Clapton: The Autobiography, by Eric Clapton

From Publishers Weekly

Readers hoping for sex and drugs and rock 'n' roll won't be disappointed by the legendary guitarist's autobiography. As he retraces every step of his career, from the early stints with the Yardbirds and Cream to his solo successes, Clapton also devotes copious detail to his drug and alcohol addictions, particularly how they intersected with his romantic obsession with Pattie Boyd. His relationship with the woman for whom he wrote Layla culminated in a turbulent marriage he describes as drunken forays into the unknown. But he genuinely warms to the subject of his recovery, stressing its spiritual elements and eagerly discussing the fund-raising efforts for his Crossroads clinic in Antigua. His self-reckoning is filled with modesty, especially in the form of dissatisfaction with his early successes. He professes ambivalence about the famous Clapton is God graffiti, although he admits he was grateful for the recognition from fans. At times, he sounds more like landed gentry than a rock star: bragging about his collection of contemporary art, vigorously defending his hunting and fishing as leisure activities, and extolling the virtues of his quiet country living. But both the youthful excesses and the current calm state are narrated with an engaging tone that nudges Clapton's story ahead of other rock 'n' roll memoirs. I’m a lifelong Eric Clapton fan, though I can’t say I like everything he puts out. I am familiar with all stages of his musical career, but prior to reading his 2007 autobiography entitled Clapton I knew very little about his personal life other than disjointed anecdotes here and there. In this book, the guitarist extraordinaire offers a candid look back at his roller coaster life. Overall, it’s a pretty satisfying tour through about a half century of rock and roll history. I may not always have enjoyed the ride that Clapton took me on, but I was always thoroughly engaged by it.Perhaps the defining moment in Clapton’s life is his much-discussed romance with George Harrison’s wife Patti Boyd, the inspiration for the Layla album and other songs in Clapton’s body of work. That particular episode proves not to be quite as romantic as the music that was composed around it. Here Clapton admits that as soon as he won Boyd’s love he began cheating on her. In fact, Clapton treats a lot of women like dirt in this book, and delves pretty deeply into the psychological hows and whys of it all. To his credit, however, unlike Pete Townshend in his autobiography Who I Am, Clapton doesn’t ask you to forgive him, beg you to like him, or expect you to admire his exploits. He simply relates everything in a matter-of-fact way, as if to say these are some bad things I’ve done, and there’s nothing I can do about them now.Clapton is equally candid about his substance abuse, and his story of recovery is inspiring. One can’t help but admire the way he eventually turned his life around. Yet the book is frustrating because for most of its length he is still very much an emotional child. He doesn’t really get his act together until his mid-50s, when he marries a woman 30 years his junior. At that point you’re happy for him, but the book also starts to get boring as Clapton becomes your grandpa, talking about “computer culture” (owning a laptop), shopping for shoes in Japan, and the necessity of taking a nap every afternoon. As revealing and cathartic as all the talk about his drug use and alcoholism may be, the reader is left wishing Clapton had devoted more ink to his music. He covers Blind Faith, Cream, and Derek and the Dominos pretty well, but glosses over much of his solo career. He left the Yardbirds because their music was too poppy and not true to the blues, but he doesn’t feel the need to justify his later forays into easy listening, smooth jazz, and Luther Vandross-style R&B. Some of his greatest albums, like Slowhand, he dismisses as sloppy, drunken playing. His own personal favorite is Pilgrim, an album which critics frequently cite as one of his all-time worst.A really good rock and roll biography will make me want to go back and dig out that artist’s old albums, thereby reliving some of his or her glory days. This book didn’t do that for me. As much as I love his guitar playing, I’d have to say my respect for the man diminished a bit after reading his life story. Not only were some of his moral choices off-putting, but he just doesn’t come across as intelligent as you might expect a virtuoso musician to be. I’m not here to criticize Clapton’s life, however, but rather to review his book. There’s no denying that Clapton the book is well written and covers a lot of what you’d want to know about the man. It isn’t always fun or exciting, but it’s consistently informative, surprisingly candid, and provides a great deal of insight into the man behind the music.

