In the spirit of full disclosure, the author is a dear friend of mine. Dave has been wanting to sail around the world for as long as I have known him. I have been waiting impatiently to read this book ever since he mentioned he might write it. So, when I got “Spirit of a Dream†in the mail yesterday, I just meant to take a peek at it before I went to bed. I read a couple of chapters and then foolishly tried to go to sleep. Even knowing that Dave got home safe, I couldn’t rest without reading until the very end. I also grew up near living near Lake Michigan. The sound of the waves calms me and centers me. I sailed a bit when I was a kid, but I never wanted to get so far out in the water that I couldn’t see land. And yet, I loved this vicarious trip around the world. I am envious of Dave’s encounters with dolphins and whales and the mysterious glowing orbs. I want to go to New Zealand, now, more than ever. Sometimes I am anxious reading a fictional book when the main character that I care about is in danger. In this case the adventures are real. Fortunately, I know that Dave and Bodacious Dream made it home, so I got through the scary bits. You don’t have to be a sailor to appreciate this book. â€Spirit of a Dream" is more than one man's adventure, it is a challenge to follow our own dreams.
Spirit of a Dream transports you on a solo circumnavigation in a 40-foot dream machine aptly named Bodacious Dream along with Otto and Franklin. I loved the book and made myself slow down so I didn’t read it all at once and plan to read it again to my grandkids. Skipper, Dave Rearick takes you on an exciting once in a lifetime adventure and you will not be disappointed! Dave’s story is raw, engaging and heart pounding at times as his prose comes alive on the pages with detailed insight into what it’s really like to sail alone on a 256-day odyssey. You will feel like I did, that you are right there on the deck of Bo with the wind blowing 40 knots and your hand on the tiller. Celebrate what’s for dinner, honor Neptune as you cross the equator, calculate out the distance, wind speed and when that next storm is going to hit and troubleshoot all the unknowns of sailing solo in the vast sea. Be prepared for the unexpected!Dave is a gifted writer who not only describes his many experiences, thoughts and feelings while sailing Bo but shares the grandeur, wonder and history of touring Cape Town the week after Mandela died, hiking the dwindling glacier in New Zealand, snorkeling in the Galapagos Islands and finally navigating through the Panama Canal. Grab some dark chocolate Hersey’s Kisses and take the time to read Spirit of a Dream. You are in for a rare treat sailing with Dave and experiencing his soul’s journey to fulfill his childhood dream. While Spirit is a testament to Dave’s avid passion for sailing, it is clear he is also a passionate advocate and steward of the sea and this beautiful planet Earth. Highly recommend!
In his book "Spirit of a Dream", author Dave Rearick, allowed me to partake in a remarkable true-life personal journey and adventure that most people would never imagine attempting, let alone actually completing.“Spirit of a Dream†is much more than just a simple story about someone sailing around the world solo. It provides the reader with insight into Dave’s mind of why accomplishing his dream was so important to him. Reading this incredible story puts you right there with Dave as he sails the world’s immense oceans alone for over nine months. “Spirit of a Dream†manages to get your heart racing when the unexpected goes wrong, and life or death decisions become his immediate reality. Dave’s respect for the oceans and the world’s environment shows throughout this book and greatly reinforced my respect for such a dedicated, caring and resourceful person.I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys escaping into an incredible true-life story that will whisk you away on an adventure that will spark your interest. Dave Rearick reveals himself to be an amazing writer, and his perspective on life and our fragile world provides us all with something important to think about. Dave also manages to raise our consciousness about what our world and the oceans need from all of us.Thank you, Dave, for sharing your journey, the challenges it brought, and your personal experiences in making it all happen.
I’ve met Dave and sailed his home waters on southern Lake Michigan for over 25 years, and knew about his dream many years ago. Even before his solo round the world, he was an accomplished sailor. I’d also read several sailing articles he’d written over the years before Bo - his writing is thoughtful, humorous and engaging. So I was delighted to follow his solo around the world with Bo, Otto & Franklin in real time. And even more anxious to read the book! It’s the story of one mans ultimate sailing adventure. If you’re a sailor, especially with any experience long distance sailing, you won’t be able to put the book down. You will feel like you’re sailing around the world, bored and exhilarated, exhausted and energized, with lower lows and higher highs than most of us ever face. But the way Dave weaves in his observations on living a well examined life make the journey and this book far more meaningful. I read 174 pages in my first sitting. The book reawakened some deeper thoughts in me, for that I am grateful. Dave has led a fuller, more aware life than most people, and that’s evident in this book - nowhere more than in the epilogue, but DON’T skip ahead!A wonderful book, by a remarkable human being. Cheers Dave!
Rearick's book, "Spirit of a Dream" is well written and a compelling read. It is difficult to put down in following him on his search for peace and answers sailing around the world. Not overly technical, this book can appeal to the sailor and land-lubber alike. Thoughtful, revealing, poetic and at time spiritual the reader is given a peek inside the mind of a solo sailor's highs and lows and inevitable connection to his craft, the oceans, and nature as any sailor venturing off-shore finds in sailing long stretches of the world's oceans. Highly recommend this book for anyone curious about sailing and adventure.
