From the story line with part one it had a nice pace and interesting story line. I felt part two could have been combined with part one and extended. I felt that part two was way too quick of a read and left me with unanswered questions from things in part 2. Everything was just cleaned it and ended. I’m confused about how Meghan couldn’t defend herself after the hospital scene in part one. I wish part 2 was developed and fleshed out more to explain Astrid and his abilities (unless it was already explained in another book). The way the story went the timelines seemed off and confusing

4 stars bc of editing errors but good read...Loved Deray and happy Eva finally found her a good man even tho the cloak cost him to cheat in the beginning...Happy for Niles and Kat in the end amd happy she killed Megan trifling behind and her mom got what she deserved too...Faine got on my nerves and was so happy when he died along with that other elder...also happy Caleb found him a good woman as well, I think Zurie is good for him but I hope they can somehow have kids in the future

Normally, I don't read paranormal,but after reading some of the reviews from.Book 1, I'm happy that I took a chance. The Series was fast pace, but The storyline flowed. Everyone had a purpose and role. I loved when Eva had the babies and Deray was o suspecting 1, I can only imagine his expression. Bravo!

I love Eva and Deray , I'm happy everyone got there happiness ending. Hope you come back with story about the brother.

Seriously dangerous stuff.’”In The Witch’s Daughter we get to hear about a witch named Elizabeth and her long life as she shares it with a young mentor and as it was shared in her Book of Shadows. Elizabeth was made into a witch by a man named Gideon when she was young, and he continues to come for her through out generations and manifesting in different ways.There were some really interesting parts of this story, but for me it felt a bit flat and boring overall. I am willing to admit that this may have been just as much about my mood as about the book itself. I may still try reading another book from the series later on as I really enjoy the subject but had a hard time connecting to this book for whatever reason. I am giving this book 3 stars.

If author Paula Brackston wishes to capture the niche as a writer of novels featuring witch women, she must offer stories with more fully developed characters and situations that are less redundant and more resplendent with magic. "The Witch's Daughter" fails on both counts. Lead character, Bess, is the usual victim of the witch hunt, who must not only run from amassed villagers waving pitchforks and torches, but from the evil witch maker who manipulated her mother into selling her soul to ensure her daughter's safe passage through the ravages of the life-stealing plague and now wants only to live out eternity with her as Abelard and Heloise witch lovers for the ages. Instead of telling Bess's story once, Brackston feels the need to reiterate the chase three times over, presenting flimsy scenarios that only her heroine does not see through despite her awakened senses, great talent to heal and enact magic. The resulting tale is three times as long as it needs be, pressing the reader into a place where his/her patience is sorely strained and the ending more than predictable.Bess's hijinks span from the present day back into the dark days of the witch hunts of the 17th century. However, even after repeated identity reinventions, that allow her to keep her youth and beauty, Bess is beleaguered by bad judgement and over optimism when she convinces herself that again her nemesis has not again found her out, or disguised himself as someone close to her. Sadly, she falls into the same trap over and over again thinking that for once she will be able to satisfy her need to heal and simultaneously hide in plain sight. She seems to forget that the evil Gideon is basically as immortal as she is and isn't about to give up when there aren't many others in the world with their unique attributes. Brackston proves that wisdom does not come with age even if her readers know otherwise, and this after just the short period of time it takes to read a third of the book.Brackston does provide a thoroughly detailed backdrop. Her sense of place and time is superb, despite some anomalies that should have been corrected by a good editor. Her sequences depicting magic are equally enchanting but lack substance. Interesting enough, as I read this book in Kindle format, many readers seem to use the book as a primer for basic witchcraft; there are over 100 highlights on passages that revolve around different spells, herbs and magical verses. I did not think this book to be a resource for any sort of Wiccan knowledge--reading Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs (Llewellyn's Sourcebook Series) (Cunningham's Encyclopedia Series) will provide much more information than anything found in this text.Bottom line? Paula Brackston (The Winter Witch offers the saga of witch Bess who has lived through to the present day sequestering herself from the man responsible for her conversion to witchcraft. While all the scenarios presented--the 17th century, the Victorian Age, the WWI era and the present day are rich with ambiance, Brackston mistakenly repeats her premise with each reincarnation, converting her novel into something more akin to episodic television than a meaningful novel where the development of the main characters are crucial. Resorting to the same tired premise of wise women hunted down by vigilant townspeople intent on cruelty does not help to raise this novel out of the realm of mediocrity. While Brackston's "Winter Witch" delivered a more nuanced story, both "The WItch's Daughter" and it rely on too many stereotypical characters to make the readings memorable. What a book! This is a terrific tale and one you will remember: and one that you will take with you. I'm reading my way through this entire collection, and I love it! You will love Elizabeth, she is a heroine that will stay with you. Her courage, her honesty, and the moral strength she demonstrates time and time again, regardless of provocation: is just incredible. Beautifully, written.........this book is a treasure. I love "The Witch's Daughter." When I've finished with this collection will I fall into a Book Hole?