Eric does a great job of recalling every major phase of his life, even the 'lost years' of near obligatory heroin addiction. The work is almost inspirational, as Clapton exudes positive vibes towards the full range of rock legends and near legends. The blues take center stage and Clapton cites nearly every major bluesman as an influence. Although Clapton references his god-like stature among guitar leads, one never gets the sense of a swollen ego. If anything, he seems to downplay his virtuoso status. Unlike Richards in 'Life', Clapton does not spend much time on the technical aspects of playing or on musical innovations he pioneered. My favorite song, Badge, barely gets a mention, and even Sunshine of Your Love is a passing paragraph. And don't expect Clapton to dish much dirt; he doesn't have a harsh word to say about anyone, even those he parted with under bitter circumstances. Clapton seems to realize he didn't really grow up until he was in his late 40's, and many women suffered from his self-serving childishness. I found the constant positivity to be a bit forced, likely the result of 20 years as a successfully recovering addict. I feel I know Clapton better, but there is a certain lack of dimension to this self portrait.

I had seen Clapton while he was out of his skull on heroin, downward, and booze. I hated that he ruined the music, because of his self-indulgence. Even then, I knew Clapton was out of control and robbed the blues in exchange for instant gratification. He was suicidal, in my opinion. I couldn't understand then dependency and enabling behaviors. Years later and after having an understanding of mental health issues stemming from childhood, I understood how loved ones get caught up in the user's tsunamis. I saw Clapton a few years after Conor's fall and believed that he was either going to chose to live or die. This book should be on a list for anyone who faces addiction or dependency. The people who love the user give up living for themselves and become the caregivers. Clapton was as honest as he could be about his emotional pain and downward spiral, giving others a path to sobriety.Getting clean is easy but staying sober is a lifelong commitment and requires work.Thank you Eric for keeping a journal and telling a story that is filled with the music of life. You are correct when you say spiritual belief and music will always be heard.

This book is a gift to music history in telling an honest story of life lived in absurdity. Words rang true for me. To prefer to be in the shadows and yet able to practice the enumerable hours for proficiency through all the hailstorms of drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, cynical joking, dangerous chance taking, sex and unrelenting touring and recording schedules.......... This makes sense to me. Sat on 3 rd row of Factory in Phila. In 1968 and he would face away from audience and sometimes connect in a nod to Jack or Ginger. Thank you for sharing your gift even when it hurt you to do so. Sorry it hurt so much and thank God you are living life now.

In the spirit of full disclosure, the author is a dear friend of mine. Dave has been wanting to sail around the world for as long as I have known him. I have been waiting impatiently to read this book ever since he mentioned he might write it. So, when I got “Spirit of a Dream” in the mail yesterday, I just meant to take a peek at it before I went to bed. I read a couple of chapters and then foolishly tried to go to sleep. Even knowing that Dave got home safe, I couldn’t rest without reading until the very end. I also grew up near living near Lake Michigan. The sound of the waves calms me and centers me. I sailed a bit when I was a kid, but I never wanted to get so far out in the water that I couldn’t see land. And yet, I loved this vicarious trip around the world. I am envious of Dave’s encounters with dolphins and whales and the mysterious glowing orbs. I want to go to New Zealand, now, more than ever. Sometimes I am anxious reading a fictional book when the main character that I care about is in danger. In this case the adventures are real. Fortunately, I know that Dave and Bodacious Dream made it home, so I got through the scary bits. You don’t have to be a sailor to appreciate this book. ”Spirit of a Dream" is more than one man's adventure, it is a challenge to follow our own dreams.

