popular as he is. In any event, it was my sense that these last few chapters differ from the rest of the book. For one, the discographical minutia goes out the window. Matos breezes through post-2010 history (if it even counts as “history” yet) at a much faster clip than he does earlier in the book, and at times, there is a hint of dismissiveness. For instance, Daft Punk circa ’96 are framed as game-changing, whereas Daft Punk circa ’14 are framed with considerably less reverence. My sense was that this post-2010 part of the book wasn’t Matos’ favorite part either but rather the book publisher’s. In 2015, "EDM" is the new "electronica"; "techno" and "house" are passe, the province of old-school curmudgeons. In fairness to Matos, he uses the Introduction to pretty much say, this is my book (i.e., my subjective take on the subject matter), and if you don’t like it, write your own because I can only fit so much in this one. Hopefully others are motivated to take up the challenge because you can't please everyone w/ books like this -- too much music out there to cover in a 400-page book and tastes vary from region to region.I enthusiastically recommend The Underground Is Massive to anyone curious about the 1980s/1990s, especially anyone interested in the Chicago, Detroit, New York, and California scenes – or the Midwest raves scene, which gets far more attention here than I’ve ever seen elsewhere. The late-'90s "electronica" era also gets a fair examination, Moby in particular. Don’t let the EDM subtitle dissuade you; this is a history book for house/techno heads. Personally, I would have liked to see more discussion of the Detroit-Berlin connection. I suppose that’s another book, though (perhaps the recent Tresor oral history that to my knowledge hasn't been translated to English yet). Selfishly, I’d like to see even more exploration of the Detroit scene, more quotes from guys like Dean Major (i.e., Syst3m), dare I say “shady” guys who were major players but never really came out from the shadows, presumably because what they were doing wasn’t entirely legal (surprise, surprise). That’s another book I’d be keen to read some day, a behind-the-scenes oral history about the most legendary rave parties described in Matos' book, from the point of view of the promoters and DJs as well as the partiers and -- now this would be cool -- the police who had to go bust up those parties every weekend. Another angle might be the How Music Got Free approach, where the story is told from the perspective of a few choice insiders, some of whom were on the wrong side of the law. The chapter about Even Further '96 is kind of like that, and it's something of a horror show on several counts, a parent's worst nightmare. As we await further books like this, The Underground Is Massive is a valuable addition to the cannon, up there w/ Techno Rebels, Last Night a DJ Saved My Life, and antiquated or not, Energy Flash. I'm already looking forward to a revised, extended edition in a few years' time. This easily could have been double the length it is, probably triple if it were to drill down deeper into the post-2010 era.

United States pop culture has had a very different view of dance music than the rest of the world. Despite it's origins in this country and despite being about the same age as hip-hop, the many variants of electronic music have never really broken through to the mainstream, until recently. Now every major festival seems to have an EDM element to it even if it's not entirely dedicated to the sound. Matos takes us from the roots of the sound and the parties up to some of the most recent festivals, introducing us along the way to many of the movers, shakers and originators that got us to this point. Maybe you were at one of the parties documented, or one similar, you'll be transported back to the dancefloor. You'll hear the beat of the songs mentioned, and feel that familiar shiver up your spine remembering the first time a track really touched you. Maybe you've never been to a rave, festival or nightclub where this music lives, but heard about this counter culture, this will give a glimpse of what it was like.

This is a magnificent chronicle of music history that expounds upon the enigmatic world of underground music and its evolution in an interesting, respectful and thought-provoking manner. I am an old-head raver (and always one of the oldest in the crowd jumping up and down) who started as a house-music freak, and love, love, love all of the sub-genres. I am so appreciative to the pioneers and this book pays homage and give props. A must read for all EDM fans! If you don't know where it started, you'll fall for anything!

My book arrived perfect. Clean cover, no bends or frays. I was hooked upon reading the first few page excerpts.I loved the photos included and the in-depth history and knowledge by the author in regards to house music, EDM, techno, and legendary DJs and producers.I was honestly wishing the book would never end.

EDM still isn't, and probably never will be, a family of musics that sing to my soul, but this is a fantastically well-written account of its infancy and development.

Loved it, as an old school raver that went to my first party in 99 this brought back some great memories. Great story, writes very good, big up for writing the history of our scene.

As both fan of the scene since 1991 and editor for Massive Magazine (mentioned many times within the book) for several years, I have read many books that try to capture an always changing movement and The Underground is Massive is the best out there! A solid read that you can't put down.

Great

Review

“These magnificent photographs capture the romance of construction sites with the precision and poetry and insistent probing curiosity we have come to expect from Stanley Greenberg. For lovers of photography, architecture, city life, or simply the physical world, this book is a must have.”—Phillip Lopate (Phillip Lopate)“Stanley Greenberg specializes in revealing those aspects of our man-made environment that would otherwise remain unseen—the hidden infrastructure of New York City, the water tunnels that form the city’s mysterious lifelines, and now, with Architecture under Construction, the brilliantly illuminated inner structures of important recent buildings. Greenberg’s photographs take the viewer beyond the ‘look’ of new edifices and directly to their essence—past the skins and into the bones—of contemporary architecture.” (Gail Buckland, The Cooper Union)“In these truly beautiful images, Stanley Greenberg deftly realizes one of Louis Kahn's most iconic insights: that a building is at its most sublime at two moments—when it is under construction, and when it is in ruin.” (Kenneth Frampton, Columbia University)

This is essentially a photo album on metropolitan buildings during their construction period. It is a large format book which is beautifully printed on acid free paper and bound nicely. All the photos are in black and white. Each page holds a single photo (with perhaps a single exception at the beginning). A quite informative foreword (by Joseph Rosa) accompanies the photos. The compositions range from almost purely abstracts (p17) to essentially documentary ones (?p67) although I dare say most can be read as abstractions of a varying degree. The afterword by the author, describing the shooting conditions, is a pleasure to read!"Abstract monochromes of naked or partly covered constructions" may not sound particularly inviting for many potential readers, I guess. Still, I have found most of the images produced using a large format film camera to be really beautiful; in composition, framing and tonality. If you wonder how a study of verticals, horizontals and diagonals can be this satisfying and even intriguing, just turn a few pages.