The Witch's Daughter isn't some epic fairy tale told over many lifetimes. It's not a drama-filled, romance story that will twist your heart in knots. But it will still leave you a little bit breathless.Elizabeth is just a girl when she loses her father, brother, and little sister to the plague. When she becomes sick, her mother does what any mother in her situation would do; save her last remaining child's life through any means necessary. She goes to Gideon and it is his teaching ways and power that saves Elizabeth's life, but at a huge cost. It is this action that starts Elizabeth on her journey through time, always looking over her shoulder for the one who wants to own her, yet trying to build a life wherever she can.The book is told through two perspectives: the journal entries in The Book of Shadows and as Elizabeth telling Teagan stories. This isn't distracting at all and only makes the story more inviting, in my opinion. The Book of Shadows is written in the present time. It talks of Elizabeth's life now and her interactions with Teagan. She is teaching Teagan the ways of the hedge witch and in doing so, allows herself to feel for another person; something she hasn't done in many, many years.The rest of the novel is about Elizabeth's many lives, from treating prostitutes in Jack the Ripper's London to the war front of World War I. She is helping as many people as she can wherever she lives, trying to stay out of Gideon's path, trying to save herself from becoming his. She tries to avoid magic whenever she can, as using her magic calls Gideon to her.It is a special kind of heartbreaking to see Elizabeth go through so many lives, trying to not form attachments, yet yearning to find someone to love her. She knows any bonds she forms will be broken when the other person dies, but solitary life isn't good for anyone and Elizabeth's heartbreak hurt to read.The ending of the novel is exactly what I wanted, and yet I wish there was just a little bit more. Not because the novel needed more, but because I wanted to know more.The Witch's Daughter isn't a romance. It isn't an action novel. It isn't a drama. It's a historical fiction novel that has a little bit of everything. I'm glad I decided to pick this book up and look forward to reading more from Brackston.

The book is a fast read, and having just finished it, I feel I have a much more solid idea of how, where, and why doing too much to defend yourself can be as dangerous as doing too little.I should add that in the course of addressing the ins and outs of legal self-defense claims, and how getting them wrong can put you in prison or in the ground, the authors have also managed to put together a good primer on different types of violence (social, asocial resource predators, asocial process predators) and on various cost-effective counters.If you’ve invested significant time and money in self-defense training, whether empty-handed or with weapons, I’d strongly recommend that you spend a few more bucks and a few more hours reading this book. Any self-defense system that doesn’t integrate the concepts MacYoung and Meek cover will be dangerously incomplete. It would be a shame to figure that out when it’s too late—especially when you have the opportunity to figure it out so easily right now.

My husband, Liam Jackson, a noted federal "counter-terrorism SME (subject matter expert) purchased this book for me and insisted I read it. Although he is an author and therefore knows many others, he seldom recommends books for me. I suspected there would be something special about this piece and it didn't disappoint. Mr. MacYoung and Mrs. Meek have written a book that should be on a shelf in every home in the U.S. The subject of violence (and it's myriad of consequences) can be overwhelming in it's complexities. This important work dispels many myths and cuts through the murk associated with the issues of "before, during, and after." Highly recommended.J.S. Jackson, Psy Ph.D

