This is essentially a photo album on metropolitan buildings during their construction period. It is a large format book which is beautifully printed on acid free paper and bound nicely. All the photos are in black and white. Each page holds a single photo (with perhaps a single exception at the beginning). A quite informative foreword (by Joseph Rosa) accompanies the photos. The compositions range from almost purely abstracts (p17) to essentially documentary ones (?p67) although I dare say most can be read as abstractions of a varying degree. The afterword by the author, describing the shooting conditions, is a pleasure to read!"Abstract monochromes of naked or partly covered constructions" may not sound particularly inviting for many potential readers, I guess. Still, I have found most of the images produced using a large format film camera to be really beautiful; in composition, framing and tonality. If you wonder how a study of verticals, horizontals and diagonals can be this satisfying and even intriguing, just turn a few pages.

A great book on the evolution to today's modern physics starting from the laws of Newton to Maxwell's unification of electricity and magnetism to quantum physics to today's unified theory of string theory. This book has basically the same material and themes as Michio's other book Hyperspace. So if you have already read that book, I wouldn't suggest buying and reading this book as it only has a little more detail than Hyperspace. I would have to say both books are pretty much the same in scope and material so you wouldn't learn anything new. Also, because both books were published around the mid nineties there wouldn't be any new updated information on the material. I like reading Michio's books as I am a lover of physics and science in general so I wasn't peeved that this book was pretty much the same as Hyperspace. It had been a while since I read Hyperspace, so I liked refreshing my mind on these theoretical physics concepts.

I bought M. Kaku's more recent book, "Parallel Worlds", but at the last minute decided to first read this book that was already on my bookshelf (alog with "Hyperspace", another one by Kaku). I'm about halfway through and glad that I switched since this one starts from scratch (e.g. Newton) and ramps up over the first couple of chapters to the more current work being done. It's a nice way to put the newer work in context, as well as helping to provide a basis for the later reading. Not saying it's required -- my guess is that any book by M. Kaku would be an interesting "stand alone" read -- but I can say that this book is really enjoyable.

Popularizer of science Michio Kaku has made an attempt to explain the current view of sub-atomic particle physics to the science-interested layman in the book "Beyond Einstein," and I think he succeeds for the most part. There are a few failed attempts at explaining crucial concepts, but overall the book is lucid and logically structured. Theoretical physicists have been chasing down the "theory of everything" - one equation from which all other laws and principles of physics can be derived - since Einstein first tried to unite gravity and electromagnetism. Kaku presents the history of this field, beginning with Newton and hitting the high points along to way- Maxwell, Einstein, Kaluza, Feynman, Gell-Mann, Schwarz, Glashow, Nambu, etc. The emphasis is on the physicists and their contributions to the field, as opposed to Euclid's Window, which traces the mathematicians behind the tools used in the theory of everything. I haven't yet read too many other books on the theory of everything, but Kaku's volume strikes me as impressive nonetheless. I think some pictures of the Lie groups would have helped the discussion of supersymmetry (and provide some gee-whiz effect as well, since they are indeed very beautiful). The authors' excitement and hope for the future of science literally jumps out of every page, which makes for an engaging read. This book is definitely worth your time. As a side note, I imagine this might make a great gift for someone taking physics in high school.

While I take a profound, almost religious, satisfaction in physics, especially the more exotic concepts of relativity and quantum theory, I have not the math-physics type of mind that my friend Steve Smith has--lucky fellow. I found this book readable enough, though, because it doesn't belabor the math side of physics, nor is it one long list of arcane physics formulae. It is still a little more advanced in places than I was fully able to appreciate, but I do enjoy the mental exercise that this kind of a challenge provides. I had heard of the Superstring theory when it first arose, but I did not take the time then to find out much about it. It took Steve's intervention to bring it again to my attention, and this book seemed a good place to start. As a person with an interest in history, especially the history of science, I found the background data on the individual physicists responsible for the various components of the Big Bang Theory and of the Superstring theory of especial interest. It certainly made the acheivements of these people more human to me and therefore more wonderful. It also helped me put together, at least at my rudimentary level of understanding, the thought processes that went into making each advance, much as the works of Australian physicist Paul Davis' books do. Both have a facility for taking the average person through the processes in constructing and testing a theory of the universe. With each step forward presented by the author, the theory made a little more sense. I thoroughly enjoyed the learning expereince and plan on reading some of the other books by the same author.

