I gave my 6-year-old daughter, who has been taking piano lessons for almost 2 years, this book as a part of Christmas gifts. I had a high expectation before the book arrived since I read the great reviews on this book. It arrived with a very tiny dent on one corner of the book, but that didn't bother me enough to return it.The day after Christmas, my daughter and I read it together, and I was so thrilled to find out that this book was actually beyond my expectation! The size of the book is bigger than I thought and it's already fun just to look at the beautiful pictures, but the wording, the story, and everything about this book was so perfect that we both were quickly drawn into it!My daughter had already been in love with the piano and practicing hard everyday, however, after we read this book, I feel that she respects and appreciates the instrument even more.I would recommend this book to everyone (any age, probably from 5 to adult).If you or your child play the piano, you will definitely love it!!

Well-written story about Cristofori and the beginnings of the forte-piano, precursor to the piano. Beautiful watercolor illustrations! Great background for older children and adults of the research and discoveries of the author in creating the book!

This book had lots of interesting details and history woven into the storyline, making it a great book for your elementary piano students.

My Study on Picture Books

We are not a very musical family so I had never heard of Bartolomeo Cristofori before and frankly I never even thought to wonder about where a piano got its name. I do however, love children’s picture books especially picture book biographies so I checked this out of the library. This book absolutely floored me. I loved it and so did my daughter!I do not think I have ever read such a well-researched, children’s picture book. Rusch includes in the end pages a break down of the book page-by-page and what primary and occasionally secondary resources she used. On almost every page, she also includes in a smaller font a quote from a primary source. Rusch made learning the difference between a primary and a secondary source so accessible to my 8-year-old. We discussed why something was a primary source each time we read the quotes. After finishing the book, I found a worksheet on the internet about primary and secondary sources and my daughter aced it! Great learning there!When I started the book, I thought this was going to be more of a biography of an artist and craftsman but really this is a book about a scientist, creativity, and the scientific method. Cristofori had a question; could he make a keyboard instrument capable of making soft sounds (piano sounds like a clavichord) and loud sounds (forte sounds like a harpsichord). He then began thinking of different ways he could accomplish this and experimenting with different materials. That is science at its best!We also went to the internet to listen to music from a clavichord, a harpsichord, and a replica of Cristofori’s pianoforte. Fun, but great learning too as my daughter and I came up with a list of comparisons and contrasts of these instruments ranging from the way they look to the way they sound.Throughout the book, Rusch uses dynamic musical notations to annotate the action - pianissimo, crescendo, forte, fortissimo, decrescendo, mezzo piano, mezzo forte, morendo, dal niente, molto crescendo. Wow! A non-musician like me even learned a lot!Finally, I would be remiss if I did not mention the amazing illustrations. The book is as beautiful as it is informative. Marjorie Priceman did an outstanding job of bringing pianissimo and fortissimo and everything in between to life!This book has an age range listed from 4-8 years old but I completely disagree. I think even older elementary school kids would enjoy this and learn a lot. In fact, the ATOS reading level is 5.9 suggesting the level of a 5th grader at the end of the year. That said, I think the younger set will love this as well. This book has something for nearly everyone, the budding scientist, budding musician, budding artist, and budding journalist. It is enough to make a parent’s heart sing!

Life lives on through music as Elizabeth Rusch inspires those new to music, professional musicians and we who appreciate the sustaining power of music with this "Life". Liz's symbolic use of composers' terms for volume for performance symbolize, too, the curiosity about the "the sound" of the pianoforte. When the musicians can't imagine the possibilities of new sound, the illustration (all so good) of the cat playing the piano says a lot. A a frequent visitor to Florence and student of the Medici, I can smell and hear the streets of the city as well as hear the sounds. The bibliography and research of original sources, chronological notes are most admirable. Everyone will enjoy this great contribution to music and to life.

I cannot find any positive perspective through the book.

I was compelled to stop and write a quick review even though I am only 6 pages into the book. I may amend this later, but I just have to say, I have been studying Six Sigma for 4 months preparing for my green belt test, and I'm really struggling to understand the statistics concepts. This is very sad, because I actually did great in my college statistics class.Back to the book; I am 6 pages into this book and I FINALLY get an explanation of Process Sigma Level that makes perfect sense. For me, it is really hard to understand how to do something if I don't know the "why" behind it. I finally got that today.I actually have hope I might pass this test now. Thank you, Warren Brussee.