Spirit of a Dream transports you on a solo circumnavigation in a 40-foot dream machine aptly named Bodacious Dream along with Otto and Franklin. I loved the book and made myself slow down so I didn’t read it all at once and plan to read it again to my grandkids. Skipper, Dave Rearick takes you on an exciting once in a lifetime adventure and you will not be disappointed! Dave’s story is raw, engaging and heart pounding at times as his prose comes alive on the pages with detailed insight into what it’s really like to sail alone on a 256-day odyssey. You will feel like I did, that you are right there on the deck of Bo with the wind blowing 40 knots and your hand on the tiller. Celebrate what’s for dinner, honor Neptune as you cross the equator, calculate out the distance, wind speed and when that next storm is going to hit and troubleshoot all the unknowns of sailing solo in the vast sea. Be prepared for the unexpected!Dave is a gifted writer who not only describes his many experiences, thoughts and feelings while sailing Bo but shares the grandeur, wonder and history of touring Cape Town the week after Mandela died, hiking the dwindling glacier in New Zealand, snorkeling in the Galapagos Islands and finally navigating through the Panama Canal. Grab some dark chocolate Hersey’s Kisses and take the time to read Spirit of a Dream. You are in for a rare treat sailing with Dave and experiencing his soul’s journey to fulfill his childhood dream. While Spirit is a testament to Dave’s avid passion for sailing, it is clear he is also a passionate advocate and steward of the sea and this beautiful planet Earth. Highly recommend!

In his book "Spirit of a Dream", author Dave Rearick, allowed me to partake in a remarkable true-life personal journey and adventure that most people would never imagine attempting, let alone actually completing.“Spirit of a Dream” is much more than just a simple story about someone sailing around the world solo. It provides the reader with insight into Dave’s mind of why accomplishing his dream was so important to him. Reading this incredible story puts you right there with Dave as he sails the world’s immense oceans alone for over nine months. “Spirit of a Dream” manages to get your heart racing when the unexpected goes wrong, and life or death decisions become his immediate reality. Dave’s respect for the oceans and the world’s environment shows throughout this book and greatly reinforced my respect for such a dedicated, caring and resourceful person.I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys escaping into an incredible true-life story that will whisk you away on an adventure that will spark your interest. Dave Rearick reveals himself to be an amazing writer, and his perspective on life and our fragile world provides us all with something important to think about. Dave also manages to raise our consciousness about what our world and the oceans need from all of us.Thank you, Dave, for sharing your journey, the challenges it brought, and your personal experiences in making it all happen.

I’ve met Dave and sailed his home waters on southern Lake Michigan for over 25 years, and knew about his dream many years ago. Even before his solo round the world, he was an accomplished sailor. I’d also read several sailing articles he’d written over the years before Bo - his writing is thoughtful, humorous and engaging. So I was delighted to follow his solo around the world with Bo, Otto & Franklin in real time. And even more anxious to read the book! It’s the story of one mans ultimate sailing adventure. If you’re a sailor, especially with any experience long distance sailing, you won’t be able to put the book down. You will feel like you’re sailing around the world, bored and exhilarated, exhausted and energized, with lower lows and higher highs than most of us ever face. But the way Dave weaves in his observations on living a well examined life make the journey and this book far more meaningful. I read 174 pages in my first sitting. The book reawakened some deeper thoughts in me, for that I am grateful. Dave has led a fuller, more aware life than most people, and that’s evident in this book - nowhere more than in the epilogue, but DON’T skip ahead!A wonderful book, by a remarkable human being. Cheers Dave!

Rearick's book, "Spirit of a Dream" is well written and a compelling read. It is difficult to put down in following him on his search for peace and answers sailing around the world. Not overly technical, this book can appeal to the sailor and land-lubber alike. Thoughtful, revealing, poetic and at time spiritual the reader is given a peek inside the mind of a solo sailor's highs and lows and inevitable connection to his craft, the oceans, and nature as any sailor venturing off-shore finds in sailing long stretches of the world's oceans. Highly recommend this book for anyone curious about sailing and adventure.

With the support of U.S. President Brandon Zimmer, Cal Stokes and a select, international team will head to the Middle East to take the fight to ISIS... "This is about what's right, not what's popular, a moral imperative" ...Cal, Daniel, Trent and Gaucho (from The Jefferson Group) team up with three-man international teams and train together to take on ISIS... A member of the team from Bulgaria hides an explosive secret... The nineteen man team lands in the Middle East ready to fight to the death...The seventh Corp Justice book, like the ones before it, brings the reader into the story to get an up-close view of the training these men endure and the battles where they are victorious in defending America and her people. You feel like you are a part of the action, even if you are viewing it from a safe distance. This series is about honor and the men that fight for it.