This volume takes you through Kaluza-Klein formalism and there is some math that must be understood for an insightful experience. Some of the material is dated, and Dr. Kaku's string theory has taken a beating in the scientific community of late.However, this book is still one of the best introductions to the fifth dimension and the integration of time, electromagnetism, and gravitation.There are books that are best described as mind candy; Dr. Kaku's works are a brain feast that will nourish your intellect and imagination for as long as your remain lucid.

Can't go wrong, good quality and it's a good read.

As usual, Mr. Kaku's writing is able to condense phenomenally interesting, and complicated, concepts into very readable material. The book also does not assume that the reader possesses any high level mathematical skill/knowledge. Excellent read.

Machio Kaku's shows on the science channel are must see for anyone interested in our universe. 'Beyond Einstein' continues his (pretty) easy to understand presentation of superstring theory, and related topics. It takes a while to read the couple hundred pages, but the book is one you read two or three times to get the most out of it. Some simple explanations, such as why nights are dark, add to the layman's knowledge of 'ordinary' events. A great book.

I ordered this Compendium at the request of my husband, who is always searching for the perfect pizza crust. He's on the verge of buying a new smoker/grill and is researching new pizza crusts that can go on the grill. While I leave the pizza-making expertise to him, I did scan through the pages and found that quite a few of the flatbread recipes sound absolutely delicious. The instructions are very thorough and easy to understand, and I especially liked that variations to the traditional recipes were also offered if you want to "change things up." While not a standard book size, I don't anticipate that will be a problem for me, since the pages do open up fully and will stay on the right page for easy review while preparing the recipe.

Awesome, well written, extremely educational book. Beautiful photos. Great, countless recipes. Beat my expectations.Canola Oil or Grape Seed Oil have much higher smoke points than olive oil, which burns quickly at high heat and has a very strong, overpowering flavor. Don't be stingy on the neutral flavored oil you put into pizza. Fat is flavor. Pizzas and breads are tasteless without oil, salt, and sugar. Honey can also be awesome, depending on the situation.

I loved this book when I first perused it at my friend's house and so I bought one for myself. For Christmas I gave my 3 20's sons the books along with a pizza peels and baking stones. By mistake I didn’t order enough to go around and so I gave mine to one son and I am going to reorder for myself.What I really like about 500 Pizzas is that a beginner can pick up the book and have success baking a really good pizza right off the bat and then grow skills with other recipes in the book.

While I believe the number of "raw" recipes is far less than 500 (maybe I'm wrong), after each section they offer 4-6 "variations" on each of the recipes previously given. Between all the variations on the primary recipes, there's probably about the 500 number.For anyone expecting a large book, well, large it's not. It's probably about 6" square but a tiny bit over an inch thick. For being so small, it packs a lot of recipes and a fair amount of other info into its tiny shelf footprint.I think it's a very worthy supplement to Flatbreads & Flavors (a good survey of flatbread culture the world over) and Vegetarian Pizza Cookbook (I mention it mainly for its good variety of crusts and a few nifty dessert pizza recipes).This seems like a pretty decent little compendium and certainly could be used to spur some creative pizza & flatbread dishes... Though, I might have liked to see a wider variety of crusts & sauces introduced. Or, as with Flatbreads & Flavors, some other recipes thaVegetarian Pizzat would act as accompaniments to the pizzas & flatbreads listed. Such as some curries or other things that typically go with the mentioned breads. But, I guess that's why I think this book and Flatbreads and Flavors complement one another relatively well.

Great for stocking stuffer. Cool ideas in just a little package.

Nice little book, would be a good stocking stuffer for newbies. I will use for some of the flatbreads, they seam very simple.

The book is so helpful. I the pizza dough from the book and it was so easy to make and to form thr pizza. I tried a few of the pizza recipes and they were delicious and well received my company.