As a Lean Practitioner I find the Six Sigma sometimes quite overwhelming and extensive. But here you have a book, that talks from the horses mouth, from a guy who has been in the trenches and used Six Sigma as it is is supposed to. You don't need fancy statistical programs - just you common sense and an Excel spreadsheet. I will definitely begin using Six Sigma tools more in my projects without bothering everybody else to understand the tools. I defintely recommend this book - you'll find it applicable right away I think.

I gave it four stars because we used this as the required text for our last batch of business process green belts. The technical level was just about right for that group. I would not recomend it for black belts who will be doing more technical manufactucturing / quality/ product performance / design projects. I would rate it one or two stars for that. You could use for more technical black belts but I think you would want to follow up with a text that goes deeper into more complex statistical and logical tools.

Simplified, actionable ways to look at processes and data. Intro to when and how to use certain tools. Reviews calculations and terminology. I have a cssgb primer. I'd read this then I'd be able to follow those sections of the primer.

Interesting and very useful

Like the title says "Made Easy" and easy it is.

I read this book hoping to get an idea of the practice of medicine through the eyes of some mid-nineteenth century physicians. With the goal of researching my own historical book, I tried to understand the process of diagnosis and treatment of common diseases the pioneer doctor faced. I liked the writing which flowed well and kept interest with examples and period anecdotes. The course of the book seemed to pass from one physician or practitioner anecdote to the next and, for my purposes, lacked the degree of organization that I required to et a solid notion of diagnosis and treatment during this period. I enjoyed reading the book but was disappointed in the lack of medical details and in the way the book was organized.

My grandmother saw this book at her doctor's office and was upset that she had to quit reading it when they finally called her back. I ordered it for her before she left the building. She loves this book!

Finally a biographical approach to real people . I am getting a real feel for the ancestors who now I care about.

Tremendous history.