Another great read by Cooper. This one starts with Christians being butchered by ISIS in Iraq.ISIS has killed thousands and plan to kill many more. They are recruiting for fighters all over the world and its beginning to look as though nothing will stop them from taking over Iraq and the Muslim world.Cal Stokes is getting madder by the day as he watched ISIS and the butchery they have posted all over the internet. He wonders if America is going to do anything to stop that butchery.President Zimmer called Cal and Daniel to the WH.Zimmer does, in fact, have a plan. A plan that involves Special Forces operatives from not only America but Japan, Bulgaria, Austrailia, Italy and Great Britain. He also has retired operators wanting to join the fight. Zimmer advised Cal that he will back Cal and this band of operators to the hilt.It will be up to Cal and the Jefferson Group to bond this group of men into a unit. A unit to make war on ISIS.So begins one great kick ass read. This one has Cal, Daniel, President Zimmer, a girl named Diana, Gaucho and the Jefferson Group, Special operators from other countries, a Bulgarian named Valkov, his twin brother, traitors, death, explosions, sacrifice, a good friend named Andy, a united band of brothers and one kick ass read.Five Stars and then some.

Moral Imperative is the final published novel in The Corps Justice Series and I'm sorry that the next book in the series isn't already available, leaving me at the edge of the cliff for months to find out what's up with Andy! These last two books had me hooked from the beginning - forcing me to finish each story in single setting - real page turners! In this story, Cal and his band of Merry Men - a combined team of elite forces from countries around the world - complete an arduous schedule of training in order to take on ISIS - a few good men against the many! Their raids also include the tracking and elimination of recruits, who had joined ISIS from other countries around the world and are now returning home to visit families. The terrorist group and individuals of ISIS will soon learn that there is no sanctuary. The team faces scrutiny when one of the new members reveals a secret that has the potential to destroy Cal's group of warriors and trust can only go so far! How do they handle this? I'm also thinking that the great success of this book is due to the author writing about real life issues of today. ISIS is real, dangerous and expanding...Mr. Cooper has offered a solution for their elimination!Great job Mr. Cooper - I look forward to your continuing stories!John Podlaski, authorCherries - A Vietnam War Novel

I loved this book, and I loved the subject. This book was action packed as usual, but it also went deeply into all that is I.S.I.S. More people need to know what they are really like, and maybe some of those who seem to have heroic visions of them will finally have their eyes opened. Although you can never really understand the phrase "brothers in arms" unless you have actually been in combat, this book also gives you at least something to use as a basis for that understanding. Our troops really are incredible people, and seeing things from their point of view, especially in combat, makes them even more incredible. When I finished this book I found myself wishing it really was more than just a story, but rather a hopeful glimpse of the future in what could be done if the resolve was there in our leaders, and the leaders of other countries. This was a tremendous book, and I definitely recommend it. Right now I'm in awe of this author, and hope to see many more books from him in the future. In the meantime, I'm glad there are still many I haven't gotten to yet, so I have a lot of good reading ahead of me.

I like C.G. Coopers stories. He has a way of describing his characters, and adding little quirks to individuals in his stories, and you come to feel they are real people. When I read C.G. Coopers books I feel like I know the people who are in the story, know what motivates them, and even feel a level of loss when one is injured or killed. When I read C.G.'s stories I come away feeling that if I were to break down the individual facets that make up story writing, he is a good writer but not top of the field in any one category, with the possible exception of character development. However, when you've finished reading his books you come to realize the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. This is a story that should happen; no, this is story that should be happening right now! If our government had any strength of character, instead of worrying about what the politically correct thing to do would be, this would be history or current events, not a fiction story written by a real patriot. Yes, I like C.G. Cooper's stories... a lot.