One of the best pizza books I have bought. Lots of useful recipes for families with kids who like "regular" stuff on their pizzas! I have a number of more "trendy" pizza cookbooks, but though they're nice to look through, I wouldn't make most of the suggested pizzas and if I did, my husband and children probably wouldn't eat them :)Follow up: I wanted to comment on the fact that some other reviewers experienced trouble with some of the doughs in the book. I wanted to say that I have only used the pizza recipes in the book and the dough is fine for all of the pizzas. I can't speak to the success anyone might have with the naan and similar, but the pizza doughs are pretty standard and work fine. :)

Alas, this book was shipped before the editor finished their job. There are some good points as the author covers some important features of Cinema 4D, but the editing is sloppy, the screen shots too small to read and the examples very often are missing a critical step or two.There is a crying need for good Cinema 4D training materials but sadly this one doesn't step up to the plate.Solution?1. Proof read the material before printing2. User testing to make sure the examples work3. Bigger screen shots that are readable4. Don't assume that the reader knows where to find things5. Don't be in a hurry

This is probably the harshest review I've ever left, which is a shame. I've just bumped into the world of C4d, and for me these traditional print books that start you at square one and work you through the basic tools and exercises to get familiar with the interface and workflow have always been great. I of course hop around on tutorials online for various things, but the hard reality for me and probably many others is that a program this complex really takes walking through the basic building blocks of the software. I've had great success using this type of literature for most adobe software. This is my first foray into a 3d program, so this seemed like a logical first step.Now, I'm a graphic designer, so some of the comments here might seem extreme to you but I can assure you they aren't. The number one reason a book like this exists is to provide us with clear, concise, well documented and clearly presented information that lets us comfortably follow through tutorials that while difficult have been expertly prepared for us. That is why I paid over $50 for this book.First impression, the book is larger than most I've seen of this type and the pages are filled with dense text as opposed to visual examples. Bottom line, the author's writing style is verbose and sort of like telling you a story. While this could be nice in some settings, it's terrible here. The pre-roll section of the book is rushed in terms of helpful explanation, and could have spared us pages of content through intelligent layout choices. Rather than giving us a story like explanation of tools, bouncing from one tool to the next within the same paragraph, bullet points with image illustrations in a strictly followed regiment of tool-by-tool information would be greatly beneficial and preferable. This kind of book doesn't need to read like a technical manual dry from top to bottom, I like a nice instructor voicing, but we lost our way on this one.Also, one the online companion site, the entire preroll section is missing as a folder. Basically, if you were interested in following the example as stated on the last line of page 21, "Check out this sign in the Pre-Roll assets folder. It is named align_to_spline.c4d" you're out of luck, because they don't seem to exist. Also, generally speaking, video companions to books would be much more accurate and useful if they presented you with either the same materials you are working on at that time in the book, or something very similar requiring a subtle but user-initiated leap towards applying the learned principles in a slightly new fashion from what they are learning in the book. Still, we really just want to follow the example we are reading to get a better grasp for how these things should be looking, working, etc.The images are atrociously small. Whoever laid out this book is a maniac. I'm not pushing 90 with bifocals here, either. This type of resource needs large images with intelligent use of focus to let users known exactly where we should be looking on the interface you have screenshot for us. Rather than hoping we will find the right place in your tiny, 2 inch image covered in cm sized selection boxes, perhaps give us a hint? Use shadowing, or colored selections. Really just terrible here.The first project chapter starts to at least warm us with better guidance, but I ran into the same sloppy writing and poor direction (the sole reason for this book to exist is for exceptional direction.) in the first examples. The author expects us to be able to follow along with him as if we were watching his overhead projector move the mouse for us, and we would do the same alongside him. This is simply not the case, and there needs to really be an exacting didactic accounting of where we are going, what clicks it takes to get there, all the basics of a good written/visual instructional dialog. For instance, the first assignment is a teacup project. Early on, I ran across this gem."to see how this shape is going to progress, switch to Model mode and with the cube selected (wait... what is Model mode with a capital M again? where should I be clicking? We are novices.) add a subdivision surface to the scene."No example of where these tools are, just the expectation that the user now intimately knows the interface and recalls where a subdivision surface lives in the UI. Now, I like having to learn it a bit and thus know it better by having found it myself, but this is a pretty poor approach to writing a tutorial. The next stage of this tutorial has use scaling down a piece of a shape that has been inner-extruded to change the shape of a cube into a tapered cup shape, big at the top, small at the bottom. In the images accompanying the book, the rounded cup shape magically becomes a beautiful taper at the bottom. However, it was only by inspecting his images closely and googling did I realize that he had in fact switched tools to select only the points, not the planes of the shape. Also, he had used what appears to be another tool entirely ,and never before mentioned, the lathe tool, to add a cut shearing clear through the bottom of the cup in order to accomplish a squared bottom as opposed to a rounded one similar to a hanging water balloon. How on earth could this kind of thing be acceptable in a tutorial book?Does anyone even really care if we are learning the basics or did the publishers and author pretty much throw up their hands and say "ah, well there's not much money left in these these days anyway, everybody just uses free online tutorials."Yeah, no kidding! At least we can follow along!Before we really have any idea what we are doing or what this means, he throws in, "In our case, we want a cup that is more squared or we would just build this using a spline and lathe NURBS combination." Wait... so there was a lathe in here? Is that what you screenshot for us on this tea cup taper? Where am I? Where's the light switch? I don't know my name.It's great to throw in that comment so people who know what they are doing can nod and go, "Oh yeah of course we would do that and use the spline and lathe NURBS, but this is for a tutorial for people who don't know anything." But THOSE PEOPLE DON'T NEED YOUR BOOK so why am I reading it on the 4th page of the first tutorial I've ever seen from you?All in all, just really poorly planned and poorly executed. Seems as though it was culled from class notes and presentations and while it's nice to have a book like this for this software, frankly paying somewhere else to learn this stuff, maybe GreyScaleGorilla or something, would probably be much more efficient.I may update this review once I get through the entire book. I'm sure that comment could cause so tsk tsk, but I've done plenty of these types of books and ouch... this one is a doozy. I can get through it, but it could do with some intelligent design, editing, and layout choices. Also, the entire ethos behind putting a book like this out could use some polish. If you're going to put it out, put it out right.