"Frontier Medicine: from the Atlantic to the Pacific, 1492-1941" is a book which covers a much neglected part of the history of "the American West." It gives us a fascinating look at the earliest arrivals of Europeans to the shores of what later became the United States of America, and how the (often crude) medical skills of these pioneers, sometimes supplemented by herbal knowledge of the Indians, were used to treat injured or sick people.Reading this history about frontier medicine one wonders, not just at the almost total lack in that era of any medical knowledge about diseases and how to cure them and/or the way the human body works, but that so many people still managed to survive their treatments, often more deadly than the sicknesses they were suffering from.Especially to modern eyes, one shivers to think being visited by such a "medical professional" at ones sickbed, and being "treated" by bleeding, purging either by emetic or by enema, blistering, and/or medicines (those last often with ingredients that we would consider poison today) to get the "humors" of the human body back in its proper balance. Or, for that matter, being wounded in battle because almost inevitably the wound would become infected (sanitation was almost unheard off) and the only "remedy" was amputation of that body-part - which most didn't survive.Anyway, in "Frontier Medicine" we get an excellent overview of the very different groups of people who "came west". We start out with the Spanish, who arrived first in the Americas and who were later followed by the English and the French. The European medical knowledge of that time is covered, and how this was implemented by the pioneers and sometimes improved on by things learned from interactions with the Indians.We learn how the fur traders and trappers, sometimes for weeks or months alone in a vast wilderness, treated themselves when they became injured. Sometimes showcasing their immense hardiness as in the case of Hugh Glass, who was mauled by a bear and left for dead by his fellow travelers when he went into a coma, but recovered and literally crawled his way to survival (having used maggots to eat out the infection out of the wound on his back). We get treated to the story of the immigrants on the Oregon Trail and how they treated those who became ill or injured during their travels to the Californian gold fields; how the soldiers who served at isolated outposts during the Indian Wars were taken care off; how on homesteads, ranches and in the early western towns the first doctors started practicing their medical profession and how they treated their patients (and how they were paid).The Civil War is covered, and shows us the horrors of warfare and its impact on the swamped medical services of that time, which were overloaded with patients. We learn how soldiers who survived the shock of being wounded and only hours or even days later being taken to the army hospital, their wounds almost inevitably having become infected, had to suffer the amputations of their infected limbs with no anesthetics to speak off (except a drink of whisky to dull the pain as the medic sawed and hacked to cut off the limb).We learn how midwives helped deliver babies in the colonial era and beyond, while more and more the medical profession worked to eliminate them by getting lawmakers in many states to require that anyone attending a woman in labor have formal medical training and be licensed (while females were denied medical training). And we are also told how the first women doctors started making their rounds; their struggle to become doctors immense, because they were often denied medical education and rejected at almost all the medical schools they applied to.Strangely, the part after 1900 is only covered in just one chapter, the last one named: "Into the twentieth century". In this last chapter he mentions: "The evidence is strong that 1941 marked the end of medicine's frontier period in America". This is supposedly the reason this book covers the period of 1492-1941. Okay, that may be so, but then Dary all but neglects to give us the evidence on which this is based.A point could be made that ending this book around the 1900's would make more sense, because around the 1900's there was no more "frontier" to discover; Alaska, "the last American frontier" was purchased in 1867 and the Klondike Gold Rush took place in 1898, which was one of the last periods there was massive "immigration", although these were mainly people just after the gold, no settlers who decided to stick around as most of the '49-ers did during the California gold rush.If for the sake of argument one extends the "frontier" period to 1941 like Dary does, then why is this not covered in much more detail? No mention is made of the Spanish-American war of 1898 in Cuba and the medical problems caused by treating injured and/or sick soldiers in an area know for its unhealthy climate and the many diseases. More soldiers were killed by diseases than by bullets or cannonballs. No mention is made of how, after the Spanish-American War, in 1900 major Walter Reed, M.D., headed the Yellow Fever Board which confirmed Cuban doctor Carlos Finley's theory that yellow fever is transmitted by mosquitoes.And amazingly, for a book covering the period up to 1941, the First World War is not covered at all, which had a major impact on medical care to wounded and/or maimed soldiers (or those suffering from poison gas attacks) and neither is the great Influenza Epidemic of 1918/1919.An argument could be made that he also should have covered the building of the Panama Canal, from the period the Americans took over. One of the major difficulties faced by the builders was that typhoid, dysentery, malaria, and yellow fever, among other diseases, often ravaged the workforce. It was not just the American mechanical and engineering technology that made it possible for it to finally be achieved, but most of all the amazing medical improvements (Dr. William Gorges!) that made it possible to continue building the Canal.He makes note of some military medical personnel being awarded the Medal of Honor. Great that he pays attention for this; but then he makes the, for an historian, inexplicable mistake of calling it the Congressional Medal of Honor. This is not correct; it is called the Medal of Honor. Now, often the general public and lots of politicians call it mistakenly the "Congressional" Medal of Honor, but any serious student of American (military) history knows that this is incorrect, caused because of its award by the Department of Defense "in the name of Congress." As a historian, David Dary should not have made this mistake.For the above mentioned reasons, I withdraw one star from this review; otherwise it is an excellent history on this much neglected part of America's frontier period that I recommend wholeheartedly to anyone interested in this subject.

I'm betwixt and between regarding `Frontier Medicine.' On the one hand, the author presents a fair amount of interesting information, particularly about the `practice' (which didn't make perfect) of medicine in the Old West, `patent' medicines, most of which were patently fraudulent, and the difficult course traveled by would-be female practitioners. On the other hand, he does so in a seemingly never-ending series of vignettes and mini-mini-biographies which tend to be repetitive and yet distressingly unsatisfying. Overall, I got the feeling, as with Emily Cockayne's `Hubbub,' that having unearthed the information in his research the author decided he should include it whether or not it really added to the narrative. On the whole, the book is probably worth the read, but you won't be missing all that much if you pass it by.

I bought this for a doctor friend. This is my second purchase of this same book. The first person I gave it to loved it.

Frontier Medicine: From the Atlantic to the Pacific, 1492-1941 This was a well written and researched book. Really fascinating to see how rudimentary early medicine was. Surprising the human race survived some of the barbaric practices. Interesting read!