This book teaches a lot about self defense law and what is needed to avoid legal trouble as a result of getting into a self defense incident but it fails to have as it's primary focus escaping safely and neutralizing the attacker. You can't win a streetfight or ambush attack with a halfhearted effort second-guessing your intent through fearing to go to jail for hurting and injuring the assailant too severely. In reality, there are only two options in self defense after the conflict cannot be avoided: non-lethal force and lethal force. Having about 30 fights in the street and elsewhere in my lifetime, it is too dangerous to hold back and not give it your all in a real fight, no matter what the consequences are for the attacker. As Mike Serr said: "You can always talk your way through the court system but if your family is burying you in the casket at the cemetery, you are done talking." Therefore, do whatever is necessary to escape safely with little regard to the assailant's safety except for the decision to use or not use lethal force. As Mark Slane said "They will eventually let you out of jail but you are in the grave for good". Many attackers "play for keeps" nowadays and focus on using lethal force against their victims so learn to read your opponent's intent. This book is primarily useful for avoiding danger and to adequately explain yourself to the police, not for being safer in assualts. It's best advice is for avoiding danger altogether.

While Marc MacYoung’s In the Name of Self-Defense is a definitive work on the topic, the shear volume of that book can deter some readers. Collaborating with Jenna Meek, MacYoung has overcome that potential obstacle with a book that is much more readily approached while still providing a substantial introduction to the non-physical components of self-defense – subjects that tend to receive no more than superficial consideration, if that, in most martial arts schools. While the content is critically important, it should also be noted that What You Don’t Know Can Kill You is a very enjoyable read. The MacYoung/Meek writing style is as thoroughly entertaining as it is informative and reinforces the accessibility of the book. What You Don’t Know Can Kill You is now required reading at my dojo.

I am a martial artist and school owner and have been practicing and teaching for about 25 years. I have been following Marc MacYoungs for quite some time and still picked up a lot of new things from this book!This should be required reading for anyone that claims to teach or traing in self-defense. Students looking for self-defense instruction should use it as a guidepost to determine if the school you are training it actually teaches self-defense, or just teaches you how to get yourself arrested or killed (as the title of this poke so directly points out).Thanks for putting this one out! I will be reading it again in a few months :)

I acknowledge that this book has several problems. The author uses many questionable resources (including a direct citation to Wikipedia, rather than the sources that were used on that Wikipedia page,) and does tend to go off on tangents related to sociopolitical issues without backing up her claims. I acknowledge that the lack of global female empowerment is tied in with industrialization, agriculture, and the problems of consumerism, but she should have tied these pieces together in her book rather than throwing them out to be interpreted without support.Having said that, this book does address many of the problems with the way that we eat and our industrialized food system as a whole. It goes over global problems of hunger, health, and nutrition, addresses why our morality may be flawed when considering whether or not to eat a plant-based diet, and discusses traditional cultures and foods and what we could learn from them. As a student concerned with environmental science, traditional ecological knowledge, and resource management, I can appreciate the way that Keith brings together these ideas and supports the notion that we should eat a biologically-appropriate, regionally-responsible diet. Some may call it a flawed argument that appeals to nature, but this is also addressed within the text, again returning to some of the very successful indigenous peoples who have historically lived in great health due to their being removed from our industrialized food systems.I'm not giving this book four stars because I think it is perfect, because it isn't; I'm giving it four stars because I think that, for the average person seeking an introduction to our relationship with food around the world and in our modern society, it is a pleasant read with generally-acceptable arguments, despite some of their flawed sources. Of course, it could definitely be improved. Keith uses many arguments that need further support, or just plain better support from more appropriate resources. However, the book is pleasing to read, her writing style is enjoyable, and her general sentiments would be well-supported if she only used the right resources, and more of them. Being an academic, I understand the importance of using quality resources and research to support your position, but I also know that every paper, book, and article will always be biased or flawed based on the author's intentions; that's the point of creating an argument. This is expected in anything you read or hear.Because I can acknowledge the flaws, and because I'm aware of many other resources which echo her thoughts, I am comfortable with the general takeaway of Keith's work: our current food system is not working, our health needs to be improved through changes to how we eat, and morality goes beyond what we might immediately like to see or think about. The book and writing style are enjoyable, the sentiment and presentation are good, I just wish that she'd taken more care with her research and forming her arguments.