Required textbook, I think its been an excellent aid

I was sorely disappointed by this Focal book. The index was anemic, there were grammatical and typographical errors. The parts of the book I read were helpful.

Really helpful for begginers. The book includes all you need to know to get started with CG and C4D and gives clear examples and guidelines to make it easier to understand. It has well-written instructions that are clear and that teach you the theory and technique instead of teaching just how to do some specific things.It is a great resource for begginers like me. I trully recommend it.

If you purchased volume one of these Murry/Fallberg tales and plan on buying volume two I've got great news for you: the stories here are even more exciting than those in volume one (#3 in the Disney Masters series)! The quality of the reproductions is just as perfect but Fallberg greatly improved the quality of his writing (Murry's artwork remains top-notch but I feel that he too was beginning to enjoy the stories more and was devoting more time and effort to creating background detail and atmosphere). “The Lost City”, “The Marvelous Magnet”, “The Vanishing Railroad” and “Yesterday Ranch” are fun, exciting stories. Some may not know that while these serials were appearing in WDC&S Fallberg and Murry would occasionally create new, long stories to be featured in Mickey Mouse magazine. These stories are every bit as exciting as the serials that are being printed here. Will Fantagraphics ever get around to printing them? I don't know, but I certainly hope so. Meanwhile, enjoy this highly recommended collection!

As a Baguette (the bag) lover I had high hopes for this book. Unfortunately I'm quite disappointed. The essays are short & sweet, informative, and entertaining. The pictures are large and clear, and they did not skimp on the number of photographed bags. I did not care much about the section on artist's interpretations of the Fendi Baguette as this is not what the Baguettes are all about for me. What I was REALLY disappointed by was that there are no references as to what year/season the bags are from, its just page after page of bags. I want to know what year a specific bag is from so that I have some context as to what was going on in fashion or in the world for that matter. I bet there are some stories about whatever was going on inspired a particular design -- or vice versa -- and the fact that this information is lacking sadly takes the enjoyment factor of the book down a few notches.

Gorgeous book, bought as a present for the wife. Nice coffee table piece, and very well presented. Pricey, but what isn't with the Fendi name on it?