After my husband purchased the book and suggested we do it together, I decided why not. He was offering to do the cooking, so I sat back and did what he told me to. I wasn't too thrilled with the idea, but since he did the hardwork, what could I lose? The first two days were bloody hell. I had body aches and fell like absolute crap! So I starting reading the book and found out this was called the "carb flu". Despite of doing the Paleo before and not having these symptoms (I chalk it up to having too much carb storage after the binge eating of the holidays), I decided to stick it out since Dr. Kellyann said this was normal and stay the course! So glad that I did! We have 9 days left of the 21 days and I feelamazing!!!! At first the broth was a little nasty to me, but now I love it. (A little bit of Crystal hot sauce helps me a ton!) The other day I had so much energy that I cleaned my house from top to bottom from the second I woke up to the moment I went to bed! It was crazy!!My kids told me yesterday when I walked through the door, "Whoa, Mom!! You've lost weight!" I was beaming!! My skin also looks great! (I had a brown sun spot downright disappear from my forehead! No joke!) The craziest thing is that I don't have sweet cravings anymore. I know I will be able to do the maintenance program, no problem. But I do miss my red wine! That's the hardest part. But my body needed the break from alcohol and sleep has never been better.Oh yeah!!! Get this! This diet has cured my husband's insomnia. I'm. Dead. Serious. He is hypoglycemic and would wake him up in the middle to eat and this diet has stabilized his blood sugars so he sleeps like a log. It's crazy to him! (His skin looks amazing too, by the way. He actually looks like he has a slight tan!I wish I would've taken before pictures. But honestly I didn't think I'd have these kind of results and I also didn't think I would able to stick to the diet 100%. But I have and I will for the next 9 days.So glad my husband bought this and "made" me do this diet!****Update. I have lost a total of 12 pounds!!!!! AND I have a week left!! I'm in shock!!! I can't begin to describe how great this diet is. I lost 15 lbs. On top of that this diet has cured my depression and anxiety, it's lowered my resting heart rate from 140 to 75, it's given me more energy than I can spend, and it's made me sleep more soundly than I've ever slept. I used to have no energy for working out but now I have so much energy that I WANT to exercise to burn it off! Unlike other diets I've tried, this one makes me want to stay on it forever. I just feel so GOOD. It's incredible how much your diet impacts so many aspects of your health.

This book is not only informative but I believe has the answers to my inflammation problems...I am glad I found it and since I had been following the broth lifestyle, I am not only feeling better, but my awful asthma cough has subsided considerably.

Awesome on day 16 and have been dropping weight like crazy.. my wife said I look years younger lol I'm a health nut but can go off the reservation a little.. this has been easy to do. I have found way through her book to get pass my cravings.. this diet shocked me on the results so far. I have been on many low or no carb diets but this one is the best.

My wife over did this program. She stayed on the diet for 13 months, sticking pretty close to the program described. There is a good reason to pay attention to the 21 days printed on the cover. My wife is now recovering from a bad case of "Keto Flu", she depleted her electrolytes and almost lost touch with reality. 21 days every six months is probably OK, but keep real close track of things.

I am a 65 year old guy who is about 60# overweight. I bought this book and used it as Dr. Kellyann suggests. Without any exercise at all, I've lost 35# in 8 consecutive weeks of dieting, plus I feel much healthier, more energetic and my facial skin looks a little younger., Specifically, I lost 14# in the first 2 weeks, then 9# more in the next 2 weeks, then 7# more in the next 2 weeks and then 5# more in the past 2 weeks. During those 8 weeks, I over-indulged in unhealthy food and drinks on about 7 different days when attending social events. I've tried all the popular diet plans before with limited results. The Bone Broth Diet is by far the easiest and most effective diet I've ever tried. The key to this diet is the bone broth itself. I'm consuming nothing but 6 cups of beef bone broth on two, non-consecutive mini-fast days per week as the book advises. Tip - I bought my first beef broth from local health store and it was weak, expensive at $2.00 per cup, and not very satisfying. As a result, those mini-fasting days were tough to tolerate. So, I started making my own beef broth in my crock pot for 24 hours with tap water, onions, celery, carrots, pepper, Himalayan salt, garlic, and grass fed beef bones from a local farm - total cost $.50 per cup. It is delicious and very satisfying, so now the mini-fasting days are a breeze. This is such an easy diet that I'm going to continue dieting a few more weeks to see how much more weight I can lose.

This is a clean paleo diet (no dairy, grains, sugar etc) plus two days a week that you fast and only drink bone broth. Bone broth is super good for you.There.I just saved you the money.Edit: it has some decent recipes. Also bone broth *is* really excellent for you.

