Poignant, hilarious and fascinating, and at all times straightforwardly humble, this is one of the best autobiographies I have stumbled upon in a long time. Although I am by no means a connoisseur of autobiographies, I do read quite a lot and have no shame in throwing a partially read book back onto the shelf if it's not to my taste (I'm looking at you, The Alienist). Freedom Found is beautifully written and follows the epic life of Warren Miller, finally showing you the man behind over 50 years of iconic winter sports filming. Not only does this book recount, first hand, many American eras that few people alive can remember (e.g., the Great Depression), it's told by a brilliant mind with incredible life experience (the book opens with a quick ski trip down an ACTIVE VOLCANO! Common. And we have the footage to prove it). As attributed to the man himself, it makes you really take to heart his admonishment: “Don’t take life too seriously, because you can’t come out of it alive.â€
Such dynamic man with such a great life story. It's hard to grasp how much one person can experience in a life time, but Mr. Miller does a wonderful job of bringing you in to the fantastic journey of his life. His challenges, triumphs, and all of the great stories in between. 5 stars for content, all of the great ski history and entertainment value. If you have ever watched a Warren Miller film, like to ski, or love the entrepreneurial mind this book is a must read. And don't be surprised if you find yourself planning your next adventure when your done reading it. This book reminds you that there is so much more to life, you just have to go out and discover it!
This book is incredibly boring. Based on the Warren Miller movies I have enjoyed I assumed this book would be full of humor and funny stories. Quite the opposite. Warren is surprisingly uptight and judgmental. Maybe that's because he wrote this book later in life as an old grump, I don't know. Throughout the book he judges the Kennedy family, people who drink, the Simpsons TV Show, and basically anyone who enjoys themselves. Total opposite of what I was expecting from a quirky ski film maker.The book is chronological. I got about 2/3rds in and he was still writing about the early 60s. I only have about 100 pages to go and he still has not discussed the modern era. Also each chapter is very short and full of fluff. It's like he was just trying to think of things to write about to take up space in his book. Some of his stories are total dead-ends with no point.All in all I'm grateful for the movies this guy made but he didn't need to write a book. Don't waste your time with this.
A sad, fascinating, humorous, inspiring story written by a master story-teller. I'm glad to know much more about the life of this man who provided so much joy, pleasure and entertainment over the years. Thank you, Mr. Miller, for taking the time to introduce me to the mountains that I have so grown to love over the years. Thank you also for your honest and straight-forward perspective on the joys of a simple life.
If you ever dreamed (even a little bit) about being a ski bum, you will enjoy this book. Even if you didn't grow up on Warren Miller movies in the community rec center you will like Warren's storytelling of a fascinating life spent travelling the world and his uncanny ability to sort of "make it up" as he went along. The book is well written and there seems to be no end to the interesting situations that Warren found himself in. I always loved his ski movies but I had no idea that his life behind the scenes was so much more interesting than the movies.
Good read! I found out a lot about Warren Miller that I didn't know. Definitely have to admire him. This book is highly recommended.
I have been a fan of Warren Miller's movies since the 1980s. I have never missed an annual movie since. The last 10 years of movies have really missed something and now I know why. Warren wasn't part of them.There are a great many stories that Warren's fans will love to hear. But the book is also a heartfelt and introspective look at Warren himself. What a life he's lead! I admire and envy the man far more than before I read the book.This is a must read book for any fan.
I’m bias as I have loved his films since I was a kid so I was extremely interested in knowing about his life. I am also a skiers so it was wild to hear him discuss all the people that he became friends with that have had a massive impact within the ski industry around the world. It’s just wild. It’s also deeply revealing. I appreciate him including his faults and struggles. I just wish I had the chance to meet him.