About the Author

The authors, Fred and Suzanne (Suzi) Dow, are a husband-wife team researching developed campgrounds located in National Forests throughout the United States. Starting in May 1996, the authors set off from Burke, VA in their 23-foot travel trailer and became full-time RVrs for almost three years. The authors now live in Bisbee, AZ for six months and are on the road the other six months a year visiting National Forests and researching campgrounds. As of September 14, 2006, the authors have visited 146 of the 157 National Forests and personally surveyed 2,229 campgrounds. They expect to complete their research during the year 2008. Suzi Dow, a former Army brat, spent a good bit of her youth traveling across the United States. Those early years of endless miles in the back of the family station-wagon were not enough. During the summer of 1976, she and her two children spent three months tent camping on a meander from coast to coast. This time produced some of her favorite memories. Just before starting work on this Guide, Suzi earned her Master's degree from George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. Now a resident of Bisbee, AZ, she enjoys her position as an Instructor at Cochise Community College, working on the latest edition of the Guides and getting acquainted with a stationary home, at least for six months of the year. Fred Dow was raised in Newton Center, MA and graduated from Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, KY in January 1959. Following college, Fred spent over three years in the Army as a Military Police Officer stationed in Garmisch, Germany. After his discharge, Fred was employed by Aetna Life and Casualty as a claims representative in Richmond, VA and Washington, DC. Later, Fred was employed by two R&D firms as the Director of Administration and Personnel in McLean, VA and Rockville, MD. During the summer of 1972, Fred started work for the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in Washington, DC, first as a program analyst, then finally

Good information on USNF campgrounds. Some of the information is dated, however, because USFS has changed some practices and prices. Still useful when traveling and without access to the internet.

Carole Walters is high up there in my personal pastry pantheon. Especially since she remembers to mention small, but basic steps critical to success. And it gracious enough to avoid mentioning that some of them contradict other author's bad advice. To get to the book itself - it's ideal for people who love to bake but have limited time and/or kitchen space: No special equipment, no multiple preparations, no critical timing, nothing requiring multiple components needing to be combined. My only quibble with this book is that the recipes are, at least in my opinion, overly sweet.

I've baked over 30 recipes out of this book and each one was perfect (aside from a couple of user errors). Walter gives great tips on how to handle ingredients to get the best end product, and I religiously follow each step. If Walter says to blend something for 3 minutes, she's always right. I usually take my baked items in for my colleagues at work. Many of them are from or have lived in Europe, and they rave that they like my baked goods much more than typical American pastries, cakes, etc. because they're not too sweet. Walter has taken great care to balance the ingredients and make the flavors the triumphal centerpiece. The pound cake was a particular hit with my Baltic region colleagues - it reminded them of the cakes they ate as children. My personal favorites are the coffee cakes and italian slices. I've got my next recipe already picked out - Classic Brioche - which I'll make tomorrow if we're snowed in again! I also plan to get Walter's other books on cakes, pies and cookies.

I've only made the cakes in this book so far, and while this a lovely addition to my shelf, the reason I'm not giving this 5 stars is because the baking TIMES are WAY off. If you really do bake your cakes for the hour-and-fifteen minutes called for in most of these recipes, you will end up with a dry and overbaked product. While I'm aware that ovens vary, I've never had this trouble with any similar book. Most often, forty-five minutes does the trick.

Carole Walter has taught for years and it shows in the book. Clear instructions, good results. I was hoping for more interesting recipes but that's my fault for not checking first. It's unfair to blame the author because she didn't write the book i was hoping for. I think that this would be an excellent choice for anyone who is new to baking and wants to try some new techniques. Still, for my baking money Maida Heater is the way to go.

It would be difficult to expound on Laura Stokes-Gray "Cookbook Lover's" comprehensive review. The primary weakness of the book is the dearth of photographs - don't get me wrong, there are photos, but a rather small selection considering the number of recipes. Luckily, one of Walters' greatest strengths is her detailed instructions. The recipe measurements are given in cups and teaspoons, not grams and mL, and they are geared toward home bakers. Each recipe has a difficulty rating, with detailed prep instructions listed in a sidebar.A couple of cons: the book could have used just a few more pictures of some of the more complex or interesting finished desserts. It could also use more careful editing. For example, it seems like the editors just cut and pasted the instructions for Carol's Favorite Streusel into the other streusel recipes, even though they do not make double batches of streusel.I think that some of the most useful chapters in the book are those dealing with strudel and danish pastry. Walter provides lengthy, detailed instructions for these baked goods, plus mouth-watering recipes. A wonderful, wonderful book. I've baked about 12 things out of it, and everything has been very well received.

