Brenda Ann Kenneally is a mother, teacher, multiplatform documentarian, Guggenheim Fellow, Pulitzer Prize nominee, and formerly incarcerated youth. Over the past thirty years, Kenneally’s long-form, immersive projects have produced visceral portraits of the personal experiences of disadvantaged children in America, as well as a ground-up historic record of contemporary social and political values in the United States. “I take pictures to remember what I’ve learned while I was busy taking pictures,” says Kenneally. For over a decade she obsessively documented the universe of a community of people as they were born and died, fell in love, broke up, were broken, and healed. Her photographs take on a whole other level of meaning as she sets them against gorgeous historical material showing the development of Troy, NY which was a beacon of middle class wealth in the Industrial Age. By telling the stories of the people she photographs she has entered their experience into the historical record and documented what the decimation of the middle class has left in its wake. This is a rare and important book--it should be read and taught and learned from.

This is a wonderful book because I taught in Troy and know some of these girls.

Disappointed it wouldn't work on my Kindle. Content not at all what I expected. Primitive, scrapbook-type pages. Returned for refund.

Beautiful photos capture the history of Troy during its heyday as booming industrial giant and the following descent into a near abandoned city rife with poverty- and the experience of what is it to be a girl in modern times, growing up in very trying circumstance. Beautifully pieced together and incredibly revealing, this book tugs at the heartstrings and reveals a softer side to those just trying to thrive in cyclical poverty and dysfunction. I live not far at all from Troy and understand the dynamic of the city on many levels- but never really knew the history , having heard vague stories of the glory of industrial Troy and it’s decline- this book is a wonderful reminder that everyone has a story and a name and we all are just trying to make it through the best we can. I really enjoyed this snapshot of the city just over the bridge.

As a former resident of Troy, birth to 17 years (1945 to 1962), this book has special significance for me. The work is a several hundred page reminiscence for me. I lived in a working class family, in a neighborhood where people like the ones described lived and it made me wonder what became of their lives. Quite possibly many turned out like the ones portrayed in the book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who lived in Troy from its glory days in the early '50's to the very sad place it became in the early '60's and beyond. I recently visited the city and was quite happy to see that life had returned, not quite the Troy of my youth, but well off the bottom.

This is a unique work of art by a woman who was an UPSTATE GIRL. Raw, compassionate and rare --she puts the legacy of poverty, addiction, and post-industrial wreckage in perspective. Your heart will break. A stunning achievement.