I think that a lot of bad reviews on this book are written by misguided Vegans who haven't read the book and don't understand what the purpose is.This book is meant to critique the underpinnings of Veganism - and address whether the assertions they make about a Vegan diet being healthiest for humanity and the environment are true.They are not.Because of the angle - she does not spend a lot of time addressing the diet itself - because she is trying to get the reader to look at the bigger picture. She is trying to get the point across that Veganism is not a sustainable lifestyle. It depends on Plant Ag which requires the destruction of ecosystems, and the soil - which, by definition, cannot be sustained.I think it's a very insightful book. It reminds me a lot of the Social Critique and Philosophy books I read while in college. Another similar book is Collapse by Jared Diamond.

Pierre Keith writes in this book, The Vegetarian Myth, about her journey from vegan to meat eater and what she has learned along the way. She writes about discovering the truth about agriculture and the death toll required to grow the plants the vegans eat, and the destruction of life, soil and the planet. She states it took a long time for her to understand that the moral choice that needed to be made wasn't as simple as "Life or Death" ......Because in order to eat, something MUST die. Whether through the killing of animals for meat, or the killing of animals through the deforestation of agriculture for food crops. Life requires death to sustain it. It's a circle. A cycle. A symbiotic relationship. A relationship she didn't want to acknowledge, and hadn't been previously taught. It wasn't part of her moral or political belief system. It held no place in her sincerely held ideology/worldview. She named this newfound understanding and acceptance, "Adult Knowledge". This as opposed to the simple, childlike understanding she previously had of a simple moral choice of " Life or Death" (with the choice of "Life" being that nothing has to die). That option doesn't actually exist. Eventually "Adults" have to face facts. The in depth information she details as she explains these ideas in her book is fabulous. Well written and thoughtful.But she stops there. And that is the problem. She doesn't extend her understanding of "Adult Knowledge" any further into her preconceived moral and political ideology. She runs off course when she starts talking about "toxic masculinity" affecting the environment . About how men use and abuse women and the environment. It becomes clear that she still can't see the whole truth. There is no such thing as toxic masculinity, just as there is no such thing as toxic femininity. Sure .... I could try to make a point proving toxic femininity exists. I could point to the feminization of the men in our society to the point where the men no longer feel the moral burning desire to protect and defend their women, their wives, their children and their country. Like the song says .... where have all the cowboys gone?? I could say the feminization of the men in our world has taken a toxic toll on our society. But I would not advocate for that point either. Because just like the choice has never been "Life or Death", the choice has never been "Male or Female". Just like there is a circle, a cycle, a symbiotic relationship in nature, there is the same in our relationship as men and women. We compliment and provide for each other in a symbiotic way. Lierre Keith asks in this book, "when will women grow tired of letting men use them for sons ...and cooking and cleaning". Gee , I don't know Lierre ... when will men grow tired of letting women use them to provide protection, provision and defense (even giving their very lives as soldiers ... a term she uses in derision) in sacrifice to the women and children of society? Huh? When is giving their life not enough? Why should men put up with it? Why should women put up with it? Because Lierre, it's a symbiotic relationship. A circle. A cycle. Men protect, provide and defend the women, and the women care for the men and raise the next generation of children. The belief in toxic masculinity is still childlike. She has yet to accept the hard truth ..... that masculinity and femininity are not an either/or choice. Masculinity is good .... very good. Femininity is good ...very good. This understanding is politically incorrect but it's the truth. It is understanding and wisdom. And it's desperately needed right now. When we value each other's differences, and celebrate our unique strengths and the perfect harmony of the give-and-take of everything in life, we grow not just in our personal wisdom, but we expand the peace, love and understanding in our hearts.

Very honest and well researched. Gives the reader an opportunity to examine the mainstream beliefs about how our food is produced. If animal products aren't used in the commercial production of our food, then petroleum products are. Well written.

It has so many heartwarming characters, a delightful village community, members of the nobility and even rock stars!Skye is a caring young lady. She helped bring up her younger sister and looked after their landlord, Norman, until he sadly died. Now she's following his final wishes and visiting Willow Tree Hall in Cranley and the Harris family but she's not sure why!Her introduction to the family starts with her backing the huge caravan she's towing over a vintage car. However, despite this inauspicious start, she's definitely in for some shocks and surprises as she gets to know just what Norman has left her, connects with the family and community and discovers more about herself, her talents and a heartwarming romance!It was great to visit this family again- and just in time to find out more about their struggles to save the Hall, wedding preparations and the festivities. I believe it could be read as a stand-alone but that it is even better if you've read the previous book first as it continues on from it and involves many of the same characters. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the series. The author has created characters who are believable and easy to relate to, especially because of their flaws, worries and problems. I loved how both Will and Skye re-evaluated their individual goals, desires, beliefs and plans as the story progresses. It is a great contemporary romance and I have no hesitation in highly recommending it.I requested and was gifted a copy of this book via NetGalley. This is my honest review after choosing to read the book.