I haven't found something I didn't like. Well worth the price.

Confession . . . I like cookbooks. But I love this cookbook! Great recipes that are diverse in nature and offer substitute options for the novice baker afraid to use raspberries instead of blueberries for example. Easy to follow directions; even if you are not a baker. My husband and son both give the results a thumbs up and I am not always known for my baking; I like to keep it simple. I am, however, an avid cook and appreciate this cookbook.

Excellent home baking book especially for traditional sweet yeast dough.

We bought three books about puberty for our 11 year old son. I will post this comment under all three books. The books are The Boy’s Body Book, Third Edition: Everything You Need to Know for Growing up YOU by Kelli Dunham, RN; The “What’s Happening to My Body?” Book for Boys. Revised Edition by Lynda Madaras with Area Madaras and It’s Perfectly Normal: Changing Bodies, Growing Up, Sex and Sexual Health (The Family Library) by Robie H. Harris. My son read all three books, so I asked him for his feedback on each book and this is what he said.He found the It’s Perfectly Normal book to be “more comic’y and less squeamish.” He found the Bird and the Bee characters thru-out the book to be “really funny.” It’s Perfectly Normal contained the most information about sexual intercourse whereas The Boy’s Body Book and What’s Happening to My Body have more about health. The What’s Happening to My Body book contained “more anatomically correct drawings.” It also has a section about being uncircumcized and how to take care of your foreskin. The Boy’s Body Book is “fine,” but “it doesn’t really talk about sex and genital changes.” It doesn’t go into as much detail as the other two books. It does however have more content on older teens, curfew, chores, siblings and divorce. It also has a brief section on what to do if someone tries to touch you inappropriately. The Boy’s Body Book also doesn’t have a section about girls’ bodies, but both What’s Happening to My Body and It’s Perfectly Normal do have sections about girls.Overall, if parents want a book that is more about emotions, then he recommends the Boy’s Body Book; and if parents want a book that is more detailed about sex and genital changes, then he recommends What’s Happening to My Body or It’s Perfectly Normal.