One of the first books I ever bought to learn spanish. This book was originally written in 1955 but has been updated, revised and expanded. It really does make spanish easy to learn but you must take the time to study the book at least an hour per day. The author`s method for teaching you Spanish is very effective and impressive even by today`s standards even though it was written in the 50s. If something is good, it`s good no matter when it was made. I have read and studied many, many spanish books in my quest to become fluent and this book is the first book I would recommend to any beginner or intermediate learner and even advanced spanish students will learn plenty of spanish grammer and vocabulary here. In fact, I recently bought myself a new copy and started studying it again. I wanted to refresh myself on the lessons contained herein and I find that I am being reminded of many words and expressions that I forgot about and I am learning lots of new spanish. That`s what inspired me to write a review and tell people about this most excellent book for starting your spanish education and working your way up to fluency.

Text seems well planned (haven't gotten too far along yet!). I bought this for the kindle, so my review is on the electronic version of the book. The option to change font size does NOT work properly and if you make the font larger the display just runs out of sight. Changing the kindle to landscape helps a bit to get a larger view without each sentence running out of sight, but there are still limits to how big you can make the text. (Making the text larger is one of the best things about electronic formats - if your eyes are tired you can still read!) I was a bit disappointed in this, there does not seem to be any way to scroll over and see the rest of the text if you have enlarged the font (using kindle voyage). I have tried playing with options for margins and line spacing but nothing I have done allows the font to go beyond a certain size before it just cuts off the end of all the sentences of the page (instead of moving them down so you can continue reading).

I'm a casual user of Spanish. I've used, off and on, the original paperback version of this book for over 20 years. I vacation often in Mexico and have recently been to Spain. I'm comfortable with its "dialogue" format. I feel that I'm learning the language - not just picking up phrases to use in certain situations. I've tried Rosetta Stone and prefer this to merely parroting sounds. It's mix of dialogue, vocabulary, grammar and syntax has built, I feel, insight into the workings of the language which has generalized to a comprehension and familiarity beyond the book's lesson plans. I've received compliments from native Spanish speakers on my comprehension, pronunciation and skill regarding verb tenses.

This item was used - I knew that - but it was said to be "used-very good". I would disagree with the assessment because the spine is heavily worn, the cover is heavily worn and there are markings in red pencil and regular pencil throughout the book. In addition, there were quite a few scraps of paper in the book and an automobile decal as if the book had never even been looked at for evaluation. I had used the "Italian Made Simple" book years earlier, and this is why I wanted the "Spanish Made Simple" book of the series. It is a good language book, but it was more like "used-acceptable".

This is a good text for learning Spanish rapidly. The lessons are clear and well-organized. So far (I am on lesson 28 of 49), I find that each lesson takes from an hour and a half to two hours to go through, writing out all the exercises and practicing the dialogue out loud as directed. I am brushing up long-forgotten Spanish, and I also have a background in French, so it may take a brand new learner a bit longer to complete each lesson. I recommend spending a few days reviewing the material and practicing the vocabulary before proceeding to the next lesson.I have found, however, that there are several errors in the answer section...which is rather disconcerting when you are trying to learn something new. This text has been revised, and some of the answers may have been based on questions in an earlier edition, but they certainly should have been revised along with the text. Most of the errors are obvious and do not have to do with vocabulary or grammar...just with the content of the dialogue...a picture is now hanging over a bookcase, not the piano...that sort of thing. It's a bit annoying when your correct answer does not agree with the book. That's just sloppy on the editor's part.

I took Spanish lessons last year, and the instructor recommended this book. I thought it was a kind of workbook, with exercises I could do to help me remember.Turns out most of the lessons say memorize these words.That’s not what I need! I need more of a Duolingo kind of practice. Sitting around trying to memorize is not the best way to learn a new language.Waste f time and money.

I'm using this book in conjunction with the Pimslur Spanish 3 CDs, and am finally making progress in my quest to learn this beautiful language. This book presents interesting dialogues followed by progressive grammar lessons and exercises. I'm using this book in a class which provides the invaluable added experience of forcing you to use what you are learning thru speaking to others, so I highly recommend taking a class if at all possible. I would love to be able to just listen to tapes and absorb it all, but in my experience, you have to go thru the tedium of learning tenses and this book has helped make the process less tedious... Even enjoyable!

I purchased this book because it was recommended by my instructor. It is helpful and I like the exercises in it. I am not a beginner and have skipped over some parts, but, I have learned some from this book.