Skye has been caring for her younger sister, Summer, since she was 11 or 12 years old. Their mother disappeared. But, the girls were fortunate enough to live with Norman. Norman was an elderly man who rented rooms in his home. When he developed more health issues, Skye took care of him along with her sister.Norman has died and left his books to Summer. Skye, has inherited his beloved Airstream trailer. He also left a letter telling her to go to Willow Tree Hall where he has another surprise for her.It seems she owns half of a lodge. It needs work and it comes with the owner of the other half of the lodge, Will. Will is part of the family who own Willow Tree Hall. There is the elderly earl, his sister, and Sam, the future earl and Will's older brother, along with Sam's fiancee, Annie. This is a family.Will has lived a life away from his family, but conditions have now brought him home, at least for a time. He has been a playboy in the eyes of the tabloids. He has moved from place to place, because that is what he liked. He has kept himself away.When Skye accidentally parks her Airstream on top of his Aston Martin, Will does not become a fan of Skye. But, the rest of the family are delighted to have Skye there for as long as she would like to stay.Slowly, Skye gets an up close and personal view of family life. She is reminded of her past and all the things which were never a part of her life. She was not allowed to be anything but a caregiver. She never learned to be comfortable making choices which would give her joy. Basically, she has no knowledge of joy.Will has grown up with his grandfather. Because of the loss of his parents, Will has kept himself separate from anyone, including his family. He has not invested his time or his money to help keep the estate in the black. Now, things are not going well financially.This is a lovely holiday story. Yes, things fall into place more easily than they would in real life. But, this is not real life, it is a charming story about hope, learning to trust and to love.Skye and Will are really terrific people who have put their lives on the wrong tracks. Each of them are capable of living lives which are much more than they have allowed.There is humor , character, as well as heart in the story. Both the main characters as well as secondary characters add wonderful depth to the plot. The family members are supportive and caring.This is part of a series and I have not read any of the earlier books. I had no problem understanding events and relationships. Ms Sherlock has done a good job of providing the reader with a good path to follow.We see love blossom between 2 individuals. But there is also love of family and love between friends. The texture of the story is filled with warmth.Ms Sherlock is a new author for me. I have enjoyed this story very much. I will look for more of her books.I received this book from the publisher through NetGalley. I am voluntarily writing this review and all opinions are completely my own.

I read this book in one day. It took me away and made me want to keep reading. My favorite parts were all the activities happening around the house-wedding planning, Christmas, and fixing up the lodge. I actually enjoyed the family dynamics more than the romance. The 2 main characters start out opposites-one very selfish and the other very self sacrificing, but after circumstances keep bring them together, they of course find HEA.

This is the third book in the series but I think it reads fine as a stand alone.I love this author’s writing style and she gets a great flow in her books that make them very easy to read – and this one was delightful.The characters are well developed and I really enjoyed getting to know them as the story progressed. I warmed to them straightaway and they really made the book special.4.5 stars from me rounded up to 5 stars for Goodreads and Amazon – very highly recommended and I am really looking forward to reading what she releases next!

A nice romantic comedy about finding joy in life. A story to take you out of the everyday. I enjoyed it while reading it but it wasn't unforgettable. I wanted to love it more but it just didn't move me enough. I could, however, see others really enjoying it and I would still recommend it.

This is the gold standard for learning about Improv comedy. For additional appeal, there are stories are from the legends in modern comedy. Surprisingly, 'Truth' is easy to read, and organized. The first half is dedicated to scenes and basics of short form, the second half builds to performing a Harold. Harold is the 'format' for long form Improv which is the grand contribution of the authors to comedy. All of the Improv instruction that I have read, refer to this book and/or Del Close.