I see a lot of reviews from parents. How about a review from a reader? The first edition of this book was published in 1984; I am a man and I was given this book by my parents in 1994 at age 11 (there also exists a "...Book for Girls" version). My review is based on the first edition.Let's get this out of the way -- this book is THOROUGH. It is massively informative. There will be stuff your kid doesn't necessarily understand -- lord knows I had to reread it more than once, and your kid will, too, and that's fine -- understanding is not the primary issue: Access to information is the primary issue.-- Your kid will learn all the basic chemistry and biology behind sex and sexuality -- far more than they will pick up in any public school curriculum.-- They will be given quotes, advice, and/or told of experiences by other ordinary people throughout the pages on topics ranging from the simple facts of puberty to relationships and sex in adolescence, and these words of wisdom will come from people running the gamut from early adolescence to well on the far side of adulthood.-- They will learn the same vulgar speech teenagers and adults have used since the beginning of time (words you yourself know, parent, whether you find them offensive or not in your role as parent) and that they would otherwise and completely unavoidably pick up from their peers anyway, only sans book lacking the foreknowledge to give them a sense of respect for their own bodies, others' bodies, and what any sexual slang and cussing means and how it can be harmful and how it can be helpful.-- Actual sex is discussed to a basic but broad degree. Vaginal sex, oral sex, anal sex, and masturbation (and the mechanics of each) are covered.-- They will learn how the physical changes and the emotional changes they are experiencing will work in tandem to make them feel things they have never experienced before. They will be equipped to identify feelings ranging from changes in anger or sadness they may experience as they move out of childhood, to how they may encounter the brand new feelings of sexual desire and a desire for romantic companionship. Not only will they be able to simply identify the feelings, they will be given insight into figuring out WHY they feel the way they do, and will be given tools to be able to make safe and effective decisions about those feelings and to discuss those feelings when those feelings cause distress.-- They will also learn how to discuss these feelings with boyfriends/girlfriends or other sexual partners, and how to effectively listen to the feelings of those partners. Part of this will include being able to assert oneself when one doesn't feel ready for sex. Part of this will include how to have sex responsibly (no contraceptive method left undiscussed and condoms heavily emphasized for STI protection) in your teenage years if they instead feel ready. They will get information on STIs and how to seek treatment if they suspect a problem; they will also get information on pregnancy and all options for pregnancy, from carrying to term to keep the baby, carrying to term for adoption, and abortion. They will get first-hand accounts and other advice of how to deal with breakups and growing apart for relationships (whether or not they have become sexual), from the point-of-view of breakups both amicable and terrible, and they will get the information they need to be aware of to identify abusive relationships and how they can seek to remove themselves from an abusive situation.-- This book does not hide the fact that homosexuals exist. The language used to describe sexuality and relationship is largely neutral throughout, and where any unique risk factors exist, those are discussed. This book is a calm resource for anyone who may be experiencing any tumult in their life as a result of their sexual orientation. This book and a decent upbringing are probably why I never had any compunctions about nor took any guff for being a bisexual man.I am... not sure I've actually covered everything this book has to offer. This book is actually heavier than the mass of all its atoms because of the amount of information in it.Do not be afraid buying this book because you think your child is too young to understand what's being discussed. I reiterate: Understanding is not the problem. A lack of accurate, complete, and honest information is the problem. If your kid literally doesn't understand something (for instance, why on earth would anyone want to put someone's penis in their mouth for this "oral sex" thing), you know what your kid will do? Almost certainly shrug and forget about it. Then, some time later when they DO understand why someone would want to do that, all that information they just shoved aside is going to click into place and there you have it: A well-adjusted kid. Information has to come before understanding.Just two words of warning for when you buy this book:1) YOU read it first, parent. Read it and know it thoroughly. You could never in a million years cover all this book covers in a series of awkward, abortive "the talk"s, but some kids will have questions and you gotta be a person they can ask and you gotta study up so you can keep it relevant to the learning at hand.2) Maybe advise your child that he or she shouldn't bring this book over to their friends' houses. Some parents are extremely not okay with that sort of thing.

