This book helped my son understand that he is not the only one with withholding problems...however it is a little wordy and loses his attention probably 1 out of every 3 times we read it.Overall, if you have a child with bowel movement problems, I would recommend you purchase this book for them.
We have had a year of pooping problems that seemed to just be getting worse and worse. It would consume an entire day or two once it became too hard to hold it anymore. Even then we would spend hours back and forth on the potty with tears, tummy aches, crying, bargaining, bribing, apologies, promises, several icky "accidents," a painful irritated bum, and finally a poo that was bigger than anyone else's in our house - by far!!! Our very smart, headstrong 3-1/2 yr old was on day 4 since her last BM when this book arrived in the mail. We read it together and talked about the little boy in the story along the way. She and "Ryan" are very similar! She completely understood the analogy of "cleaning out the trash" and really liked the diagrams. She declared herself the "boss of her body" and tried again on the potty with some success! A couple hours later her tummy ache was back as was the all too familiar look of panic... so we read the book again... and she marched into the bathroom (by herself because she could do it!) and was completely successful!!! Everyone in the house celebrated with her and she put a little purple star on her calendar to track her progress (after doing a hilarious "I'm the boss of my body" dance around the house). Then, we went to the store and she picked out foods that help to make softer poops. I think the most amazing part of this book is that it acknowledges the fear/pain that some kids experience with BMs and takes their desire to control their body and educates and empowers them into having a more functional / productive control over themselves and the process. I would recommend this book to anyone who's kiddo hold it, fights the process, or is just plain scared to go. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS BOOK!!!
I'm totally impressed with this book. I bought this book after about 2 months of fighting my newly potty trained 2 1/2 year old to poop on the potty rather than in her undies. Don't get me wrong, she'd try but she was too scared to actually go- every poop was rare, and a fight that would end in tears and pooped undies. I got this book in a little bit of desperation, we read it twice to my poor constipated preschooler, and now she "reads" it to herself at least once a day. Since reading this book I've gotten her to go potty at her grandma's house, and all I have to do is say "will you please try and go poop for me?" AND SHE GOES!!!! I'm still in awe. She's so proud of herself, and of course since shes less constipated its much less scary and the cycle continues for good. I'm a happy mom with no poopy undies for almost two weeks now. She's a happy kiddo with a less grumpy belly. High Praise all around.
This book is just OK. It is a little wordy and long for a preschooler. I also found the doctor character's story a little difficult for a child to connect to. She tells Ryan (her patient who is afraid to poop) a long-winded tale of a fox who grows up, moves out on his own, and stops taking care of his house. His parents come to visit him and are disappointed that his house is filled with trash, which motivates him to clean up and take control of his life again. The doctor then transitions back to her patient and explains how poop is the trash our body doesn't need and how we have to let it out. I have no problem with that, but couldn't the fox have been a kid with a messy room that needed to be cleaned? Most children listening to this story aren't going to connect to a messy grownup who lives on their own. I think the author almost had a hit with this one.
EDIT: Okay, I had to edit this post because literally the next day, my son had no problems with pooping - no buildup, no fear, NOTHING, and he says it's because the book helped! This is a kid who would cry and run around the room, desperately trying to hold the poop back. This book is magic. LOLI have an advanced toddler (already completed 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten at 2.5 years old), so the wordiness wasn't the problem. The content of the words, however, seemed too advanced for him. For example, they took about using pull-ups once in a while if you're afraid to poop on the potty, but my son isn't using the potty yet. He's terrified of pooping in his pull-up, let alone on the potty. So this is definitely better geared toward young children, not toddlers.
My husband and I don’t know how this worked but it did! Our daughter was fully potty trained and about two months ago she became afraid to poop in the potty. We tried everything between asking doctors and her daycare providers but we were all stumped! We’ve tried bribing her with toys, ice cream... everything! Yet, nothing! She loves books so we started looking for a poop book and found this one. Seriously, the first time we read it to her she ran to the potty and pooped! She has pooped in the potty every day since with no accidents! None! She has no problems using public restrooms or going in other bathrooms anymore either.Again, we don’t know how this worked (the story is extremely weird) but as the reviews say... it seems to work for little ones!!!! Two moths of regression literally ended the first time reading this!