I've taken two improv classes and I really enjoyed it! The problem is that sometimes you might not understand what an instructor is trying to get across to you because you are so nervous. The class environment is high- energy and if you have anxiety in this kind of a situation, like I do sometimes, then this book is a must when you are away from the class. I have the UCB comedy workbook, which I highly recommend. I would recommend getting this manual, if you buy nothing else. 'Truth in Comedy' simply,and clearly, heads you in the right direction right away; at least it did for me. Actually you are probably better off in buying whatever combination of improv guides which you choose. If you are planning on taking an improv class; get this book and read it first or in conjunction with the class. The more of the book that you get through while you are in the early stages of the class, the better. I had an "idea" of what improv was before I took the class, and I ended up being wrong about what I thought. This will act as a kind of compass for you; so that if you have an instructor who is not so good, or she or he is simply working against the time constraints of the class, you can get the most out of it. Believe me, I am a somewhat introverted person, and I thoroughly enjoy improv. I can't explain why I would like being up on a stage making an ass out of myself in a fun way, more than I would having attention paid to me in any other situation. Give improv a shot, it is exhilarating and rewarding!

Although there are a lot of great points in here for anyone doing improv, it fell a bit short for me in expectation. Now I have run improv extensively in my life for the last 24 years and this book, it does have good value. There is a lot of commentary of who the movers and shakers were back in the day and why the Herald is so great. These things are all good but I was looking for something sharing the spotlight with many different insights to the improv world. After all there are many great things out there to explore! This is a decent book to have in a collection but by no means should be the only one in the collection!

This book was a quick, entertaining and interesting read. Lots of interesting vignettes, perhaps too many name-dropping anecdotes. It is well written section by section, but not well organized, the flow of argument is not so clear. Perhaps it it deliberately written in the style of a Harold?I did not read it to learn how to do improv comedy, I read it for insights into group improvisation that might transfer to playing music. In this it was somewhat disappointing. Compare to say, Zen and the Art of Archery, which is a book about archery the lessons of which transfer to other activities.Improv games contained therein may be good fodder for amusement on long car journeys - better than "I spy".

Truth in Comedy starts off with a rather immodest amount of name dropping and self congratulating, but after those first few chapters, things take off.The book is intended to be a rough guide to teaching and performing "Harold," the signature improvisation form of the Improv Olympic theater in Chicago. While the text focuses heavily on the structure of the form, it also holds page after page of advice and tools for any improviser or actor. The lessons in agreement, trust (in yourself and others), and teamwork can be used in any improv form (shortform or longform). And it definitely can teach us actors a thing or two about performing a scripted show.One of my few complaints about the book is it lacks concreteness. The author alludes to the phenomenon of group mind, the beauty of connections, and the wonder of "finding Harold." Despite giving examples, the reader is left with a "you had to be there" feeling, which, unfortunately, I don't think there's a way around. Harold is very much a "you had to be there" experience for both audience and performer. It's difficult to capture in words and in print the joy of seeing a spontaneous occurrence that takes both the performer and audience by complete surprise. I've found myself frequently recounting shows I've seen to uninterested or confused expressions, while the night before I was doubled over in laughter.So, to sum it all up, if you're interested in learning Harold (especially if you're a student at the Improv Olympic) or picking up some very useful improv tools, give this book a gander. And if you have an old copy lying around, take another look. It's rare that I open this without finding something to inspire me or pull me out of an improv rut.

I've just begun Improv Classes here in NYC with Armando Diaz. He recomended this as a sorta read along textbook for our class. It does drop a lot of names in a very proud fashion, which is annoying, but it has all the games you'll need to begin. It contains a very solid wholistic concept to "The Harold". . .Improv's leading long-form style. So, if you are an actor, improver, beginner or just wanna get a group together in class or office to play games. Pickup this book and learn the basics. Then get in class and have a pro temper you towards the next level. . .but I recommend IMPROVISE by Mick Napier, as a much better solid book.

Great short guide for improv. Read it before you take a class. Then read it again after.... It's a smaller book.

I found a slight tinge of name-dropping throughout the book, "You should try these techniques used by successful people!" However, the book had good information on techniques really used in improv schools, and more than a few philosophical twists, as the techniques are put to the test. A good read for the student or writer of theatrical comedy.