Public-key cryptography and digital certificates are relative newcomers on the Internet scene, although they have been around for many years in closed commercial and financial networks and military systems. In this book, we concentrate on the aspects of these technologies that target the Internet culture and address the needs of Internet consumers. Internet consumers have already begun to reap the benefits of digital certificates. They can use popular e-mail products to send and receive secure e-mail, connect to secure Web sites to purchase goods or obtain services, and allow downloaded Java applets or ActiveX controls to run on their computers after verifying the origin of the downloaded code. Systems engineers have traditionally faced many challenges when incorporating security technologies into consumer systems. They usually add protection mechanisms late in the design process, and they can never quite get rid of all the outstanding security issues--the maze of twisty paths and interconnections between protector and protectee seem simply endless. The basic trick to managing the unmanageable seems to be to exploit trust. But, to rely upon such a vague concept to solve engineering problems, we also need an infrastructure that addresses assurance, confidence, liability, insurance, agreements, and accreditation. However, do trust and the supporting infrastructure enable individuals and corporations to conduct monetary transactions on the Internet? How can we implement the required notion of trust in this global, open network? In this book, we argue that digital certificates are destined to enable secure electronic commerce on the Internet. The technological liberation introduced by public-key cryptography allows the public component of key pairs to be shared openly, thus creating a basic infrastructure for trust-based security. Packaged in internationally standardized message formats, public keys can be signed and certified to form identity certificates by anyone who wishes to be a certificate-issuing authority. By using the corresponding personal, private component of the key pair, you can establish your identity to Web sites to purchase goods, obtain services, or just say "Hi! It's me!" to the world in a digitally signed e-mail message. The mathematical relationship between the public and private parts of a key pair enables anyone to ascertain your identity by verifying that you are indeed in the possession of your private key, merely by using your public key. Now, if consumers trust popular, branded certificate-issuing authorities to assure the quality of this kind of key certification, we are well on the way to establishing trust and facilitating commerce on the Internet. We have addressed the hard problem of identifying and authenticating arbitrary, willing parties with standards corporations and society required to embrace electronic commerce. We would like to invite you to share our passion and take the plunge into the once-so-secret world of cryptography and keys and help build the Internet public-key infrastructure. We encourage you to begin obtaining or issuing certificates and to use them for experimentation, business, or to reduce the cost of using more expensive trusted networking technologies. By using certificate-based security systems, deploying prototype services, coming to grips with the basic building blocks of certificate-issuing systems, and sharing the learning process with others, we will collectively build another layer of net relationships, this time fashioning the Internet's trust networks. By reinventing a world founded on trust instead of fear of dominance, not only do we all win additional safety and security, but the resulting infrastructure will expand commercial and technological opportunities and horizons. Content of the Book The book is composed of six parts and four appendices. The first three parts cover the fundamentals of security, cryptography, and digital certificates; certificate-based security applications that address threats to Internet consumers; and vendors that supply public-key-based products and services. Part IV presents advanced material aimed at users and operators interested in the world of commercial-grade public key infrastructure. Parts V and VI begin a practical journey to round out the ideas presented in the earlier parts of the book. They provide deployment projects to help a programmer or system administrator obtain hands-on experience with the application of digital certificates to enable Web server and client authentication. These parts also demonstrate how to set up a local certificate-issuing system that outsources key management using VeriSign OnSite, and how to program Microsoft Certificate Server to issue certificates using a variety of languages (Java, Visual Basic, C++) and the open X.509 certificate formats. You can refer to the part descriptions that we have provided for each part of the book to find out more information about the material covered in each part. The four appendices contain material from other sources. Appendix A, from RSA Laboratories, explains the language of certificate notation (ASN.1). Software Used in This Book Change is happening fast in the field of digital certificates, and commercial vendors are rapidly deploying new public-key-based security products in the marketplace. This fast rate of change posed a difficult question for us: How much vendor-specific material should we include to present a technological perspective on mass-market public-key security applications without jeopardizing the useful lifespan of this book? Because this book is about the applied aspects of public-key technology as well as its theory, we decided to provide a rather detailed exposition of some relevant vendor-specific products that were new to the marketplace at the time we were writing this book. However, we limited our coverage of products for which there is already a reasonable amount of documentation. By carefully limiting the number of vendor-specific technologies and providing a considerable amount of essential, basic material, we believe we have written a book that will serve as a fundamental guide to digital certificates. We have used the following vendor-specific technologies in this book. To explain the fundamentals of trust-based software management, we have used Netscape Communicator 4.04 and Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 browsers. To illustrate how to send and receive secure e-mail, we have used Netscape Messenger and Microsoft Outlook Express, which come bundled with the browsers. We have used sample Web pages from the VeriSign public site to illustrate the steps required to obtain certificates and to set up a local certificate-issuing system that outsources key management to VeriSign. This book is a classic example on how not to write a book.First the authors were never clear on the intended audience. Sometimes they seem to be talking a grandmother touching a mouse for the first time, driving you crazy with obvious details. Other times they seem to be chatting to the boys in the backroom at Verisign, way over your head with undefined acronym soup.The book constantly uses terms without defining them. The books explains in great detail how to do unspeakable acts to a certificate server without first explaining WHY you might want to do such things or why you might want your own certificate server in the first place.Sometimes the book reads like a sales promo for Verisign where some of the authors work.The book does not explain how to compute any of the digests or public/private key computations, but it does give a reasonable overview of how they work.For a book on certificates, oddly it shows no examples, or their format.The authors did a reasonable, if somewhat belaboured, job of explaining S/MIME email signing and encryption. I have not encountered one before.

