Although the author seems pompous and full of himself, I still enjoyed the story... I liked that we got to see behind the scenes of what really goes on in the fragrance world. In fact, I now feel sorry for the Fragrance and Flavor houses who must fend for their feast. The days of perfumers working on an artistic level, crafting the next masterpiece, is GONE. Insert briefs that demand trend fragrances that appeal to the mass market and, oh by the way, only $10 per Kilo for fragrance ingredients! WHAT? That's INSANE and UNHEARD of! No wonder every fragrance on the market smells the same... everyone has to use the SAME cheap ingredients to meet the demand... and the fragrance house must fit the bill in hopes to win the contract... they take all the risk. Which makes it even WORSE! I feel sooooooooooo sorry for the perfumers working in the Fragrance Houses of today. Before you know it, they, too, will be obsolete and replaced by machines that can do a million trials in a day. It's ridiculous. What happened to the art aspect of it? The masterpiece design? Argggggggggh... it's sickening!I've read this book TWICE in three days... I honestly keep telling myself this guy HAS to be joking... The amount of money spent on the marketing BLOWS me away! It's friggin INSANE! Makes me NEVER want to purchase another Commercialized HYPED UP brand of perfume again!I'm now on the prowl for some awesome Artisan Fragrances... from perfumers who are not chained to a desk... whose creativity is not stifled by briefs and bottom line figures. Give me quality! And let my dollars go toward the JUICE... NOT the advertising!

This is a fascinating book, and I think that Burr covered a significant amount of information about the contemporary perfume industry that I don't thing any other author has covered. That being said, with uncharted territory comes an underdeveloped field where well-researched books tend to suffer for lack of an edited voice. There are sections of this book where Burr's use of language becomes so casual that it detracts from readability. However, I highly recommend this book. Burr's insights into the perfume industry are unparalleled.

A well-written, intriguing look at the business of perfumery, through the lens of the development of two different (very different) scents for market. Perfume is hard to write about -- we all have such incredibly visceral responses to the scent of smell, written deep in our brain's perception of the world around us and part of the primal depths of our consciousness -- and Burr does an excellent job at invoking those responses through the medium of text. His gift with words turns what could have been an otherwise forgettable book into a gripping exploration of both the history of the perfume industry and the complex and often-maddening process of scent development today.

'The Emperor of Scent' is my all-time favorite read, and Chandler delivers again with a more in depth look--not into the science of smell--but the art and business of perfume. Chandler's style may irk some, but I love the way his stories unfold. I appreciate the journalistic touches and I am amazed at the number of--and details in--quoted conversation (esp. considering many conversations were originally in French--not Chandler's native language).Luca Turin, the genius biology scientist from Chandler's first book is nowhere in this one...except...I find that Chandler's adopted Luca's metaphoric descriptions of perfume (Luca is GENIUS in this). However, his descriptions lack the startling and fascinatingly accurate descriptions that Luca concocts with sardonic humor and adroit language.The long narratives on the science of mixing molecules, the story behind natural and synthetic ingredients and the expensive bait and switch marketing in the perfume industry bogged the story down in the middle for me. Rather I enjoyed the interplay between the people, their thoughts and processes to bring all the magic together to a successful perfume.I'm not a Sex and the City fan, nor do I care about what Sarah Jessica Parker is doing, but I loved the chapters in NY and Chandler's fly on the wall (and one-on-one) interactions with Sarah Jessica through this long and meeting-filled process. Chandler gets us into the life and mind of Hermes' in-house perfumer, Jean-Claude in a way that felt genuine and real.Chandler is a master in weaving the two story lines together, and creating tension at the end of chapters as the stories alternated, leaving me eager to move ahead in the book to see what happens.I thoroughly enjoyed this book as much as I'd hoped, and look forward to more from Chandler Burr!

In 1957, my mother took a class Chinese cooking whlie my Dad was stationed in Tokyo Japan, on a tour that allowed the family to join him. Mom wore her text book for the class to tatters, over the next 30 years. What a delight to find a pristine copy of the book in the used book market as a surprise Christmas gift. What an even greater delight to find the book back in print, so that I can gift each of my sisters and brother with one this Christmas. The recipes are adapted to products and vegetables available in this country. The sweet and sour pork recipe also includes the best recipe I've ever found, for making the wonderful sauce from scratch. And if you've ever wondered how to make egg roll wrappers from scratch - you'll find it in this book.