Review

"Jessica Koslow’s cooking is always in tune with the seasons and I admire her approach to food that is pure and beautiful. Everything I Want to Eat is a delightful cookbook that truly lives up to its title!" (Alice Waters)"I love Jessica, I love Sqirl, and I love this book." (Mark Bittman)"Don't let the cuteness of Sqirl fool you. It's smart and insanely delicious. I never understood why white people loved toast so much until I had theirs. But everything is genius and every ingredient has a purpose." (David Chang)"Paraphrasing the philosopher Isaiah Berlin, I once called Jessica Koslow a hedgehog, which is to say a thinker who knew One Big Thing. In her case, the One Big Thing was jam: Koslow was remarkably talented at capturing the nuances of fruit, sweetness and dust in a jar. Could I have been mistaken? Because at the moment, Koslow seems to embody nearly everything wonderful about Los Angeles cuisine." (Jonathan Gold, food critic for the LA Times)“In Everything I Want to Eat, Jessica Koslow opens the door to her world for the reader through the people, the product, the place and her stunning aesthetic on the plate. At Sqirl, while the rest of the world was shunning gluten, Jessica has made toast and jam modern, unctuous and feminine without being precious. Her grain bowls are brilliant and her treatment of the most perfect protein, the egg, reverent. I will cook from this book … and devour Jessica’s familiar yet witty food and words with a smile on my face.  Everything you will want to eat is a self-fulfilling prophecy.” (Anne Quatrano, chef and author of Summerland)“In 2004 I lived on my friend's couch on Hoover just around the corner from where Sqirl would eventually exist. I had no interest in breakfast then, still don't. However, in the off chance I get to visit Los Angeles these days, I always go to Sqirl. And always eat breakfast. This book is a monster. And if I ever get the opportunity to write another cookbook, I will steal shamelessly from this one. Watch me.” (Brooks Headley, chef and author of Fancy Desserts)"People ask me (like a lot) who the chef I admire most is, and my answer is always lightning quick: Jessica Koslow. Jess cooks food that I yearn to eat every day, resplendent with unbridled freshness, focused authenticity, and mad skills. She is also the most badass person I know in our restaurant industry. And now you can cook like Sqirl." (Hugh Acheson, chef and author of A New Turn in the South)"It's hard to describe Sqirl to people who've never been there. It's hard to justify why I fell so hard for a tiny East Hollywood coffee shop serving fancy toast and sorrel pesto rice bowls to passels of hipsters. But Everything I Want to Eat encapsulates the feel of and flavors and spirit of Sqirl so beautifully. I've often thought of Jessica's food that it's exactly what I'd like to be cooking for my family if I had the tools to do so, and now I do. The creativity, the ingredients, the people, the delicious exuberance that makes Sqirl so special—and makes L.A. one of the the world's most exciting places to eat—it's all here. And you don't even have to stand in line for an hour to get it." (Besha Rodell, restaurant critic and author)"Jessica once joked to me that Sqirl is a place where beautiful people come to eat on uncomfortable chairs. And this book is full of them, the beautiful people, eating her beautiful food, shot by fantastic photographers: Nacho Alegre's stacked-food shots in the latter third joyously evoke Irving Penn. But the proof of a cookbook is not in how much we want to climb inside the pages and live in them, the proof is in the pudding: here there are two, coconut and cocoa, as well as the recipes for all the jams & eggs & toasts & things that made all those beautiful people want to line up on an ugly corner in almost-Silver Lake for an uncomfortable seat at Ms. Koslow's cantina. Now you've got the power to conjure that kind of draw at home. Use it wisely!" (Peter Meehan, editor of Lucky Peach)“I would say that Koslow and I are culinary soul mates, but given the popularity of the place, it’s clear that I’m not the only one. This is food whose time has come.” (Mark Bittman)

I LOVE this cookbook. I have loved every recipe from this book so far. It was especially helpful weaning myself off caffeine to make her chicory dandelion root coffee alternative. I hope to visit Sqirl someday if I'm ever in LA. Can't wait for jessica's next cookbook on jam recipes :)

Y'all, I really wanted to love this book. I've never had the pleasure of visiting Sqirl (I'm a East Coaster), but I've read a lot about the restaurant and the owner over the years so I was definitely interested in picking up the cookbook. Some recipes are a lot more appealing than others but not too many really stood out to me as something I'd wanna make at home. But what stuck out to me the most is that while a lot of the recipes were seemingly simple they were actually ingredient heavy and fairly complicated. A lot of the recipes called for ingredients that aren't exactly common in most grocery stores or won't just be in your pantry already. There's even quite a few recipes that require ANOTHER recipe to be made. Then a lot ask for kitchen tools that not every home cook/baker would necessary have at their disposal, unless their running their own Sqirl-esque operation out of their home. What makes it a bit annoying is the book is written just assuming you have access to all these things. Sure, you could substitute but I feel like a lot of the recipes are made where even if you substitute one ingredient you're making a significant change in the overall result. It's still a beautiful book and a interesting exploration of cooking, but I don't feel like it was exactly intended for the average at-home cook, but rather something to sit on the coffee tables of the celebrity/famous patrons who probably make a cameo in the book.

I love Jessica's food. I have eaten in Sqirl and it is amazing food. Unfortunately, some of the recipes are hard to make if you don't have the right equipment (i.e. juicer to make the Turmeric drinks).

Simply the best. We cook from it several times a week and the recipes help us make beautiful food at home - perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned. Make the frittata! And the turneric tonic! It's beautiful too and the perfect holiday gift.

love this cool book! super straight forward and has a lot of good recipes

If you've been to Sqirl, you know how good it is. I love being able to make the recipes at home since I live in NY and don't get to eat at Sqirl whenever I want. Highly recommend!

Best cookbook ever!

So creative, the images are amazing as are the recipes!! A true work of art.