This book is a valuable help for everybody involved in digital certificates based systems design and implementation. It covers both digital certificates technical matter (strating from crypto basics) and the most popular certification based applications of to-day. The book may be regarded as built up with three main sections plus appendixes. In the first section (including three chapters) are introduced, with clearness and property, basic terms and concepts reagarding data security in the Internet context (and beyond). A chapter is for cryptography, discussing for non math professionals, buth in reasonable depth, crypto basics and secret key, public key and message digest algorithms. A third, accurate chapter covers both the format and the functionalities of digital certificate. The consistent second section (chapters 3 to 15) covers the most popular digital certificate based applications, taking into account both technical and functional aspects: code authentication, secure e-mail, secure Web-site, Certification Authority services and so on. Some popular certification management platforms and engines are covered in detail. The third section (chapters 16 to 20) is the most system oriented part of the book, and may be see as a working companion for the system developer. It covers in depth, additionally supported by the included CD-ROM content, the usage of Microsoft Certificate Server to develop a complete C.A. Appendix contains Microsoft Certification Server related additional material and a short description of ASN.1, a popular abstract syntax notation language used to describe security mechanisms. The CD-ROM completes with a ful PKCS standard set. Plenty of useful security standard references, pertinent and well organised bibliography, intriguing Web site documentation sources are additional pay-off when buying this professional and highly commendable book.

I really got a lot out of this book. While I was not thrilled with the Microsoft-centricity of the book, I don't feel it detracted from the purpose of the book. They go at a reasonable pace, and do an excellent job at explaining complex subjects.I do disagree with some of the other reviewers about it being a good book for learning about digital and/or network security. Digital certificates are a small albeit important component of computer security.

This is surely a book I would recommend for those who are interested in learning about digital security without having to delve into complex algorithms and technicalities. The language is simple and objective, and the content provides a comprehensive overview, without being vague. There are a lot of clear examples and cases. A great work indeed !

This is a great book for those that know enough about the internet to know how dangerous it can be and what things are available to help increase your security and peace of mind.I think it will appeal to a lot of people that are computer literate yet not as internet savvy as they would like to be. There are source code examples in the book, but don't let that scare you as programming skills are not a prerequisite of reading this book. (I just skipped over those parts!)The authors really take their time and give you definitions as well as case study examples.Well written and organized.

A Good book for someone wanting an overall picture about Internet Security. Excellent coverage on the concept of Digital Certificates, SSL and encryption. Examples depend heavily on Microsoft products but get the message accross.

This is not the definitive book about digital signatures and internet security, but one of the few of them available today, wrote by 3 experts. Interesting for programmers using Microsoft Platform.

My sister loves this book. More than just pot holders n scarves! Plenty of great ideas and informative too.

I am a new weaver in the past six months. While I like and use online sources to learn new techniques, there is nothing like a book for continuous reference. The writing is clear and detailed. The pictures show exactly what you need to see clearly. The conversion charts for those of us who started out as knitters are extremely helpful. I expect this to be a "go to" book for learning and inspiration for future projects. If you want clear direction direction on how to warp, common weaving problems, explanation of terms, how to calculate what you will need for a project and how to make your weaving look professional and interesting this is a great place to start.

Concise, cohesive, and packed full of knowledge, this book will get you to not only find your rigid heddle loom but also to explore and use it to its fullest. There is a comparison of all looms currently available with pros and cons of each listed. That is just the start. I was blown away to see a chapter on tapestry -let alone all the laces and how to adapt four shaft draw downs. This book will not disappoint you. Just get it and start exploring!