I have not made ANYTHING from this book that hasn't been immediately OVEReaten. The food is just too good to stop, so be warned. I found this book after searching for good Chinese cookbooks for Western homes, so foods that aren't too off the beaten path, but still Chinese. The pineapple meatballs are beyond delicious!

What a delight to find this cookbook in print. My mother-in-law has a tattered copy she uses to make delicious meals out of to this day. She and her family were stationed in Tokyo in the early 1960's. So happy to find copies to share with family.

I have used this cook book for years (over 30) and rely on it for all Chinese oriented dishes. Fried rice is great. Simple to use and even I am a successful cook with its help. Bought another copy for my son who likes to cook.

I owned this book years ago and decided to give it to someone who was going to be located in Asia......simple recipes not needing a bunch of ingredients......I still have mine by the way.......I hope the recipient enjoys it as much as I still do......the party who shipped it was outstandingly gracious and informative.....good job AGAIN......you are a company that can really be counted on to deliver.....keep up the great work......I have never been disappointed.....thank you

While living in Guantanamo, Cuba Naval Base, over forty years ago, I typed recipes from a friend's copy of this book by nuns in China. On a whim I checked Amazon for a copy. I have never been this excited in finding a book I was looking for as I thought there was no chance that I would find it. The copy is clean, as stated, and the price was more than fair.

This cookbook is a backup for the tattered one I own. I have been looking for a replacement for years and was overjoyed to find it online. The lemon dessert is especially good.

Rich Steve guides are the very best for Europe. They have true reviews, telling you if something that is supposed to be great is actually boring, and directing you to the really terrific stuff that is not well known. His museum guides are unequalled. He walks you through each important piece with details and tells you when to skip a room. I looked at some places he said to skip and he was right. You will not find a better guide.

I purchased this book along with Rick Steves Ireland book- thinking that (since we plan to spend a good chunk of time in Dublin) it would be more in detail than his country-wide book. It is not. It is just a reprint of the excerpt of his Ireland book.Considering that it's not really more portable, or more in detail, or much cheaper, I can't figure out what the value is in an identical book. I'm sure many others repeated this mistake so I thought I would mention it here.Overall the book (like his many others) covers walking tours, tourist sites, good eating and accommodations. We appreciate the overview and the star ratings so that we can plan our time well.

This guide book was extremely helpful as I traveled around Dublin on a brief visit. What to see and where to find what seemed most important and interesting is clearly explained. Maps were very clear, too, and, as always, Rick Steves, shows the reader how to save money and still have a wonderful visit. I found the section on the National Library especially worthwhile, as a great William Butler Yeats exhibit has been installed since my last Ireland trip 20 years ago.

You don't need this book AND the Rick Steves book on Ireland: They contain the same information. That said, Rick Steves gives the best tips to enjoy a fabulous, affordable vacation in Ireland.

I've also used his Netherlands, Germany, and France guide. I've learned that whenever Rick says it's boring or not worth your time, he's right. You also don't end up with your nose in the guidebook because he is so concise and the way he lays the areas on your journey out helps you to also feel like you discovered a lot of things on your own. (Later to discover that if you had your nose in the book, he covers those things too!) I'm really glad I got to do some amazing things over my short stay in Dublin and I can't wait to do more exploring the next time I go later this month! ALWAYS Rick Steve's!

This book is a complete copy of a chapter in Rick Steve's big tour guide of Ireland. Don't buy both like I did.

I purchased this book in early 2015 for my trip to Dublin in February and it was my go to guide throughout my stay. This book, accompanied by a simple laminated map of Dublin and the city becomes your oyster. Rick does an outstanding job of highlighting all the must see attractions and isn't shy to tell you when they're tourist traps. He also focuses on the hidden gems and lesser known sites around the city ensuring this book is the ultimate snapshot of Dublin

I will only be in Dublin for a few days which is why I wanted the "snapshot" Dubin version of Rick Steves' Ireland, as I knew I would not have time to explore more than Dublin. I booked my hotel after readying about the different areas/neighborhoods of Dublin, and since it turns out to be a busy weekend, I was able to find a place even though my first few choices were not available. After reading the book, I have created my itinerary for my short visit and feel well prepared to have a great trip.