I've just started learning to weave, and I refer to this book frequently. It's inspiring, easy to understand, and very helpful. I have the Kindle edition, and it is very satisfactory on a tablet--you can move around easily in the book, enlarge the many photographs to see detail, and the fonts are very readable. I am usually reluctant to buy these sorts of references on the Kindle, so it's worth noting.

This book has newer ideas of inventive weaving I never seen in any other books on Ridged Heddle Weaving. They also show you how to calculate how much yarn you're going to need for a large project like a blanket. I'm pleased with this book. Plus it has photographs of different looms including ones I own.

It’s been less than 24 hours since I recieved this book, bought at the reccomendation of the weaving expert at Webs (America’s largest yarn store which I am so lucky to live less than an hour from). I was initiallly overwhelmed by receiving a loom for Xmas, as a avid knitter, this is a fiber art I didn’t know I wanted to try. I am on page 77 and have learned so much and am so excited to get warping! I’m trying to be careful and learn in advance of my first try so I don’t get frustrated by messing up right away. The book has clear explanations and photos, addresses the right way and wrong way to do things while still taking into account that some weavers may want to just jump right in and learn on the fly... there are trouble shooting sections for those weavers. The book addresses color theory in chapter 4 which is a nice addition as so much of weaving is about color combination. I think this book appears to be the perfect first weaving book for anyone with a rigid heddle loom. It boils everything down so you aren’t overwhelmed, it has a light touch teaching style but is rich in content. I think it should accompany any gift of a loom actually - help a New weaver get off on the right foot.

Sure wish I had this book back when I started RH weaving, but I want to emphasize that this is not just a book for beginners by any means. It goes into so many things including supplemental inlay, the Theo Moorman technique, leno lace, tartan, woven shibori, using two and even three heddles, shadow weave and all kinds of things I’ve never taken time to explore.She includes great instructions, phenomenal and easy to see photos and projects that I’d actually want to make. She has chapters on troubleshooting problems and illustrates specifically how to fix things like selvedge problems, frowning or smiling selvedges, replacing broken warp threads as well as an in-depth chapter on finishing.The subtitle of this book says “Discover the Full Potential of the Rigid Heddle Loom For Beginners and Beyond. The “and beyond” part is definitely true. This book is worth every penny and even has some applications that I think beginning floor loom weavers would find helpful too.

This book is an interesting mix of beginners tips (with a section called “tech support”) and seemingly complicated solutions. Or maybe it just seems that way to me since I’m new to it! I do like the photos of each way you could be messing up your project. Either way, I feel confident in using this as a first timer’s reference book. I also enjoyed the bright colors used- sometimes when it’s all pastel you have to wonder if the author assumes we all live in Florida… Anyway, there are several projects to weave (pillow covers and kitchen towels in addition to traditional scarves) and advice on choosing yarn and equipment, and suggestions for weaving techniques. Overall I’d say the projects were the best part of it, because normally what I see are things I’m not interested in making, but these photos were pretty inspiring.

I've read "hands on heddle weaving" and snatches of other rigid heddle books, but this one is by far my favorite. For one thing, it's not dry as dirt. For another, it has the most varied projects, including weaving efabric and wire-weaving. All of the projects looked attractive and interesting, with bright, vibrant, MODERN colors.The kindle edition has some obnoxious formatting flaws. The captions don't always seem linked to the picture. Also, the letters "st" are linked together. It bugged me every time I saw it, which was often, since you get sentences like: "HiSTorically, moST weavers twiST STarting at the left". It can be painful to read. If that kind of thing bugs you, I'd get the print version.The hyperlinks and reduced price make up for the deficits, in my eyes, but I hope they fix the eBook issues someday.

This book looked perfect for our week-long trip to Park City this summer, but I ended up finding much more relevant information on the internet and through visitor centers. Not one travel decision we made during the entire week was influenced by this book--and I read it cover to cover. It summarizes a lot of available things to do, but it doesn't rate things to give you an idea of what would be worthwhile to do. We didn't use any of the outdoors stuff since we went during the summer and the summer activities were too old for our 2-year old and 4-year old. The introductions to each section were interesting, but fairly Morman-biased (expected, I guess). Anyway, I had modest hopes for this book, but they were not fulfilled. It was a waste of money for me.
